An article to pass the time.

According to this arcticle MSU has never finished the season with a higher ranking than it started with on the AP poll. And of the 6 times it has entered with a preseason AP ranking 5 of those have finished the season unranked. Looks like we are on the right path to exceed expectations! In 1999 we were unraked and finish #13. Just more useless data for your entertainment.

Well that's a narrow window. I suppose he's trying to figure out how accurate the preseason AP polls are.

For historical purposes I went back to the 1970's to see how our AP poll fortunes went. I looked at years where we ended up ranked in the final poll, and got the preseason rankings for us those years. What it tells you is that
1) we haven't been a very consistent program (duh)
2) National AP pollsters don't really know what they're doing with their preseason picks (also duh)

1974 (PS NR, Final #17)
1976 (PS NR, Final #20)
1980 (PS NR, Final #19)
1992 (PS #22, Final #23)
1994 (PS NR, Final #24)
1999 (PS NR, Final #13)
2000 (PS, Final #24)
2010 (PS NR, Final #15)

I think they usually get the top 10 pretty close. Outside of that it seems to be a crap shoot.

I want this to be like 2010: Nobody sees us coming until it's too late. But, this season we bring a lot more shock and awe.

I prefer to be unranked. We also play no one remarkable before LSU. Miles has no respect for or fear of the school from Starksville. So, I prefer it all to stay that way so that their pants are squarely around their ankles come kickoff September 20 in BR

Preseason polls are the devil. Teams not in the PRESEASON top 10 or 12 are virtually locked out of a competing for a national championship even if they run the table.

That *might* change with playoff system, but I doubt it.

Yea man, Auburn was on everyone's preseason top 10 last year and the Newton year**

4 out of the last 8 teams to play for the NC started the season outside the AP top 10

Other SEC schools. That's a good sign.

And I know that's not what you meant, but I don't care

We're exactly where we need to be. Let the bears win the press conference and dominate their preseason polls and crootin rankings (well not anymore lol), and we'll just lay low in the weeds and be extra motivated.

I love how we have no hype right now. Fits the bluecollar mentality of our team. Like poster said above, no one predicted Auburn those few yrs to win it all, you just need a elite qb like a Cam, Tebow or even a Dak to make that kind of run. Remember that the polls in December are what matter, all these preseason ones are just so the media can please the big fanbases and get them talking.

No. The four teams were Oregon and Auburn 2010, ND 2012, and Auburn 2013

If you go undefeated in the SEC you're in no matter what the name on your jersey is

can't remember but it seems like Auburn went undefeated several years ago and didn't make it to the NCG

That was 2004, before the SEC's current dominance had really been established.
