For me, I would say Edward Prather or Dicenzo Miller. They were both sophomores at the time I believe, which made it more impressive to me.

Actually beat Grienke @ Apopka in our second matchup against them. They brought him out of center in middle relief and he just didn't have "it" that day. Walked a guy then gave up an RBI double to a teammate of mine that's still in MLB. Grienke was a more impressive hitter in the 2 games we played against him. We threw what eventually became an elite SEC pitcher in game 1 and they destroyed him. Came back with prettymuch a right handed Ross Mitchell and won a shutout 1-0 to take the tourney. Funny how more talented high school teams(and college teams for that matter) most often struggle to deal with the change of pace. The way it actually went down, I was surprised when I saw his draft projection and how high he actually went a little over a year later. He was a big deal and there were a bunch of scouts there -- but we sure didn't know how big of deal yet or we probably would have grabbed a few autographs...

Fielder was the best pure hitter I've ever seen live in person. He shut down our pregame to watch him take BP with a wood bat. Actually used wood on the summer travelling circuit in a metal bat league the first year of the -3s. His swing was literally scary to people on the right side of the field. He was a pretty intimidating guy overall. Just so much bigger and stronger than everybody else.

Marcus West at Columbus. He went on to be a stud at Memphis.. All Cusa in 04 and 05.. I had no answer.. He was tall and long and I just couldn't block him when he didn't want me to.. He was so long I couldn't cut him.. I took a cheap shot out of frustration.. Didn't even get him off his feet.. Just got a flag.. There were other really good players at Panola and Starkville (Tee Millons) among others but as far as who lined up across from me all night West was good

We also played Memphis East that year who won the Tennessee state title... They had a line backer that was a stud.. I mean really good.. Don't remember his name.. Anyways he was on the First 48 a few years ago as a murder victim.. He was a real live gangster killer.. So I give him most dangerous human I played against award

Definitely top notch. Engie, you would have really enjoyed playing ball in our region in Cobb County, GA. My SR. year in HS I faced 12 pitchers in region games that either got drafted or pitched D1. 20+ years later it is still the SECW of HS baseball in GA. Made me feel not so bad about my .250 BA and .500 OBP.

Yeah, Cobb County select ball was ridiculous. We played a ton of games against teams from there growing up. The amount of talent subdivided between 10-20 "select" teams was just stupid. If you could keep and combine those guys onto one college team, it would be a dynasty like baseball has never seen. Not since the USC days long before my time anyway. We had basically all of the central MS area talent(which pales in comparison to UGA obviously) but we had the advantage of many of us playing together from the time we were 6 through highschool...

Actually beat the East Cobb Astros in a spring break Slidell "World Series" I think in 1998. Ended up getting bounced by them that summer at the actual AAU World Series at Disney in the Braves Spring Training facility, then watched them go on to win the national title. I may be misremembering, but it seems like we may have been their only loss through that whole summer. I know we were something like 67-6 and didn't lose a game inside the state borders of MS, but that team was clearly superior to us across the board in spite of the previous loss...

Baseball

Tim Dillard from Saltillo. 6'4 sidearm pitcher. Topped out at 97mph. I batted right handed, so that tailing fastball was pretty intimidating.
Michael Spurlock is a name that comes to mind in little league baseball. Probably mature earlier than we did, but damn he threw hard and was a hell of SS.
Jeffrey Rea. Couldn't get the kid out to save my life. Was a couple of years younger than I.

Football

Ken Topps from Shannon when I was in HS. We were both QBs and I thought he was impressive. Threw it all over the field. Could run too.

That program just about invented travel ball. It grew out of the kids (and their younger brothers) that won the Little League World Series in '83. When I was in HS, they were best but still local talent mostly. Now they bring in players from all over the SE to play on their teams. You had to bring your A game - and when you beat them you felt like you just beat the Yankees.

Which is why I still can't figure out why UGA has never tapped into EC as a pipeline. They should just offer scholarships to anyone who plays for them and hope for the best.

Summer '90, I was on the "B" All-Star team for my park in a 4 team state tourney (set up like Super Regional is now) to go to Texas. Took out our A team, and East Cobb's A team, and went to the final out in game 2 against East Cobb's B before they hit a walk off. I was crushed - but it was all my Dad could do to hide how happy he was that he wasn't going need to pay for a trip to Texas.

Kevin Prentiss

He was a year older than me when I made the WC baseball team. I showed up for the first varsity game (freshmen didn't dress) to watch, and there was a guy on our team leading off and playing SS who hadn't been to a single practice. I had never seen him before in my life, and it was like the twilight zone.

Turns out, it was Prentiss, who had been playing basketball during spring practice. He was pretty impressive in every sport and a good guy to boot.

From what I remember, their entire starting line up in 96-98 was either drafted or played D-1 ball. It was automatic

You from Houston? I know Atterberry was at Kosy. I really hate MSU didn't get him. That was some serious shady recruiting. Kid ended up going to OM. He really didn't want to be there from what I gathered and never really got much traction once on campus there. Not a bad kid. And yes, one heckuva football player!! Played against Jerald Baylis (later USM all-American and all-time CFL great) when he was at Callaway and I was at Meridian High. They lined him up all over the place, and every time I tried to block him I whiffed. Distant second was Ricky George (played at MSU) of Gulfport. Had him lined up for a perfect trap block, and he just stuffed me with his forearm.

Several friends formed a basketball team that played in a league at that building across from the NEJSO; I forget the name but it was where people played indoor soccer. My friends were all private school guys that didn't play on the varsity team for their respective school. Once of the teams they played in that league was named the Baby Bulls. The starting five was David Sanders, Justin Reed, Aaron Harper, Marcus Terrell (I believe he played at USM; he was an absolute freak), and Michael Kriss (token tall private school kid).
