pretty hilarious. but to answer your question, yes, it's very common, that the 1B plays in front of the runner like that if they aren't concerned about holding him on. usually the only time the 1B might play behind him is if it's late in the game and the guy on 1st is a meaningless run, and you're more concerned in guarding against extra base hits, or maybe if there's a guy on 2B and you have an extreme power lefty pull hitter like ortiz up there.

It's strange that it actually happens where a runner can't see. Generally, the runner stays off the 1b's right shoulder by a step or so regardless of how far he gets from the bag under the pretense of a time difference it takes him to apply a tag. A really good fundamental team will have a pickoff from this situation that's lethal with a lefty once they lull you to sleep over there...
