Draft insider Tony Pauline reports that Mississippi State QB Tyler Russell "put on a passing clinic" in a private workout for the Patriots, Packers and Chiefs on Thursday.
"His deep passes were on the money and Russell was also accurate with short and intermediate throws," Pauline wrote. Because Russell's senior season was ruined by a concussion and a torn labrum, he may not be drafted. However, the 6-foot-4, 221-pounder has intriguing tools and is a decent developmental option due to his size and arm strength. Pauline adds that running back LaDarius Perkins was a "beneficiary" of the workout because he "really impressed scouts with his pass catching skills." Apr 25 - 7:25 PM

Packers - backup is Matt Flynn of LSU
Chiefs - Alex Smith & Tyler Bray of UT & Chase Daniel of Mizzou
Patriots - Ryan Mallett is the backup

I could see Tyler competing with any of those once placed in a pro-style system & surrounded with pro-style WRs. Really hope he can latch on with a team.

Continues by saying "a practice squad prospect" who could have a shot at a roster spot with some rehad/coaching.

His arm is a thing of beauty. He's also got the balls of a man twice his size. But his footwork sucks. If he can get some 1-on-1 with a great coach, I think he's got at least a decent career ahead of him.

Thad Lewis started in the NFL this year... after going in drafted and spending time on the practice squad. It's not unheard of.

I agree, right system, with the right coaching and Russell can make a practice squad or maybe even a roster. He just played in the wrong system for the wrong coach. He is a great teammate too.

It's too bad that NFL Europe isn't still around for guys like Tyler.

I seen it dawg

Hope he catches on somewhere. If he doesn't he will be valuable for some business entity in the real world.

Patriots would be a good fit. Packers would be an even better fit if they had an OL to keep him from needing to scramble like Rodgers has to.

It's amazing that Dak, Russell, and even Williams have such differences in footwork.

The better the athlete, typically, the better the footwork

I think he'd be an excellent #3 and oractice squad guy for a year. I think he needs some time looking at NFL speed, but if he can get to an offense where they run 90% of the plays out of the pocket he'd do well. As other said, the Pats would be a good fit.

I think people will be surprised just how well Tyler would preform in a pro system. We all know he never had a chance to show his skills in our running the spread. Best of luck, by all accounts, to a great young player and teammate!

There was never any doubt someone would bring him into camp- will be interesting to see how he does. Maybe he can hang on somewhere on the practice squad

Most Qb's aren't athletic...Manning, Brady, ...etc. The league has made a move for athletic Qb's. It goes back to work ethic.

If he can pick up the reads and make quicker decisions he will be attractive to several teams. The arm and frame are there, he just needs more experience in a pro system.

He'll get a fair shot, even if it comes from bing on a practice squad. Tony Romo was a practice squad QB for the Cowboys. Brady was a 6th round pick. The NFL leaves no leaf unturned in finding good QBs.

Could he a steal to someone much like Ryan Griffin from Tulane was for the Saints.

Saints picked him up right after the draft, stuck him on the practice squad behind Brees and McCown and now is #2. Has all the tools.

Errr.....WHAT????

Just because they are tall and white you say they aren't a good athlete? I guarandamntee you those two guys could school 99% of the population in just about any sport they wanted.

This is one of the biggest farces out there. Some of you really believe it was Dan Mullen's 'system' that held Tyler Russell back? As others have alluded to, yes, it was his footwork most of all.

I think he meant mobile.

He'll get better with footwork. Where Tyler has to get better is quicker decision-making. His arm is fine- but his internal clock isn't. If his clock can speed up- he may land a job

Russell has some tools to be a good qb. His size, solid arm, and smarts give him a chance. Decision making, concrete feet, and struggles when receivers aren't open right out of the break are the things he will have to work on to make it. With a good oline and some solid receivers, he could shine. That could be said about alot of qbs though.

NFL coaches will have the sense to not take a pocket passer QB and force him to run a zone read. How many times did he injure or tweak a knee or something else doing that?

And no off the field issues.. he could make a team , practice squad what ever and they wont have to worry about off the field BS with him..

I think he'll make a roster. He's got tremendous physical tools and more football intelligence than any other bulldog in my memory. He's also a great learner and very open to coaching and improving. Go Tyler!

It's hard for me to believe he won't be able to stay on a team as long as he'd like. Somebody with all the tools to mimic the pocket passers of the upcoming defense, no worry about off field problems or him not putting the work in, plus if it does turn out he just needs some individual coaching or a better situation as far as protection, wide receivers, and system, he's got the physical tools to be a good NFL qb. Don't know how much practice players get paid though or how long Russell would want to do that if he felt like he wasn't likely to make it off the practice squad.

Not to mention how many marquee college qb's have been a pro bust. Tyler Russell is built for the NFL. A lot of teams are not where they need to be at his position. I'm looking forward to watching his progress, which I predict will be faster and better than a lot of people think it will be.
