I just had the thought of what if as college sports become more powerful as an industry, will there ever be a role similar to GM or a front office like pro sports? With recruiting going the way it is, I think a progressive athletic department could look into this.
Of course I know nothing of rules regarding setting up a front office for college sports.

Saban is a GM. He recruits and makes cuts (medicals).

I guess that's what the athletic director is already, and then they have assistant AD's that manage the sports individually.
I think what you are talking about sounds more like a NFL personnel guy/recruiting coordinator to me. Which I do think we could use in football. We may already have someone that functions as a personnel guy- I think that's what Rockey Felker does, but I know we don't have a full time recruiting coordinator and we really should.
If we don't, I think someone like Glen Young would be a great personnel guy for us. Tyson Lee could be a very good resource now that he is coming back to MSU to work with the FCA. Wayne Madkin might be a good choice. I would like for it to be a former player so that they can relate to the players on the team.
As far as the recruiting coordinator- maybe David Saunders or someone like that. That's where someone like a Brewster really needs to be.

If by GM you mean a recruiting only specialist... Then I think you may be right.
