I don't know about y'all, but I'd love to have a guy named Bacon on our team.

Texas Rangers once had a second base-shortstop combo named Shave(MSU guy) and Cologne.

in 1964/66 we had a Bacon playing baseball, Bill Bacon, played on 1965 sec championship team with Del Unser and Bobby Bragan, Jr., Russ Gatlin, Claude Passau Jr., Mike Burns, and many more I can't seem to recall, all under Paul Gregory.

Darryl you bring up a lot of interesting names. Del Unser played for many years in the bigs and was an executive for years with the Philles. Bobby Bragan Jr.was the son of Bobby who played in the bigs and was later president of the Texas league. Bobby's brother Jimmy played at State and coached State for one year. The year before Polk came to State and Jimmy was also president of the Southern league. And then Claude Passeau jr was the son of Chicago Cubs pitching star Claude Passeau. Passeau gave up the most famous home run in allstar game history. Walk off homerun to Ted Williams in the 1941 game.

State really does have a very interesting baseball history. Too bad more people don't know about it.

Yep, Jon Shave. He was almost killed one year in spring training with the rangers. Was going after a popup and collided with another player and had severe damage to his throat and windpipe. Really was never the same after that.

Anybody know what Jon Shave is doing these days.

Nope, but Shave, Cohen, Young, Masters, Reed, etc all lived in MacArthur with us lonely football players. Great times with some great guys!!!

We can't have a guy named bacon on the team. Cohen is a Jewish name. (meant no disrespect was just being goofy).

Russ Gatlin won the sec batting championship in 1965-Mike Burns, who passed away a few years back, has an award named after him given each year to the baseball player who exemplyfies a team player, one who puts his team and mates first. Frank Chambers, who's father was a football player at State, was a pitcher. Claude Reeder was a pitcher. Ken Tatum was a pitcher. Had a left hand pitcher from Lake Village Ak. whose last name was Jabo but we called him Yarddog. He is now an Attorney in Little Rock after serving many years as District Attorney in Little Rock. I could go on and on as I had many of the 1965/66 team members in my dorm when they were Freshman. I was dorm counceler for Freeman Hall. I think if not mistaken Tommy Neville was a catcher on that team. I think Aubrey Nichols may have also pitched on that team.

Ken Tatum had a great rookie year in 1969. He was one of the best young pitchers in the game until he rearranged Paul Blair's face (accidentally) in 1970. Was never the same after that.
