Great article Rick. I sure miss the good ole days of great sports journalism.

four time all-SEC is ridiculous. May not ever be done again.

Won't be done again. Anybody that good will play three years, take the money and run.

I didn't know that freshmen played back then. When was that rule put in place and when was it removed?

Shorty McWilliams was my Grandfather's favorite player at MSU. He used to talk about him all the time.

Didn't he own a restaurant in Meridian at one point?

The "no freshmen" rule was in place until the 1970s, BUT there was an exception during WWII because there weren't many athletes in college at the time and teams needed all the bodies they could get.

He did run a restaurant in Meridian, Weideman's. My daddy would take me to Meridian just to eat lunch there and visit with Shorty Mac. Ace, my daddy, said Shorty Mac was the best football player he ever saw and that was saying something because he loved him some Bubba Phillips. Shorty Mac was a great story teller, a warm, friendly person and a Mississippi treasure.

Story is he ran a kickoff back for a touchdown, but a flag was thrown causing the touchdown to be taken back. He took the second kickoff and ran it back again for a touchdown. Would love to know if that is factual.
