Ha! That's awesome. Their so-called "football history" is about as fabricated as Muschamp's wife's "good looks".

And even though it didn't show it, they've never finished #1 in the coaches poll either.

They really placed an unknown quote on that. Hahahahaha. Couldn't find a credited quote that summed up some bs they were pushing.

The UPI was the Coaches Poll back then- it shows it in the pic together with the AP

Ah ok, I wasn't aware of that.

Bottom line: in the age of "claimed NC's", you can only go off of the AP/CP; if you're not ranked in one of those, you've got absolutely no business claiming a NC.

The crazy thing is that I know who said that quote: Calvin Coolidge. That poster is literally a comedy of errors.

Some man called in to Head to Head (yesterday or day before) and said he knew Ole Miss had a national championship because he saw the trophy. And he was serious.

They have been #1 in the AP a few weeks during midseason but not at the end when it counts.

I doubt ESPN puts this out if we're not in contention with the bears.

I sent that to my only mississippi friend, he responded that "I never said we were first those polls."
I said, "hmm! Which was it then?"
"Likenhouse, they had more polls back then"
I said, "oh ok"

I've told you guys before that I'm married into an Oklahoma family - so I follow them, too. When discussing their NC's, OU fans claim 7. They are all AP NCs. The last one was a BCS championship, in which the AP also had them No 1, in 2000. They also have had six Coaches Poll championships - all the same years - excluding the 1974 AP year.

I say that to say, I'm sure research would tell OU fans that they were #1 at the end of other seasons in various other polls (given that there were so many various polls then), but if so, they sure as hell don't claim them. Only the AP/CP NCs, count.

Bama has 9 AP NCs - the most. That includes the 3 recent BCS NCs.

just help him out and tell him 1960 was the only year they were given a NC by ANY POLL.. the other two are retro-active or mathematical crap.

To be fair, ESPN should do the same thing when Bama claims 14 I believe. However, 9 legit is still off the charts impressive.

When OU played Bama in the Sugar Bowl, the broadcast put the correct championships up on the graphic for both Bama at 9, OU at 7.

Does OM have a national title trophy to show off in their athletic building? I'm pretty sure that would be the deal breaker. And don't make the argument that a lot of teams don't have national title trophies but still won.... because no they didn't. The bowl system has been flawed for so many years. The Big 10 and Pac 12 considered the Rose Bowl to be the national championship all the way up till the BCS was created. So I'm sorry, the only credibility to winning a national title is having a trophy that states it.

1941 belongs to Minnesota, but if Bama continues to claim it then we should claim it but only the week we play them. You know, for the publicity.

Chip
10-17-2014, 10:03 PM
Yes, 9 AP NCs for Bama.

The Total is the total of APs and CPs. Many of them overlap. As I said, Oklahoma fans don't claim 13, they claim 7.

Chip
10-17-2014, 10:06 PM
The important thing is that it's the AP and CP NCs that count - especially prior to the BCS era.

And the other important thing is that amongst those with 3, there is no Ole Miss.

Does Tennessee not have any?

Chip
10-17-2014, 10:19 PM
If Tennessee has any AP or Coaches Poll titles, it is less than the number LSU has and this was the end of the list that I'd found.

Chip
10-17-2014, 10:23 PM
I would definitely think they'd have one the year they won the initial BCS, when they beat us in the SEC CG. I'll look to see if they have any more.

Chip

Two AP NCs for Tennessee. 1951 and 1998.

Has anyone looked into the strength of schedule of those '59-'62 OM teams? I seem to recall they played some horrible teams.
