It always bothered me that immediately after that fumble the nearest ref ran over and pointed to the 2 yard line, but then all of a sudden, no, it went out of the end zone. Not saying there was foul play, but it just made it that much more painful.

I used to think that, but there needs to be a punishment for extending the ball like that near the goal line. If you just mark it where the guy lost the fumble, every player will extend the ball every time.

They could make fumbling out the endzone a personal foul at the spot of the fumble. Definitely would give the extra punishment if you want that, but not completely strip possession away.
