It appears that Kennedy and UM is making a run at 5-star, top 20 PF Skal Labissiere out of ECS, and they have a legitimate shot. How does UM get in with a top 20 player with offers from Memphis, KY, UNC, and the like? Easy, offer his handler a job as a coach with a $240K+ / year salary.

Skal made it into the country through Gerry Hamilton's Reach Your Dream Foundation (http://www.rydnow.org/), which basically goes around the world finding kids with potential on the court and importing them into the US. He finally got his hands on a top 20 kid and is ready to cash in. UM has an open spot on the staff and is apparently in negotiations to bring him in to guarantee the kids comes to UM.

Josh Pastner at Memphis has just done the same thing, except Josh has hired a guy whose son's are the kids that Memphis wants. While there has been some criticism of the ethics of the deal, it's hard to blame him if it works, and it's not an NCAA violation to do so.

Now, the deal is not a done deal at UM. There is plenty of opportunity for other schools to beat the UM offer, either above board or otherwise, including our favorite new basketball coach at Auburn.

This, gentlemen, is how basketball recruiting works today.

There was a small article on the CL from last night that said he narrowed his list and Mississippi wasn't one of his choices. Kentucky and Tennessee were the only SEC schools still in consideration.

Just read that. I wrote this last night and just posted it. More interesting stuff from Gary Parrish involving Newman:

… If Malik Newman’s father (Horatio Webster) wants a job on the Ole Miss staff, rest assured, he can have it.

By the way, Skal Labissiere removing Ole Miss from contention doesn’t mean Andy Kennedy won’t still try to do a package deal. ...

(The NCAA hates package deals. But trust me when I tell you the NCAA is going to be curious why Ole Miss’ package deal died this early.)

To be fair to Pastner, the guy he hired does have some coaching experience, and he is a pipeline to his three sons (all blue chip prospects) and some other kids. This is a lot different than hiring a "handler".

Agree completely. Also, I wonder if that distinction caused some hesitation from the UM compliance dept, and hence UM not in his top 6 now.

Yep. Gerald Hamilton's background is IT. Skal is probably going to Memphis so Hamilton can still control him.

There is no amount of money you could pay me to be a D1 basketball HC today. Its the sleaziest, slimiest business out there when it comes to recruiting. Even another level above football and the AAU and summer league circuits have just greatly escalated the problems. Basketball has slipped to become my 3rd favorite college sport by a wide margin because of the the way players are attained AND because of the lack of basketball fundamentals that college players seem to have these days. It amazes me how few players in college can hit a decent percentage of free throws or who seem to know anything about blocking out for a rebound.

Malik isn't going to Ole Miss. Parrish lost some credibility with me for even mentioning Malik connected to Ole Miss. Why would Horatio want a job at Ole Miss anyway? Stupid to even mention that.

I like most of what Parrish does from a Memphis and national perspective, but he's a HUGE UM homer. His wife went there and he just eats it up. His slob-job interview with Freeze the other day almost made me sick, and every time he mentions Mullen he has to throw in how "there is a limit to what you can achieve at MSU." Really irritating.

Agree. Look at what this Hamilton guy is doing. He is literally importing players that he can manage. He's not importing kids that need help, he's bringing in kids that can help him.

The coach memphis hired has 4 sons going from Sr in hs jr in hs fr in hs and a 7th grader I believe and the 2 youngest are supposed to be the best of the 4. He also has won multiple TN state championships including the last TN hs team to go undefeated before any of his sons were on his team. The guy can coach. His wife is the head coach of a small university in Memphis for their women's team. That is just a very bball savy family. Pastner made a NO BRAINER by making that hire. If he didn't do it someone else would of done it. Great
