Kentucky went 3-5-2
Vandy went 1-9
State was 3-6
Tulane went 0-10
Houston was 7-4 with a loss to 3-6 State
Tennessee was 4-6
Tennessee-Chattanooga was 5-5 against a 1-AA schedule
LSU was actually good at 9-1-1

Impressive I must say...no Auburn, Alabama, Georgia, Fla etc

Johnny Vaught was the inspiration behind my manageable schedule theory. The fact of the matter is, it's not that difficult to get up for one game. That's essentially what Ole Miss had to do that season.

This was Ole Miss' manta in those times. Schedule a bunch of cupcakes and avoid most of the big boys of the SEC. But the main kicker to all of this....and I preclude my point by saying this...think back over the past 10 years and the debate that has taken place in the BCS era of who the two best teams in America are on a yearly basis to try and give us a true National Champion.

Keep in mind that in no time in history have we had the amount of live coverage of the games being played. At no time have we had the daily coverage from numerous networks giving us every bit of information possible on every single team in America. At no time in history have we known more about everything there is to know about....and we still at the end of the year debate and argue who the best team is.

Now think back to 1962. Instead of ESPN Sports Center, you had a ticker tape that ran through radio and TV stations with information where someone typed a score and second hand recap of what transpired during a game. (1962 was the first year in history that a college football game was televised from east coast to west coast; Rose Bowl). Instead of Kirk Hirbstreit giving first hand analysis of the game of the week, you had Dick Dunkel, Sr., a market researcher from New York telling America who the best team in the country was. Of course, if you didn't think Dick was knowledgable in what he was talking about during that era, you could toss you allegiance to the Helm's Athletic Foundation and founder, Paul Helms of Los Angesles, sportsman and philanthropist. Of course, if all else failed and you needed someone to rank you #1 back in those days, you could always turn to Edward Litkenhous, a chemical engineer from Vanderbilt and his brother "Frank" who put out the Litkenhous Rankings.

Rankings in those days would be no different in todays world as if Coach34 put out his weekly rankings and declared himself an expert.

Not saying Coach34 is not an expert or anything....you get my drift.

Regarding the schedule posted above. There were 12 teams in the SEC that year. Ole Miss played the teams that ended up being 3rd, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th in the conference. Combined records for the 6 SEC teams was 20-37. Take out LSU and they were a combined 11-36. Remember that next time you see a 1962 banner.
