is getting very close to 300 saves. He's at 292 right now. I think we should start to take notice and MSU should recognize this amazing accomplishment one of our own is getting so close to becoming a member of. Paps is top 30 all-time in career saves. He's had a terrific MLB career.

If he can get to 400 he would be in the HOF discussion. Probably not first ballot because of the nature of his position- but definitely in the discussion.

he's not getting any younger and the past couple of years or so he's been relatively ineffective.

I dont think he is a HOF guy even at 400. He has never just been dominant except for a very short stretch. He just happened to get lucky and play for teams that are winning 100 games a year.

HOF players are top 10 in their position when they play it.

Paps is/was the youngest player in the history of baseball to get to 200 saves and during that stretch you can make a strong argument that he was a top 10 closer of all-time. He was extremely dominant his first couple seasons in Boston. He's still top 10 closer right now. Name 10 better. It starts getting difficult after Kimbrel, Chapman, KRod. Only those three will end up ahead of Papelbon during his playing days and it might just only be KRod. Odds are pretty good he gets at least 350. That's a lot of saves.

He's going to have to do what most players do as they get older- kind of re-invent himself. If he can do that, he can buy himself a few more productive years. He'll probably have to come up with a cutter or something.

Plus, we're only talking about 25-30 saves a year over the next four years. He may not get there, but it's doable.
