Okay guys...we have had two days of absolute Hell down here in the South. Sad thing is, we're not done yet. Here is what SPC has out for their Day 1 Convective Outlook.

http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/outlook/day1otlk_1300.gif

As you can see, this polygon DOES include Starkville, MS and most of East-Central MS. This line of storms that will develop in the afternoon will interact with a mid-level jet (between 700 and 500 mb) to produce some really strong uplift. Add in CAPE values around 2000-2500 J/kg and you have instability that you need. The only thing that's limiting me on the tornado threat is the Southwesterly flow at the surface. This all is associated with a decaying MCS (Mesoscale Convective System) that has been the driving force for all of our severe weather lately. But as we progress from afternoon into evening, the strong supercell threat will decrease and this will turn more into a linear system, or a QLCS (Quasi-linear convective system). But once again, this thing is still not something we want to mess with today. We've seen what it can do in the right circumstance. This isn't the GREATEST setup in the world but I believe it can still produce some fairly strong tornadoes and if it doesn't produce a tornado near you then you still have a straight-line wind and hail threat that you'll have to watch out for. I will be out of pocket between 3:30 and around 4:45 today due to class. I know y'all will keep this thing running for me while I'm gone. If y'all have any questions/concerns please feel free to ask.

And this is NOT what you want to see before a severe weather event. Clear skies = sunlight = more instability = worse severe weather.

Yeah, sunny skies are really a bad thing right now - heat increases instability.

Once this thing fires up, don't be surprised to see it take the same amount of time to develop its stronger storms. This thing will be pretty bad once it starts up.

Yesterday, the storms started initiation in Northeast LA. Today I think they will start roughly in the I-55 corridor.

I chased Sunday and Monday but think I may take today off unless they are very near Starkville. Didn't get in until 5:00am after the Arkansas tornado Sunday and then just a couple hours of sleep before going yesterday. No sleep and near $4 diesel can be a limiting factor. Plus my employer doesn't believe in unlimited vacation for some strange reason.

Starkville is on the edge of the Moderate risk area, yes. Even if we were in the slight risk area, however, I would advise that you still treat this as a potentially dangerous situation. Keep a reliable source of info nearby in case something does happen.

Quite understandable on not responding. I was near you some of yesterday. I started in Ackerman after a police officer there gave me permission to set up behind the hospital since it had a good view to the W and SW. I was going to just sit there and wait on the storm from Yazoo City. My patience ran out and I decided to meet it half way around Ethel or Kosciusko. By the time I got there the storm had really started losing steam and I saw another good hook down to my south heading to Louisville (I think we know how that turned out) so I made a mad dash down Hwy 9 to it. First and (I say) last time I ever punch a core trying to get to a tornado. That was not good for the nerves trying to make sure I didn't over drive and come out right in it's path. I ended up near the Wal-Mart there and watched it from a gas station with some chasers from CA. It was still obscured in rain for most of my viewing time since I was looking south from the edge of the core but it was close enough for me to hear the roar. I was then going to hit Hwy 14 and shoot across to Macon to set up on it again on 45ALT. but as soon as I did that the next storm just to its south went tornado warned and no sooner than I got out of town I looked up and that one was heading right at me. I was stuck there on the highway trying to decide if I just sit there and hope it misses me or try to outrun it through the hail core. After I remembered what I saw on I-40 while stuck in traffic outside Mayflower, AR, the day before I decided the hail core didn't sound too bad. I ended up finding a north running road just after getting in the core and took it so on that second storm I was less than a mile from the southern edge of the hook and the eastern edge of the hook. I have no doubts that country road has not seen many Dodge Rams going as fast as I was down that road trying to get north of of the circulation. After that I called it a day and headed back to the house. I didn't have a solid route to get me ahead of any more storms and the family was freaking out because the news kept saying a tornado near Starkville (evidently, Brooksville is near Starkville for TWC). They were nervous so I shut things down. After reading the latest from the SPC I am starting to get the bug to go out again today on something near the GT area. I work right by GTR airport so I have access to go south and east pretty easily.

No intent to brag here. The setup for this system was pretty obvious days in advance. Over at storm2k I posted this Friday morning at 10:

This event, IN MY OPINION, will be a non-event for most, if not all of the metroplex. The dry line will push to or just east of the I/35 corridor/metroplex Saturday night/Sunday morning when heating is gone, so I don't expect much at all from this event.

Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi & Alabama MIGHT see PDS tornado watches.

Thanks for all the info you have supplied Ref and the video that you and Aaron put together. I'm sure glad Directv saw fit to bring TWC back. With TWC and WAPT Weather, I think we get excellent severe weather coverage in the Jackson Metro area. Shortly after those storms came across the river yesterday, they just exploded into tornadic super cells. I have the Red Cross Tornado App on my phone and that is real good for alerts as well as NOAA Weather Radio. No Meso discussion on Storm Prediction Center yet, but more than likely will be forthcoming. Prayers also go out to those who have been impacted by this severe weather.

And I would like to say that none of my beloved weather apps were worth a shit yesterday except for Radar Scope (Google it).

I was disappointed in Weather Alert USA, the customizeable NOAA alert radio app. It didn't chrip a damn thing until hours after everything was over. Could have been cell phone network disruptions (who needs those...). Who knows.

