I can't believe they hired him back with his track record and him already leaving them once.

He goes there and he keeps winning for 3-4 years at a level at least as high as Strong did. Virtually guaranteed success at a high level is worth a lot.

Would you date a Katherine Webb if you knew she might dump you an a few years?

Great hire.

He's going to ride that Charlie Strong talent to 1 or 2 great years then he's headed to Florida or similar. UL administration needs to realize this and do something to make sure good players are brought in during those two years. Petrino's downside is that he doesn't leave a lot of talent behind, because he didn't need it himself.

I agree. I think he'll use them as a stepping stone again. He's gotten a taste of the SEC and it's hard to get rid of that.

He left them in great shape last time! Seems like a smart hire!

Yeeeeah, not exactly.

It's all in how you look at it. Petrino is not going to recruit well, so in that regard, he is not going to leave a bunch of great players to work with. But he is going to get results out of the guys he does bring in, and inspire confidence. And when he leaves, your job is seen as one where people can win.

And when he leaves, your job is seen as one where people can win.

Louisville is already seen this way, though, especially now moving to the ACC.

The bottom line is, he's left every program he's ever coached in shambles and usually left them under questionable or embarrassing circumstances. Why the heck would you want to hire that guy?

You can be pretty positive he a) won't be there in 5 years; b) will leave a very difficult job for whoever you hire to replace him; and c) will hurt the reputation of your school at some point along the way. Yay!

Awesome! Time will be just right for him to take over here after Mullen goes to a Top 5 school in 3-4 years.**

Yep, he really hurt Louisville. He only went 41-9, won 2 conference titles and won a BCS game in much tougher Big East. It's not like Kragthorpe was a bad name when they hired him either.

And Arkansas sure is reeling because of him. I tell you, that shot to their 'reputation' just buried them. Not to mention that he waaaay exceeded the typical potential at Arkansas, during the toughest SEC known in history. His tenure there was the aberration, not right now. Arkansas is right where they are supposed during the Nutt years, a 6-6 team with 8-4 every now and again. Really no better than Ole Miss or MSU.

Any statement on what they're paying him?

As the metaphor relates to Petrino, keep in mind that when she dumps you you'll be broke, no possessions, and have a STD. But, of course, while you were with her it was obviously the most exhilarating time of your life with unbelievable sex.

Interesting that two sun belt coaches have been hired for other jobs yet one particular SBC coach hasn't left their school yet. LSU OL coach has been let go that could be interesting

I didn't say Petrino didn't win when he was there. But in the 5 years before Petrino, Louisville never won fewer than 7 games, and they won 9+ twice in the 3 years before he was hired, winning C-USA both years. Then Petrino came in and had a lot of success; won CUSA once out of two years and did the same when they moved up to the Big East. He was there 4 years, and they won the conference twice.

Then, immediately following Petrino, they won fewer than 7 games all 3 years, didn't make a bowl in any of the 3 years, and fell to worse depths than they'd seen in years. They made a great hire in Strong, and he won 7 his first two years.

So after Petrino, it took them 6 years to get back to at least 8 wins, which is where they had been 2/3 years before he got there. He won the conference 2/4 years; John L Smith won it twice out of his last 3 before Petrino, and once Strong came in, he won it twice out of the 4 years he was there. So it looks to me like Louisville is just a really good program, except for the period immediately following Petrino. He had great success while he was there and left a pile of crap for Kragthorpe.

And yes, Arkansas is reeling. How are they back to being a 6-6 team who jumps to 8-4 ever now and again? First, they were better than that under Nutt...won 6 or fewer only 3 out of his 10 years and won 8+ 6 out of his 10 years; so more often than not, they were a 8-10 win team under Nutt. And they certainly are not back to that. They've gone 4-8 and 3-9 in the two years following Petrino...or two years worse than anything that happened under Nutt.

Yes, Petrino had a lot of success while he was there; but his history proves he will leave your program in shambles.
