Renowned author Maya Angelou has died today at the age of 86 in Winston-Salem, NC. She won three Grammies. She was also nominated for a Pulitzer, Tony (Broadway Awards), and an Emmy with her role in the series "Roots". Her most famous work is her autobiography "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings"

This is truly a sad day.

Indeed sad. I always found this fascinating, that she mostly became well-known because of her autobiography. Most people are already famous, thus why they write autobiographies to begin with.

Never heard of her. When I saw the title I was thinking Soccer Player.

She was a trendsetter in the world of memoirs.

A hundred better writers will die this year and you won't hear word one about them.

It's a powerhouse of a book. Not a typical autobiography. I'm not a fan of her poetry, but this book is one of the top essentials of the era. She was better at putting poetry into prose than she was at putting it into lines. That and its brutal reality is what sets Caged Bird in a high place. Every word is fresh forever.
