I like the cubs focus on hitting. When the game is skewed so heavily in towards 1 side, it makes the other that much more valuable. Pitching is great, but a savvy franchise can find SPs that can put up a 3.25-3.75 era and 6-7K/9IP over 180+ IP all over the place. But finding .300+ hitters with pop is much harder in today's game. Cubs have the best bunch of MiLB bats in the league and only getting stronger.

Um ok. Bumgarner, Hudson, Cain are locks for at least two more years. Lincecum and Vogelsong probably stay through this year and next. Then the Giants will be looking to move 1-2 guys up. Beede is considered one of the closest to MLB ready SP in this draft. Stratton is a SP. How does this not affect him and his projected call-up? They only have so many SP in the minors even sniffing consideration and Beede was/is drafted to be pitching within 3 years tops. I get that each player ultimately decides their future to a point based on their success but this certainly doesn't make Stratton's path any easier.

The guys on MLB Network said he's a 1B/OF (sounds like his OF defense probably isn't great, probably doesn't run extremely well)...they initially compared him to Brandon Belt, but then Harold Reynolds said he thinks he's the second-best hitter in regard to potential in the draft.

6'3" 215, sounds like he has the potential to be a big-time hitter; it'll be interesting to see where he plays defensively, though. We can't use him if he can't play the OF.

All I'm saying is that regardless of how they project things, Stratton can force their hand. If he pitches lights out, they're not going to keep him in the minors just because they had another guy pegged ahead of him. It'll be about performance, that's my only point.

Stratton controls his fate. Pitch well, and he'll be in the bigs.

That JUCO catcher batting .176 or whatever it was is turning back flips and high fiving folks right now.

Lovelady is a walk-on. With Gavin, we don't exactly need Johnny Bench. We DO need a guy that can catch because Vallot isn't going to come to school and we have two seniors and then Gavin. If we didn't get Lovelady, our catching depth chart in two years would be Gavin and then Hunter Stovall, a freshman.

you guys who are down on Collins are crazy. He hits decently(pretty dang good for a frosh) and he just simply is not run on because of his amazingly quick release and outstanding arm.. His only downfall is blocking up hard throwing slider throwers. Again, as a freshman! He will finish his career barring injury, as one of the best we've seen play catcher at MSU and will be a very high draft pick.

I agree. Collins will prove any naysayers wrong (and there are only a few naysayers anyway, they're fools). Besides, he may not ever have to catch a Lindgren type pitcher ever again. A guy with that much of a lack of control, combined with the movement all of his pitches had.....I bet that was tough as hell.

Well, until we sign another one that's where he is going to be as of now. I could see second base- but I don't think we can say where he is going to be right now until our class fills out.

But you were adamant about him being in the first round....just say the words...I WAS WRONG. You can do it. Be strong.

I said at the time no way in hell he was a first rounder. I was wrong about 8-9 but at the time he hadn't done shit and I stated he would have to show lights out stuff to jump up. And he did and proved me wrong. But I told you there was no way anyone was going to use a first round pick on him as a reliever. He may end up be a lights out closer and I had heard word the Yankees weren't going to pass on him if he was there with their first pick..Pat McMahon is very high in their scouting department and LOVED him. 1) It looks terrible for State fans to constantly call our own headcases.
2) It likely isn't true, and we certainly don't have any way of knowing. He struggles with command at times, and his stuff works better out of the pen where he can go more max effort and only worry about throwing two pitches. That's what we know. Is it going to hurt his feelings? If so then he is. I'm making what I think is an educated observation from my baseball experience and I think he has to get mentally tougher. I promise you our staff talks about mental toughness. He needs to get some. And we could have used him having some. I want him to become Billy Wagner. He's got a very bright future ahead of him (as do some young readers of this board... many may want to go to State but change their minds after witnessing how you treat your highest draft pick)
Stop with the name calling and show some class and support..
(I really CAN'T believe I just had to say that to STATE fans!!)