Storms already developing and intensifying over north LA between Monroe and Vicksburg. I agree with those that have said today won't touch yesterday but I don't think it's going to be a walk in the park either. I told myself I wasn't chasing today but I think I may have lied to myself this morning. I hate when I do that. Now the decision on whether or not to have my wife get my girl out of school early. If it didn't take a frigging hour for her to do the carpool thing it might be easier to do a wait and see approach. But once she is in carpool she is locked in line for the duration. If a tornadic storm or just one with large hail came through then she is just there to ride it out and large hail and moon roofs are not a good combination.

By the way. RadarScope is wonderful. My mom put it on her phone Sunday and she is scared to death of storms and woudln't chase if her life depended on it. I recommend it for anybody...chaser or not. Very nice to be able to pick out hail cores and storm rotation anytime you want and have to wait on the local news to get back to your storm when they are covering an entire region. Or when the damn NOAA tower is out where you live and your weather radio I have been harping on to anyone who will listen to buy is no more than a paper weight right now.

I've been watching these supercells trying to develop along the dry line moving in from the West all day. It seems to me they are having trouble developing south of I-20. North of I-20 they seem to be better organized. Not saying the forecast was a bust, it's just strange that the SPC outlined a more southern event and they seem to be stronger towards the north.

Maybe these cellular storms in the south just have not hit the most unstable air mass quite yet? They are just now moving over the Natchez Trace and that was the apparent line of instability to the SE. It seems like they are just now looking ominous over I-55

Whew!!! He left. Headed towards Laurel now.

Are you still watching Brett Adair? That guy is a idiot but it's high comedy for something so serious.

Just got back home from chasing. Went down to a storm south of Philadelphia. It tried two or three times to get its act together but never could. It tried its best, though. At one time it had a well defined wall cloud with some slow rotation but then fell apart again.

Thankfully it's best was not good enough!

Is it over? Man that Brandon dude had me worried. He left 84 near my house and headed east. Then he turned around and drove right by my house but kept going then headed south toward Columbia. He got on 98 and headed toward my house we live in now in Oak Grove! I was like "Damn!!!!!!" I don't know where he went after that. I don't see much activity now.

At first I didn't know what in the hell was going on in the top right corner of the screen, that's a light reflection isn't it?

Oh man you're in for it now! You weren't supposed to notice that! That's the exhaust plumes from a squadron of those new 'secret' jets we fly out of Area 51. Please remain where you are and some nice gentlemen wearing black suits and Raybans will be by shortly to debrief you.

Scooba, I was watching all these guys Monday and one team almost got into a fight in Starkville. I forget which one it was but he was wanting to head towards Eupora from the 82/45 intersection and kept making wrong turns. First, he turned off the bypass at the Clayton Village exit when coming in from the east then, when he is about to get back on the bypass at the north end of campus, he suddenly stops and starts to turn around when his partner tells him to keep going then starts screaming at him that "I'm looking at the MAP! Keep going!"

While watching this guy trying to get from West Point to Eupora, I was able to verify thanks to his dash cam, that the huge, chrome stallion at the Pony was still standing proud.

If I hear warning, debris ball, rotation, radar, or tornado one more ****ing time I'm gonna puke. The last 2 days feel like a month.

The lack of sleep doesn't help. I was without electricity a lot last night. Long story, but I didn't sleep much.

Regardless, I have a roof over my head and a healthy family so I need to feel blessed and greatful for that.

How long to kickoff?

That was him, he was pissed off everyone in the world was calling him wanting a comment about where he was and seeing. I picked him up right after the Tupelo tornado, he was heading south on 45 and trying to find a to to head west and kept looking at small roads nope, i flipped around to some other streams when he turned around and headed north and then turned around again, next thing i knew he was in west point and i figured he would catch 50 west instead they start screaming about the southern most storm that was blowing up around noxapater i think. Well they high tale it down 45 all the while while bretts yelling I don't care if the president of the us calls i aint answering it. the high comedy of that was later he gave out his number on the air on the phone. So they take a right towards starksville and okkTibewho county and catch 182 into campus and then the make the classic mistake and catch 12 EAST and you hear someone saying why are we going east, no were not. yes we are. oh that's better so they end up back on 82, hey werent we just on 82? and catch 25 south to around the refuge when they realize they are now directly north of the storm and they start freaking out about how rough it was and to retreat back, lets take this poor house road it will get us to 45...ugh no.
So they got on back up to 82 and over to 45A and headed south, they actually got a really good view of the brooksville tornado when they went down a very small road while all the other 5 chasers waited on 45. Then they headed back north to 82 but instead caught 182, which they quickly realized doesn't cross the river and had to backtrack.

I mean seriously, you are a storm chaser and someone in your car cant use a freaking gps or google maps. were they trying to thumb through a mapsco or something?
I only put him on because i thought I recognized his name from somewhere and his twitter says he is a MSU meteorology student. Well he sure hasn't ever been in this GTR area much if any it seemed like (yes im aware a lot of people take the degree online).

He kept broadcasting all the way back to Birmingham where he lives as the storms picking up there at night.
