Yup. That's the reason. All of the fanbases over there have some sort of nickname.

Us = Grinders
Bama = Gumps
Mizzou= Yankees
Arky = Flagshippers

And so on.

This. It is from the 2009 Kentucky game when Dixon ran for 252. In the post game interview he said he was just out there grindin for his state. Then the douchenozzle professor, Whit Waide, that a ton of people thought was the greatest thing ever wrote his essay on grindin. Don't really care how much that guy loves state, his shtick is just awfully annoying.

Anyway, that's how grindin/grinders was born.
