Not a great crowd. Least in mullenz tenure. Which is odd.

Did Shump get hurt? He was limping after the first series and didn't return before halftime (I left at half). Also, where was Dillon Day? Didn't see him out there

Only saw Dak for one drive but he scored 2 TDs before I got there. On the drive I saw, he looked extremely sharp. Only had one incompletion on the drive and it was a hell of a pass breakup by Redmond on DeRunnya.
Damian Williams made some good throws too but missed on a couple as well. His passing is about like Dak's at the same stage. Very encouraging.
Fred Brown, F Ross, and S Christy were all very impressive. Big, strong athletes who attack the ball at its highest point. Comfortable in saying that this is our deepest, most talented WR group in MSU history. Not saying much but I am looking forward to seeing these guys in action. Wilson won at least one other jump ball while I was there as well.
Don't remember us running the ball much except for B Holloway. He is a boom or bust back and hopefully won't get many straight handoffs out of the backfield. He is just too small and I thought he was going to get broken in half. Hope we make him a focal point in the return game.
Lots of passing yards in this game, but our DBS made a lot of good plays. There was some great competition between the DBS and WRs.
As for kicking, I think Sobiesk made one and missed one while I was there. The Winston kid made one and missed two from what I saw. We better hope this Walkon freshman is ready to step it up. Only weakness I saw today.
The rest of the team looks like a bonafide, competitive SEC ball club. We have a lot of tall, big bodied players all over the field. Night and day from the Croom years.
Was a very entertaining game and I'm even more fired up for 2014. Need to find a kicker though and that's a scary thought. Could be the difference against LSU, Auburn, etc.

what's surprising? 17,100. I knew it'd be a smaller crowd over 4 months ago.

Robinson is not serviceable at RT. Senior didn't look bad going with the 2's.

Fred Brown was catching everything except one that hit him in the numbers. Our receivers as a whole looked very good.

I was excited to see how calm and poised the QB's were scrambling and in the pocket. Fitzgerald will not be moving to TE.

Holloway seemed to be used in the same manner as Perkins last year.

Field goal kicking is still an adventure

I went to the Jackson State spring game. They had a guy who banged FGs right down the middle from 47, 42, and 37 yards. He never missed.

Not a huge loss with Chappell .. Esp with the way Gabe has come along in the short time he has be moved to slot . This does open the door for Graham to come in as a frosh and compete for reps which is a good thing.. And we may even use Holloway there some now ..
Gabe is going to be a player . Very good athlete and is someone that our staff won't have to worry about issues with on or off the field ..

How did cox and Harris look sat?

mic

Cox is back at his right position.. And with the experience he got at CB last year will for sure be a plus..
Dez Harris will prob be staring next year . And will play a lot this year..
That's why I love CDM signing high school QB's. Big time athletes that get over looked because they play QB in high school but odds are wont play that position in college... I bet if Harris only played LB in high school he would have a 4* highly recruited player
Just like BMac. Myles . And J Banks..

Why? Did you think Mullen was ****ing with the kickers so they couldnt kick?

Mullen wasnt and has never been our problem on ST's. It's personnel whether it's lack of talent or wrong player in the wrong place.

Ron Polk didnt make Pete Young, Rafael Pameiro, or Will Clark a great college hitter- those ****ers could mash long before they got on campus. John Cohen obviously coached Rea when he hit .300+ last year- he damn sure aint coaching him down to hit .230.

Mullen isnt ****ing our kickers up- they just need to make some damn FG's and quit being *****s.

We had better hope that the walk-on from Texas coming in next fall has some balls and takes the job. If our kickers were that bad in the spring game, then they sure as **** aren't going to win us a game in Baton Rouge. There was absolutely no rush on FGs Saturday and they still were shaky as hell.
You would think that there just has to be a kicker somewhere that would want to kick in the damn SEC.

This train of thought is always good for a laugh. Do some people actually think that the special teams coach teaches kicker technique? Kickers, most of the time, get there technical instruction from kicking specialists, camps, film and repetition.

The special teams coach is responsible for kick/punt coverage and return, and personnel.

Jackie Sherrill knows an awful lot about kicking technique. I've heard him talk about it before, and it was quite interesting. I'm sure that there are some special teams coaches that do coach technical instruction. I'm sure that there are some that don't.

We had just as much trouble if not moreso with personnel last year as we did with missed field goals. We had a couple of punts blocked because of missed assignments. We had several bad snaps that resulted in poor kicks or missed field goals. In the past we've given up TD's on kick and punt returns that were very critical. If we clean that up, we will be better.

The bottom line is Dan had too much on his plate last year- and the special teams suffered for it.
