His battle with cancer. Remember, that's why he wasn't coaching SDSU in the Regional. Send your condolences to the Aztec fans if you run across any.

I found an article written back in April of this year that he had a tumor removed from the inside of his right cheek. I guess too many years of Copenhagen are too blame.

Crazy stat about Tony Gwynn's career: In 9,288 AB, he only struck out 434 times. That's INSANE!

Phenomenal hitter and a nicer person. He'll be missed. His son plays for the Phillies. RIP Tony Gwynn

Considering the avg. player now is striking out 100 times per year and a ton of guys are over 150 per year that's simply amazing.

Dan Uggla says that's nothing and he will strike out 10 times that much in his career.

Only struck out 3 times total vs. Maddux/Glavine/Smoltz during their run together in ATL

That he was. I'm a huge Reds fan, and during the 80's and 90's the Reds and Padres played a lot when both were in the NL West. He was one of the few guys that I didn't get pissed about when he got hits against the Reds because A:it was Tony Gwynn and you knew it would happen and B:it was Tony Gwynn and he was one of the best guys ever. I met Tony, Jr. when he was playing in Pearl with the Huntsville Stars. Very nice kid and you could tell he was raised right. R.I.P Tony Gwynn, the best hitter I ever saw play.
