Here's hoping we actually get to play the game as scheduled. They'll decide 1 hour prior if the field is playable.

Seems to me that slogging around a mucky mess would be conducive to a low scoring game, perhaps even a nil-nil draw. Could be wrong though.

We used to call my high school soccer field the swamp because of how nasty it got when it rained. Didn't stop the games though!

So, does Ghana/Portugal start a few minutes before or after us? We are pulling for a Portugal win or a tie, correct?

they are roughly the same time. and yes a tie is the best option as that would put us through regardless of our result. If there is a W it will be better if it's Portugal since they are -4 on goal differential and it's highly unlikely that they can make that up.

DawgHouseUnited
06-26-2014, 10:01 AM
Ghana has a couple of their players dropped off the team, can't remember who though.

Cadaver, I think it comes down to point differential. Right now Portugal is at the bottom of the group thanks to point differential, so they can win by a slightly bigger margin and us still be safe.

Someone explain to me the difference between a shot and a shot on goal. I flipped over just for a moment to the ESPN game cast, mainly to see how they game cast soccer, and saw those two stats. How do you have a shot if it is not on goal? Isn't that just a pass?

No it means that someone took a shot but it wasn't on target. It's like a shot that goes way over the goal or wide

But I keep seeing "all we need is a tie" - shouldn't we try to win to get a more favorable next matchup or is that something weird about soccer that I don't understand.

Yes we of course prefer a win because we then play a 2 seed instead of a 1 seed. Germany is the highest ranked team left in the tournament so that's why you're hearing the tie being talked about so much. It's just people being modest in expectations.

DudyDawg
06-26-2014, 11:55 AM
Look at it this way. If msu was playing the number one team in baseball in the nation, of course we want the sweep, but are all talking about "lets just get 2 of 3". A win would be nice, but we don't need it

Hate to call you out again, but this is false. Yellow cards are carried through the quarterfinals now. So, Jones will miss the next match, and Beckerman and Gonzalez will have to play yellow-card free for the next two games. They changed the rules so that both teams would be full strength for the final.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that 2 yellows in the first 5 games draws a one game suspension. So Jones should still be on a yellow until the quarters.

Oh I thought it was only for back to back games. 5 games is a pretty good stretch if that's the case and a little too strict

Edit: It appears that yellows are deleted after the quarter final games. That's kind of crazy

From Wikipedia (I know...)

Players also receive a one match ban if they pick up a single yellow card in two different games from the beginning of the group stage until the end of the quarterfinal matches, at which point single yellow cards will be deleted. However, such a ban does not carry over beyond the World Cup finals if the second yellow card is collected in his team's last match of the tournament.[citation needed] Previously, players received a one match ban if they picked up two yellow cards within the group stage or within the knockout stage. The carried yellow card rule was changed to give players a better chance to compete in the final should their team advance that far.

I really like the Yedlin kid we've brought in late the last couple of weeks. He wreaks havoc with his speed. Any chance Altidore is back for Belgium? We desperately need him.
