Ghana lineup vs USA: Kwarasey; Opare, Mensah, Boye, Asamoah; A. Ayew, Rabiu, Muntari, Atsu; J. Ayew, Gyan

Game coverage begins at 430 central time on Espn

DudyDawg

Main players for them are the Ayews and Gyan. Expect Muntari to battle with Bradley and Jones in the midfield for possession. Will likely try to get balls wide to Ayew for crosses. Our outside backs need to be solid today. Will post our lineup when I see it

Ghana is very strong on the attack. Their back line will make or break them in this tournament, a lot like us. But we have more talent on the back line, just not much chemistry.

Good grief, man. If you want to go there, then soccer teaches that to you even more than baseball. Most players don't score on more than 40% of their shots in soccer, and with ties, it teaches you to cope with things that happen in the real world, like a situation in which neither side wins or loses. In other words, it teaches you how to not approach every situation like a 3-year-old, where every situation is either all good for me or all bad.

It also forces you to interact with people from other cultures so you don't grow up to hate everything that is in any way foreign to you.

In other words, it teaches you how not to be Coach34 or curmudgeon.

Surely there is a soccer board somewhere out there.

Works both ways. You came into a thread that had a title that stated it was anti-US soccer and defended your side. I can come into a game thread and post my thoughts until I fall asleep 10 minutes in.

There are clearly a lot of posters here who want to talk soccer. If you tell them to stop posting about it, then you're going to lose several good posters. Meanwhile, you have the clear option of just not entering these threads or reading them. Pretty simple.

And you also might lose some good posters by being a dick and inserting yourself into threads just to try to derail them.

So in both scenarios, you lose posters. Or you can let them talk soccer and stay out of it, and everyone wins.

Yea, all those that juice up in baseball to be great really have good discipline and character. I hope you enjoy baseball while it lasts because if you haven't noticed, it is a slowly dying sport. Just look at the thousands of empty seats at every professional game. Soccer will probably pass it in ten years if the trend continues because the game of baseball is too slow and needs changes to increase the speed or add energy/interest to the game. It's just barely ahead of golf in pace, and I honestly believe golf will be near flatline dead when Woods and Mickelson retire because no one has stepped up to carry that sport.

I'm not sure we need them to overpower a weak USA team. You see in Ghana, we don't have popsicles. Well, we don't have electricity to power freezers to freeze popsicles. But our players do not get popsicles after the game like USA players. USA will be weakened by years of sugar after games. Plus, this is being played in the middle of the Amazon rain forest. We are familiar with the heat. Some of the USA players play in Seattle where there is no heat.

I saw you talking in another thread earlier about Germany using a false number nine. What exactly is that?

Traditionally, the number mine in soccer is given to the goal scorer, the pure striker on the team who does no defending and stays around the box all game. A false number nine is basically a way to say that they didn't play a forward and used a mix of midfielders up front.

I assume 4-5-1 with Beckerman, Jones and Bradley in the middle? And Dempsey out wide.

Or is Dempsey in the triangle and Jones wide?. I'm not able to watch right now. It's almost a 4-2-3-1

It will be Dempsey and Altidore up front together, with Dempsey occasionally dropping to get possession. The midfield will have jones to the right, Bedoya left, Bradley a bit forward, and beckerman purely holding. Expect jones to be much deeper and almost look like a 4-2-2-2 at times with two men holding as Bradley pushed forward

DudyDawg
06-16-2014, 04:36 PM
Can almost call it a 4-4-2 with the midfield four being a very tight diamond with every one interchanging except for beckerman. He's basically a third center back pushed ten yards up

Besler and Cameron have looked good enough tonight. Beasley really bad at left back. The biggest change we need to make is possession in the midfield. when we win the ball back, we've been giving back the ball way too fast, and it hasn't hurt yet, but that lack of possession will wear us out in the long run. Need Bradley to take charge of the midfield, he has been pedestrian so far.

The biggest problem with losing Jozy isn't losing goals, its losing the ability to hammer the ball up to him to hold up. Puts more reassure on our midfield to posses, and they need to step up if we want to hold on.

Certainly looks that way. They are just totally kicking our ass right now. It's like we're in the prevent defense of soccer. F that, get the ball and go for the kill. Best D is still a good offense.

Nope. Poor game by our midfield as far as possession goes. Also hurts not having Jozy. That's a bigger loss than you would think in possession

Pretty much exactly how I feel. Once aGAIN, it's like we're borrowing Mullen's 2013 Auburn strategy: Sit on the lead, play prevent, and hope it doesn't bite us in the ass. Well, that shit sucks and why so many can't get into soccer. Try to f'n score, dammit.

Yep, we're trying to win 1-0. The game such a strategy always makes me think of is the first football game I went to at Scott Field in '84 when Ballard tried to sit on a 13-10 lead over Kentucky. We lost 17-13 of course.

It's that fact that obviously the majority of people on this board enjoy soccer and are trying to have a discussion on what is the biggest sporting event in the world that only happens every 4 years (on par with the Olympics in scale) and you're being a twat and making it unbareable. And the majority of people coming to ED at this very second are obviously coming to talk about soccer, not our chances at a f'ing guard. It's June, douchebag. If you're here in the offseason to talk about anything other than sports you're lonely. If you're here to rag on other people's sports you're even more pathetic than I thought you were.

