Well he didn't get the job done there. The LAST thing we needed tonight was extra innings and that's if we even are still able to win.

Why is Holder good? Serious question. He has a good curve (some days). His fastball seems to stay in the upper 80's, and he has no other pitch. I don't understand why he's done well.

Also, I didn't realize that Detz is playing second now.

Yep. Holder badly needs a 3rd pitch. He's a pitch-to-contact closer, and that drives me nuts. It's harder for those guys to finish games because they're relying on their defense to make plays behind them. I much prefer the closers who come in throwing gas and strike guys the F out. I'm all for letting Dakota Hudson take a crack at closer. With his heat for 1 inning, he'd be hell as a closer.

yes! Agree completely. have said that several times myself. I don't care who you are, if you have been seeing a 86-88mph fastball all day and then see a 95 mph fastball it is almost impossible to hit.

He's averaging almost 13 K's per 9...2nd in the country to Lindgren I believe is what they said. Sorry, but what are you talking about "pitch to contact"? He just doesn't have much snap on his curve tonight. Nothing more, nothing less. He's typically a K machine.

If Detz could catch the damn ball, Holder never enters.

I'm not sure how accurate the radar gun is at Hoover but other than the 93 MPH Holder threw for the 2nd out his FBs have been between 85-88 MPH. He is usually in the 89-92 MPH range. That concerns me. His CB hasn't been as sharp and his FB not as explosive. The CB is good, but it's even better when the FB is 16-20 MPH faster. If he's between 85-88, that's only an 11-14 MPH difference. Big difference for a hitter.

Even if we win, it is ridiculous for us to go to extra innings when we had a 2 out lead with 2 outs in the top of 9th. Yes I know that's just how the game is sometimes, but still very frustrating.

On a side note, Detz has had a great game both at the plate and in the field.

Yea, just when we think it's a good move to swap Rea and Detz, Detz goes ofer and misses a game winning catch head high, while Rea drives 2 runs and is burned

Quick question. Do we teach a scouting report or do our hitters not read it? I'm sitting here calling 90% of pitches for both teams, without either scouting report. It shouldn't be that difficult for our hitters to know what pitches are coming.

I'm joining will. I hate all the sac bunts. For a team that can't get a 2-out hit for nothing, we need to use all our outs.

This is what everyone needs to understand.

Amazing what can happen when you apply pressure to a bad defense isn't it.

Blame is on Detz 80% Holder 19% and Cohen 1%

Really? you can honestly say that in hindsight with a straight face? Holder is our closer. No way you didnt bring him in. and he has earned the right to work his way out of the jam which he did by not allowing the go ahead run to score (even if UGA screwed up to cause the out)

Looks like I'm doing PBP tomorrow, also. I'm working on the forecast now!

First: Ref, have to say you have done the best play by play this year that I have seen. Cadaver and Iseenit have also done a great job all year. Loved Ref's commentary as well as keeping the stats updated in almost every post he did.

Second: I was at the game tonight which is why I was decidedly quiet in this thread. A couple of thoughts. We absolutely have to have Rea back in the lineup as an every day starter and we need to put Detz at the DH role. We need to put all of our experience out there and ride it regardless of whether a left handed pitcher is pitching or a right handed pitcher is pitching. He has got to quit this match up shit. If he doesn't put Rea in the game in a Pinch Hit role, we lose that game tonight. You guys still want Rea to move on next year? I sure as shit don't. I'd love to have him one more year and I believe he would have the year next year that we thought he would have this year.

The next thought is Laster did one hell of a job on the mound tonight. He did an incredible job. Our starting rotation will be pretty dang awesome next year with the experince we will be returning. Holder had a crap game but hopefully he got that out of his system. Better to has it now against a shit team like Georgia then a team like USC we play tomorrow. I think he will be fine.

Well guys, great way to end it. On a walk off error by the catcher throwing to first base. Glad we got the win and hopefully we can ride that type of win to at least the semifinals. I'd like to beat USC and Florida at least once. I think if we can match Ross up with Flordia we have a shot. I think with the way Fitts is pitching we should stand a chance against USC as well. Our pitching should keep us in every game. If we can just get those bats going to score even 3-4 runs we could make a heck of a run. I am optimistic we can. Great win tonight and it's great to be a Bulldog!

Just because a made up arbitrary term "closer" is designated to Holder doesn't mean he's your best option, especially vs lefty batters.

The fact that he holds just about every save record that we have likely means that he's a pretty good option. It's not like LH hitters are tearing him apart either.

And then there is the fact that if we burn Lindgren tonight then we can't use him as much- or at all- against South Carolina, which we know we probably (99% chance) will unless Trevor Fitts pitches the game of his life tomorrow.

Then there's the fact that Lindgren can be wild at times/can't be caught- much more so than Holder. How many wild pitch/passed ball runs has he allowed this year? Plus we would have had to take out Collins, which means that we wouldn't have had him to get his leadoff single in the 10th inning to come around to score.

Not sure about Lindgren following Fitts. Looked like he was throwing in the bullpen for about six innings last night. He got hot about four or five times and never went in. That will take its toll on an arm.

Holder, much like lindgren, seem to pitch well in mid inning relief, when the game isnt on the line.

Im not sure who Id trust to get a final out with the game on the line. We cant pitch ross. Lindgren Id guess but it is risky with his pass ball tendancy.

Wish we had a mitch moreland type or aaron weatherford

Edit - so holder blows the game, gets the win and lowers his ERA?