Haha you think they did? I think he has a bright future too. If he can grow some stones and become tough as hell. He never showed that toughness here but he absolutely can because he is still young. He's a big boy now going into a mans world and I hope for his sake and yours that he welcomes it, challenges it, and becomes what we all hope he will be because go it. I'm not and I hope no one else is hating on him. I expect him to be a big leaguer soon and I hope a good one. He has work to do as expected. The one great thing for him is he has all the talent to make it, which is the thing that only a select few have.

I didn't start the head case thing and it's a little much to go that far with him and that's wrong. However, not a damn sole on here said a word about the term "head case" until all of a sudden he's drafted and the deficiencies he had while here, although super talented, are just to supposed to disappear. Sounds like some posters as well need to toughen up.

If you are a pitcher, and I don't give a shit who you are, you better be the toughest SOB that walks into the ballpark. If you're not you gonna have a tough time making it big time. He has shown the talent, I don't think he has exhibited the toughness. And that's my beef and it's my beef with any player that has no stones. I promise you I will not discriminate if a player lacks testicular fortitude.

Some of you need to get over what you think is a personal attack. I don't know him and my guess is he is a great kid. If our fans and the players that come here can't handle being "mentally tough" then piss off and go somewhere else. I promise when these guys get on campus they are challenged everyday by our coaching staffs of all sports to be mentally tough and that it takes that to win in this league.

Damn people pop your cherries and grow a pair. Toughen up.

In the 2nd round. With top 5 pick stuff. He's as filthy as Rodon or Nola. Why wasn't he picked there?

Nobody drafts RP in the 1st round. The fact Lindgren got picked in the 2nd and with the Yankees first pick is a huge compliment. Then the Yankees draft our other RP Holder in the 6th. Wow. We could see both of them pitching in Yankee stadium this year playing next to Derek Jeter and one year removed from Mariano Rivera. Awesome!!

I hope Lindgren succeeds because we are all Bulldogs. But for all you saying he is gonna be in the Yankee bullpen this summer....With his showing at ULL, not being able to start for whatever reason which has been widely speculated over the last 2 yrs, etc., how does anybody think he is going to react facing David Ortiz at Fenway with the bases juiced in a 1 run game with 1 out...in the 8th inning? Well folks that is about to be his job. He has a ways to go. His talent is there but the rest has to catch up.

As far as talent goes Lindgren is very special. Like top 5-10 pick special. Meaning when he is good and right. Evaluating nothing else but pure stuff.

I don't think anyone could have asked for anything better from him this year (with the exception of a different outcome at ULL). He'll be in the thick of it very soon and will find out exactly what he needs to succeed .. A few weeks ago, he was the golden God who everyone wanted to see in that big moment, now he's a 'head case'?? I do know him, and I've never heard anyone say anything remotely similar.. He's just a VERY relaxed 21 year old kid trying to figure it out.
And this draft was pretty unconventional. I thought AJ Reed would go much sooner and they might pick some pitchers who weren't, you know.. Injured! Pure insanity!!

Meh. Not head case. Prove the existence of stones

If Lindgren is in the Yankee bullpen in September- the Yankees are in ****ing trouble. He is talented- but he dont have the nuts yet to be in that moment in front of 40K. He would have a brown stain on those pin striped pants

The difference between lindgren and bj Wallace is this....Wallace was a starter, lindgren was a reliver, Wallace had 3+ pitches w a forth in his pocket. Lindgren had 2 plus pitches and that's really all. Wallace was truly a head case. Lindgren I have no clue other than internet talk. Wallace went third in the draft- lindgren went 55th. Wallace blew his money and never made it past double a. We will see w Jacob, but he won't be in the majors in the next year, If he is I'll be shocked.

BJ Wallace was the most talented pitcher State ever had. And the best damn dart player I've ever had the pleasure of seeing (altho Blake Anderson may dispute that due to the scar). But BJ was a wildass alcoholic partyer that partied himself out of baseball.
