View Full Version : Ray Rice Suspended

Okay. Ravens RB Ray Rice has been suspended 2 games by the NFL after being charged with third-degree assault after video of him surfaced of him hitting, then dragging his fiance out of an elevator at an Atlantic City casino.

Two games? Only two games? Josh Gordon got suspended THE SEASON for drug use. Surely Harbaugh will lay down the hammer since he is a strict disciplinarian right?

?It?s not a big deal, it?s just part of the process,? Harbaugh said, via ESPN. ?There are consequences when you make a mistake like that. I stand behind Ray. He?s a heck of a guy. He?s done everything right since. He makes a mistake, alright? He?s going to have to pay a consequence. I think that?s good for kids to understand it works that way. That?s how it works, that?s how it should be.?

Well....so much for that.

Dude. Have you seen Josh Gordon's rap sheet? I believe this is Rice's first time to be in trouble with the law (at least while in the NFL and that became public).

Hadn't seen the video, but if he is hitting his fiance then your automatically out of the "good guy" status as far as I'm concerned.

We are guilty of giving athletes to much of a pass on crimes and domestic violence, I am guilty of it as well.

He should be kicked out of the damn league. There really ought to be a zero tolerance policy for this.

I won't be happy with less than a one year suspension.

He married that woman since then though. That may be where the lighter punishment is coming from. Not saying that makes it right, but it could be playing a factor

Both the NFL and the Ravens are NOT getting good pub from this. They're trying to spin it but this isn't helping anything for them.

He knocked her unconscious. 2 games. That's a bad message.

I think the suspension should be heavier. Its sends a very bad message when the NFL allows its players to be seen in Atlantic City. I mean, really... What self respecting person goes to AC?***

Battered women do illogical things.

Guys get suspended for more games for dirty hits in a game against men who are of similar size, covered in pads, and know the risks. It is severe bullshit and this will no doubt be a massive PR knock against the NFL.

The in-elevator video has not been released yet (don't know if it will). I am not going to judge one way or the other having not seen all the evidence. This is likely headed to full expungement from his record. Makes me believe there is something from the in-elevator video we haven't seen. The DA has no reason to go light.

The "optics" aren't good from the leagues standpoint to be sure, but justice is blind. Looking to be kicked out of the league without all the evidence and reasoning with how the law has handled it is absurd.

So what would need to have happened in the elevator to "justify" what happened outside of it?

What would cause the DA to procure a deal that would lead to expungement?

Acting Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain said in a statement that his office approved Rice's PTI request "after careful consideration of the information contained in Mr. Rice’s application in light of all of the facts gathered during the investigation."

"After considering all relevant information in light of applicable law it was determined that this was the appropriate disposition," McClain said.

Added Diamondstein: "I think both the the court and the prosecutor's office made the proper (decision) in the case when all factors were taken into account."

To blindly ignore this because of what you WANT to believe is silly

Interesting.

Richie Incognito gets black balled in the league for trying to toughen up a teammate. Ray Rice gets a 2 game suspension for beating up his girlfriend. Anyone see an issue here?

no, what is silly is to ignore the facts and allow those in authority spin the results and allow said spinning to warp the minds of individuals. there are crimes that I can morally tolerate. but when you clinch your fist and strike a woman in the face and / or head and render her unconcious is totally unacceptable and there are no presidents or supreme court justices that can put fancy words on paper that will change my mind on that. I refuse to be assimilated.

Beating a woman is pretty much par for the course for those guys. I doubt it raised much of an eyebrow in the NFL.

I'm a Saints fan so I thought the bounty penalties were pretty excessive but when you compare them to two games for brutalizing a woman the bounty penalties are almost obscene.

All it takes is for the woman to tell the DA that she does not want to press charges. She will tell him that she loves Ray and that this has never happened before. His lawyer and the DA will have a closed door agreement. ($$) That's how these things work. She is probably afraid of him. He'll ^&%$ her up later if she presses things. Besides, she wants to enjoy the paychecks so who can't stand a little beat down every now and then to live like a millionaire?

While I agree with you completely, how do you know this is actually what happened without seeing the in-elevator video? I tend to believe that most DA's would LOVE to have a high profile domestic battery case to prosecute. I'm sure he was looking for any way possible to hang a conviction on a guy like Ray Rice. That's how these guys make their careers. If he reviewed all of the evidence and decided there wasn't a case to pursue, I'm going to have to take his word for it.

All that lobby camera shows is him carrying an unconscious woman off an elevator. Was she drunk or stoned; did she fall and hit her head on the floor/wall; or did he beat the shit out of her? You can't distinguish any of that without the in-elevator video. Now, if they release that and it shows him hitting her and knocking her out, then he needs to be gone.

Pretty sure it doesn't work that way… at all.