And I don't care that you don't like the NBA. I haven't seen you attack everyone trying to talk about it. You seem to respect their boundaries. You might be a decent person in real life, but you appear to be a miserable human being based on the way you've acted today and are just as much of a piece of trash as the people who have private messaged you.

It wasn't you esplanade. If I took it seriously, it'd be more than being "banned from a message board."

Lets end it. Some of you love soccer. Some of us despise it with a fiery passion. Jack's about to kick someone's ass.

Oh, I know it wasn't me.

And all I've been trying to get you to do all night is to quit shitting on the US in a public forum of people who are actively trying to discuss American soccer. Quit trying to be high and mighty the second someone says they're going to roll your house.

Stay off of soccer threads and I'll stay off of baseball threads talking about how it's the most boring and illegal immigrant related sport in existence.

Its perfectly fine that you don't like soccer. Its even ok that you have a far fetched conspiracy against soccer and modern youth. The problem is you express your beliefs in about the most ignorant, narrow-minded, and abrasive way possible. Ouch. I agree with this fully btw. Quit posting in the soccer threads if you don't like soccer. It's pretty simple.

Why can't people just say "I'll leave it alone if you will leave it alone." Without adding the bold part. Have to get the last shot. You were trying to end it then potentially offended way more people with your illegal immigrant comment about baseball. You are so angry defending your stance on soccer you've become lost.

You realize several people have been saying that the only reason soccer is gaining popularity in the US is because illegal immigrants, right? They said this. Today. On this board. That is what he is referring to.

Seen it is right. That's exactly what I did. Should I have done it? No. But this is the most ridiculous conversation of all time that rational thought does not apply.

No I'm not keeping up. Because some of the shit coming out of both sides is ****ing retarded. I think soccer is ****ing stupid but to each his own, hell I got jumped even after I said I didn't know the rules and needed an explanation on why a tie could possibly be good (way to go Esplanade, great job**). But some of this shit is irrational and uncalled for and no one wants to have the stones to quit being total ****ing morons about it and just stop looking like asshats. Nevermind it's a message board carry on.

This is just kind of the wrong way of looking at it. Think of it this way, we have a 7-6 lead on Bama in the 4th quarter and Relf at QB. Do you want us to throw it deep on every play?

Once altidore went down, our main form of attack (playing it up to him and letting him hold it until other attackers catch up) was thrown off. Ghana has a midfield full of players that play for top clubs in Europe. They were faster and pressured is into turning it over. If we relentlessly attacked, we would have push 7 guys up field, turned it over, they Ghana is off to the races towards our goal. Not only are they fast, but they also can also finish with shots on goal (as evidenced by the Ayew goal). We did what we had to do with out midfielders being slow and having trouble possessing the ball.

Yup. Losing Jozy really hurt us in more ways than just scoring

Thought Beasely had a bad game, or at least a bad first half. They picked on him and continued to attack his side of the field. Play from our midfielders was poor. Poor touches, poor passes, etc. It really hurt losing Altidore. I've never been a big fan but he is crucial to that part of our attack so I hope he can return for the match against Portugal.

Official release: Dempsey has broken nose and Altidore will be evaluated for his strained hamstring.

Definitely didn't play a great game, but getting the W was huge. Hopefully Jozy's hammy isn't as bad as it looked and he can come back for Germany or if we are fortunate enough to make it out of the group. If I am correct, assuming Germany beats Ghana, a tie against Portugal will be good enough.

Dawg61
06-17-2014, 09:46 AM
Tie would mean Portugal has to make up 5 goals on us in the last games, which isn't impossible just unlikely.

Statefan

Yep, a tie against Portugal pretty much gets us out of this group.

I know most that are not really into soccer or are completely unaware of how the points work in a group will hate this, but expect us to bunker down and try to grind out a draw with lots of defenders.

It's gonna be a tense 90. Portugal will be desperate for 3 points, so they may push guys forward and open themselves up for a counter attack and give us a chance to get a goal or two

DudyDawg

Bradley was flat out bad. He and Beasley were our worst players, but are usually two of our most consistent. So I'm not worried about those two going forward, frankly because they can't be worse.

The good thing is, Portugal's midfield also looked poor at best. Granted, they had ten men a lot of the game, but that was after they went 2-0 down. I think our midfield four can be better than their midfield three, and that needs to happen for us to get a favorable result. If they dominate possession in the final third like Ghana, we will lose. CR7 will not miss as many chances as the wingers from ghana did.

The only problem I have with that is we seemed to go to the Standsbury Stall immediately after our goal in the first 30 seconds. If we hadn't started stalling until after Altidore went down, I'd be more inclined to agree. But that's just my observation as someone who only pretends to care about soccer every 4 years until the US inevitably loses. Then I won't bother giving a damn for another 4 years.

We actually made a few attacks in the first 15 minutes. Jozy was running down the left and attracting a lot of attention, but you are right it was a very defensive gameplay. I hope that was the gameplan at least. Ghana was more talented and simply won the midfield. They had the ball a lot but few really good shots and chances on goal. That's a positive at least
