At the beginning of the year we all knew that a new coach would be coming in the Les going out. I think most were optimistic that with Dan doing the play calling, that we would pick up a dedicated special teams coach. Instead we got Brian Johnson, and the result was a mixed reaction of "wow, big time hire" to "who the hell? can he coach kickers?"

Well, let's reintroduce ourselves to who Brian Johnson is. This is pretty much all you need to know:

This is the winningest QB in Utah history who led the 2008 Utes to an undefeated season and a win over 4th ranked Alabama in the Sugar bowl. That was an Alabama team that beat everybody in the regular season slate and lost to Florida (Dan Mullen's Florida) in the SEC Championship game.

This is a guy who went from QB coach to offensive coordinator at Utah in two years and at 25 years old. He's a pretty special guy.

Why is he important to us:
1. The QB is by far the most important position on the field in most offenses, but especially in Dan Mullen's. This is the guy that makes everything tick from decision making pre and post snap, to making the throws, to keeping and running. Our most important position should have the best coaching.
2. Most HS QB coaching is awful, so these guys have a long way to go in a short amount of time. You simply cannot expect either these guys to come in with fundamentals or that the head coach is going to be the guy to get them there.
3. MSU is historically terrible at recruiting QB's. A high profile, energetic, young coach like Johnson can do that for us.
4. We have the most talented QB to ever step foot on the field at MSU ready to go. I'm glad we have a guy who has accomplished what we would love for Dak to accomplish right beside him.

TL;DR Brian Johnson is a baddass and we should appreciate the move Dan made here more than we have so far.
