Yea freak accident covering 1st base during a play the ball doesn't even get thrown to him. Seems like at least once a year a pitcher sustains a serious injury covering 1st.

Plays at first where a pitcher has to cover are pretty dangerous. Rarely do players slide into first and it's real easy to get stepped on or have your arm ripped out of socket (exaggeration) by a runner on a tag. Plus the runners are going full speed.

I was at the Cardinals/Royals game a few years ago when Pujols broke his wrist on a play at first.
