So apparently some UM fans are under the impression that the long-time SEC referee Doug Shows was a former student/player for Mississippi State. They claim that he "cheated" UM out of a win earlier today and shouldn't have been allowed to officiate the game.

Now, this would be an understandable reaction after learning about a former player refereeing a game involving their former team, but there's one problem- Doug Shows did not graduate from Mississippi State. He graduated from USM. (https://www.heritagefirstbank.com/home/fiFiles/static/documents/DougShowsPR_NOV2013.pdf) Per this article, both of his degrees are from Southern Miss.

In the mind of a UM fan, they simply are incapable of losing to the rednecks at "Moo U"- there has to be another explanation, even if they have to totally make one up out of thin air. This latest episode is just another fine example.

Doug Shows is a primadonna idiot and just loves being the center of the universe when on the court. Him and Stans had NO LOVE for each other.
I saw no favoritism shown today, just GQ being GQ (yes some of the other refs do call him that).

Hell, he's the one who kept them in it early in the second half with two back to back chintzy calls in their favor against Roq and Ware.
They're just pissed they didn't get a call on their last possession in the paint and their was no foul, just good position and good no call.

Not that this changes your point, but both of his parents did go to State. His dad played basketball at State.

they've had a lot of practice in coming up with causes as to why they lose to us.

And yet even with all that practice they still can't get the right reason: we are just far superior than them in every sport. Period. End of story.

So, I guess they were OK with Dick Pace calling the Egg Bowl in 1981?

Dick Pace's last known record is in Maitland, FL near Orlando. He would be 85 years old.

Speaking of 80s injustices - The Wind Bowl. Can you imagine Hugh Freeze's response of that happened to us again. He'd probably call himself Moses.

That is utter bullshit. Shows is a good official and he did not dislike Stans or MSU. I will guarantee you he will make the call he thinks is right and is not intimidated by anybody. And yes he finished at USM. Some of you folks are as bad as the UM supporters.

Hopefully he is having to watch MSU WR's score touchdowns while he can't get his flag out.

Dick Pace cheating is not the only thing that makes his cheating so bad, it was the fact he cost us an important Egg Bowl.

We won the 1980 Egg Bowl 19-14 and went on to the Sun Bowl
Dick "cheating mf'er" Pace flat out cheats and calls pass interference on us with the OM WR climbing on top of our DB's back as he makes the pick. Costing us the 1981 Egg Bowl. (College PI was a spot foul in 1981)
We won the 1982 easily 27-10
Then you had the ****ing win blow down our winning FG in 1983

We should have won 4 straight EB's and not have had to wait 30 more years

Doug Shows, love him or hate him, is one of the most recognizable refs (next to Ted Valentine) in not just the SEC, but the nation since John Clougherty and Don Rutledge retired. And he has obviously graded well, because he has worked numerous Final Fours, including a Championship game or two. These don't happen by chance, but they don't also mean he's perfect. He blew some calls, as will all refs. Fact is, State was the aggressor, got to the rack and forced the whistle to be blown. Kudos to Ray and staff for sticking with the game plan (mostly) because they knew a heavy dose of zone was coming. Yet Sword was able to break them down all day long. Plus our aggressiveness on D, created transition opportunities.

Good lord, if we make 75% of our FT's and hit a few more 3's its a blowout, but we are thin in the talent dept., and just have to grind. That's why these wins over Kennedy's boys are so sweet. Damn shame Lewis, Steele and Applewhite put selfish endeavors ahead of this program - but we'll be better for it.

Good point about being the aggressor and attacking the zone the way we did. That's why so many of us talk about being better coached under Ray on the floor- we never did any of this in our zone offense under Stands- it was always fire away from 3.

For a team that cant shoot- we do a great job of attacking the basket and also beating the defense back for some easy baskets. It's also good that Borchert is the only player we lose off this team for next year. Still a young basketball team
