You don't want Henderson to lead off. He doesn't have enough strike zone discipline to take a lot of pitches and hit with two strikes.

If it were me:

1. Jake Vickerson LF
2. Detz DH
3. Rea 1B
4. Pirtle 2B
5. Humphries 3B
6. Britton SS
7. Gavin Collins C
8. CT CF
9. Demarcus RF

Woodruff
Fitts
Hudson
Bracewell

Start Paul Young on Tuesday.

David Murray said couple days ago the squad has 41 players and 6 must be cut by next week. Any idea on the cuts.

Todd is mostly correct of course, but I would start Robson in left. Lots and I mean lots of platooning the games leading up to Arizona. Weather looks rain free and mild for first weekend!

Hard to guess a Cohen lineup but I'll go..

Bradford
Detz
Rea
Pirtle
Humphreys
Randolph
Henderson/Brown
Britton
Robson/Vickerson

If CT struggles move the Jakes to lead off. I wouldn't be surprised if Detz is leading off before its all said and done.

If it were me:

Vickerson LF
Detz DH
Pirtle 2B
Rea 1B
Humphreys 3B
Briton SS
(No idea- too close to call) C
Bradford CF
Henderson RF

What I think Cohen will probably do:

Robson LF
Detz 3B
Rea 1B
Pirtle 2B
Garner DH
Bradford SS
Henderson RF
Britton SS
Randolph C

I like both lineups, and just because I don't list guys like Hann, Robson, Heck, etc. in my lineup doesn't mean they shouldn't play a big role this year- I expect us to have tremendous depth and use lots of different players in different situations. Also, it wouldn't surprise me at all if CT led off or hit second in the first few games.

Not much fat on the roster. I would have to figure it would be mostly pitchers like Mintz, Hudspeth etc. I don't know any position player that should be cut but I guess someone might have to go.

Looks like about 20 pitchers and 20 position players. How many pitchers does Cohen usually carry.

Guessing a Cohen lineup is like counting cards at a casino, but I just can't see him leading Vickerson off day 1. Who knows though.

Cohen's lineup...

LF Robson
DH Detz
1B Rea
2B Pirtle
C Randolph
CF Bradford
3B Humphreys
SS Britton
RF Hendu

Billingsley and Mintz are walk ons who will RS so subtract two. Hudspeth hasn't done well at all so if he is walk on RS him too.

Rooker and Ingram per Cohen are RS but are they walk ons? I don't know.

Dylan Ingram is 4 for 5 in the last couple scrimmags.

Ms baseball. why is it such a secret about who's a walk on. If you don't know, then who does.

Ms baseball. why is it such a secret about who's a walk on. If you don't know, then who does.

To get more/higher quality walk ons basically...They are treated exactly the same as signees under Cohen. Can tell everyone they signed, etc...We go out of our way to help guys out with that -- and for many, it's a big deal. They aren't faced with the "stigma" of being labeled a walk-on...and that convinces ALOT more/higher quality players to come to MSU and try to earn a scholarship vs the way Polk did it which was have walk-ons basically as outcasts in comparison to "his guys"...

This is why on signing day the school releases nothing and you have to follow me or Gene for news of who signed. Complicated subject. Ingram may be doing well but Rea and Humphreys are 1B for one. We just don't know who is a walk on unless they -the player- says so. Cohen won't say it, why, I don't know. A reporter needs to ask.

MsStateBaseball

This is why Cohen wants really smart guys too, to get aid that way.

I am not big on finding out who the 35 are BC 8 or so won't play at all or little that given year. I concern myself w the 25-28 who will play a lot. But those that are "bumped" to the next year do interest me, Cody Brown and Zach Randolph for instance. I am pretty sure I read where they walked on.

^ This. Cohen will have something out of LF in the lineup, like Pirtle starting at 1B or some shit.

And Deloach II will most definitely be the starter at C.

Surprises me you don't know, because you know the inner workings of the program.

I don't have any inside at all. I wish. I could follow who they recruit. I am around 50 years old and have seen lots of MSU baseball plus I read a ton. I pick up a lot. I am proud of my twitter account. Lots of players, cohen, butch, recruits follow me. I have found most time when a player commits he is already following me, hence I stay positive on twitter.

Baseball is a gamble. Coaches have a pretty good idea who will be drafted and sign. Woody and Rea for example, gone in my opinion. Frees up scholarships. Evan Mitchell could have stayed but they expected him to go pro, frees up money. Same w Norris. They need to go pro to better their game.

I'm hearing that Vance Tatum has been showing out lately- he could be another reliable LHP out of the pen.

ETA: And after looking at Gene's scrimmage report, Tatum was consistently at 87 with his fastball. That's pretty solid to me for a freshman LHP in 30 degree weather.

MsStateBaseball

Lefty's are special. Got to have at least five. Laster is the wild card and another I don't know if he walked on or not. Tatum for sure will pitch this year.

Msstate1, based on your blog it seems you expect ct to pitch a lot more this spring. Can you expound on that? We have a pretty deep staff it seems like, do you think he is a difference maker on the mound? (because he is defensively in cf.)

I keep hoping for an offensive turnaround for c.t. He was great as a freshman.

MsStateBaseball
02-08-2014, 09:42 AM
He is good number one. We need lefties to pitch and we may RS one, Laster to me is not as good as Ct. So that leaves us w 3 lefties w out him. He makes 4. And we have Vick and Robson who are good enough to take his place. CT does bring vast experience in playing CF, angles on balls, etc.

As I have said before, we probably won't "cut" anyone. We'll redshirt six.

As far as baseball scholarships go, they vary for each player from year to year, and the players don't talk about it very much.

It doesn't really matter very much because we probably have a few guys that are academic scholarships that are getting close to a full ride that are athletic scholarship worthy players, but because the NCAA sucks, they are tehnically walk-ons.

As far as this year, the guys that we are looking at redshirting are in no particular order:

Levi Mintz
Jacob Billingsley
Avery Geyer
Ben Hudspeth
Luke Laster
Glenn Irby
Brent Rooker
Dylan Ingram

Two of those obviously will be on the 35 man roster. It might be the two JUCO guys. Ingram is making a case to be on the 35 man roster as well.

Rooker isn't a walk on.
