A source tells @coachingsearch that Mississippi State has put together a multi-year extension and hefty pay raise for DC Geoff Collins.

Damn right. I'm glad we stepped up to the plate on this.

It makes perfect sense. We don't have close games to sweat out now so they decided to give us a coaching situation to stress out. They drug it out long enough that now we can go straight to signing day to stress out over. Well played.

Me & C34 have been telling you guys for a while now not to swear it. But guys kept posting sweat on threads. I'm sure you guys' fingernails are widdled down to nothing!

Then why not make it public till now?

Outstanding to have some confirmation of it, though. I just hope he doesn't pull a Chris Wilson. Remember when everyone thought that Wilson was the best thing since sliced bread in 2011? Then 2012 happened.

I figured it was in the works, but damn good to finally hear something. Whew

Why did they have to? Their timetable is set for what they want to do

Ok. So what are they wanting to do?

But I was under the impression that since we paid him $291,000 last year, that he was going to make $291,000 forever and would run screaming to another school as soon as he had the chance since we disrespected him. This doesn't compute.

recruiting purposes. we have to get better with media relations.

Bonner's blog said that Mullen could not confirm because he was not in Starkville. Isn't it a big recruiting weekend?

Since we pretty well know that we are keeping him, why do you care about all of this?

I do not think this was the best approach to the whole situation. So I simply ask C34 what was/is their plan since it's assumed on this board he knows all.

Nothing is official yet as I type, but I'm glad it looks like we are keeping him. I'm just a big proponent of this being done a lot sooner for several reasons.

The season ended December 31st. It is now January 17th. To me, nitpicking over exactly when during a 2-week time frame it gets done is a little much. And I'm sure they've been working on it pretty much the whole time; it's not like we just sat around for a while and then all the sudden got it all done in a day.

Wrong. Season ended Nov. 28. 50 days and counting to iron this out.

Ok. The bottom line is, they're ironing it out. Isn't that the main thing we want? I mean, holy cow, I think you're going a little nuts on this.

I heard Collins was getting a raise and it would probably be announced around Signing Day. Sounds like they were in no hurry to announce it but had it all worked out and agreed to. Had Collins name not come up in the Fla State search- there would have been no reason to announce it before Signing Day- and even if they had already announced it- he would still be interested in the Fla State job. It's a premier job.

But it also makes perfect sense for him to stay because he will have a badass defense next year and should get alot of buzz

More bang for the buck for 7-6 team. Oh, did you hear...MSU has a great DC who the national champion FSU wanted but he stayed at State.

Sounds Pretty good right?

DL coaches should NEVER be DCs. Ever! Every staff especially in the SEC needs a full time DL coach or you have a situation where great talent is uncoached and wasted. Whereas a lb or safeties coach is a better fit to split roles as a DC & position coach

I think everyone just wants MSU to be a FSU/Texas type of job so that the FSU/Texas of the world will stop trying to steal our coaches. I like Collins but lets not get carried away here with him. The players we've signed, developed and put on the field are the biggest reason for our defense getting noticed and schools like FSU wanting him. The entire staff and most importantly Dan Mullen all got those players and all developed them. If we do lose Collins at some point the next guy will step up and our train will keep going forward. It's not like Collins has some magical playbook that only he has access to. If we start paying $800k+ to our DC/OC just know that we will also be paying $4mm+ to our HC. I want some top 20 wins and to stop finishing below LSU, Bama, aTm before we start paying equal salaries as them first. That's not an unrealistic expectation for MSU to ask. If they want to be paid like the big boys they need to beat the big boys.

I'm buying this. Sometimes y'all act like you know too much. We're the talks ongoing since before the bowl game? Absolutely. If it was truly ironed out and a done deal it makes no sense to hold off on announcing it. It obviously only got finalized recently as his stock rose and more teams became interested.

Fletcher Cox had a lot to do with that.
