Most people credit Willie Mitchell with being the first pitcher in the South to throw a curveball- which is more than likely what his "Willie Ball" was. The description seems to back that up as well.

And you are correct that he probably didn't get a lot of run support- he pitched in the dead ball era. So, it was not uncommon for pitchers to have really good ERA's and not so great won/loss records.

One thing that you didn't mention was Willie was also the first Mississippian to make it to the Big Leagues.

Ron Polk had him a good one back then.
