Why do some want not to talk about crowds? Some act as if we should be ashamed even mentioning crowd sizes and crowd records. It is something to be extremely proud of because NOBODY else in college baseball can boast about their crowd sizes without pointing to MSU.

It's usually the same people who want to defund baseball. It was a little cringy when we had never won a Natty, but ultimately it does speak to the health and support of the program. Also, there are a lot of football and basketball people who are extremely jealous of continued baseball success. So they try to piss on anything baseball rrelatrd.

The same people that show up 12k strong to a Tuesday baseball game in March are the same people who are unable to get off their ass to come to a basketball game against a top 10 Auburn team on a Wednesday night or come to a SEC home football game.
The problem is that the fan base as a whole would rather be good in baseball than be good in a sport that helps the university. We are the equivalent of the University of North Dakota and their hockey program, but please continue pounding your chest.

Here is the bottom line if we start winning in football they will come. If we start winning in Basketball they will come. for those of us who have to drive 4+ hours to games one way it's a little hard to get excited and for many the cost of seeing a loser team play the motivation is not there. When I lived in Starkville, I supported all teams win or lose but now that i moved away it's not the cost but time involved that keeps me home watching on ESPN.

Yeah, it isn't a thing that someone is really choosing to support baseball at the expense of basketball. Baseball has earned support by being more than competitive. Outside of about 3 years in the 90s and a bunch of years in the 50-60s, we have just been about mediocre in basketball. Combine that with some bad basketball that isn't as fun to watch and it is a tough sell.
I love going to the Hump when it is rocking but we haven't had exciting basketball in a while.
Combine that with games on TV and it doesn't help.

Yeah this is pretty much the problem. Our fans expect win first, support second when the successful programs are the exact opposite- including Ole Miss.
Incredible support even for bad teams attracts recruits and increases money in the program. Mullen was huge on this concept and he was correct. When a recruit coming for a visit to a football game and sees 30,000 Tennessee fans in our stadium it hurts our perception, and perception IS reality. Ole Miss gets this and we don't. That's why they were 2 plays away from a national championship appearance, and we were 5-8 getting our ass kicked by Wake Forest in the Duke's Mayo Bowl.

it would also help if one of the times the hump is packed for a big game that we actually won. we tend to shit the bed in basketball specifically, whenever its a big time moment or game that the support IS there for. i was in school in the mid 00s and the hump was the most fun place to be when it was rocking and we were good. as you said, if i'm going to take the time to make the trip i don't want to be pissed the whole way back home. spring is my busiest time of year with my job and my kids playing sports...but i try my best to make time to attend/watch as many games as possible. one reason is because my whole life has been about baseball...secondly, we always...even the last few years...have had big moments and can really compete with anyone.

I disagree. You have to have some support but a sold out stadium doesn't come before winning. OM didn't do it either.
I don't know of one program in anything where sellouts happen before a program starts winning at any level. When you win, fans come. No fans want to be spending time and money on a loser. Plain and simple. The Chicago Bulls had no fans until Jordan and they started winning. Dallas has huge fan support but it don't make them win a SB. Indiana football, UK basketball, etc. I could go on for days with examples.
Real simple, win and people come. That is why MSU baseball has attendance records. Ironically, it is also because MSU has been desperate for a winner. Bad Football and basketball is actually part responsible for baseball being what it is at MSU. Why Vic turned WBB into what it was too. Purcell start winning like that Hump will be full again.

One thing Mississippi Rebel fans do better than us is help their guys recruit. They will come from all over to stay in Oxford for the weekend and pretend its a fun place while its a big recruiting weekend. Just like the ol Cheby Chase Funny Farm movie

There are other examples contradicting yours as well.
South Carolina football consistently sells out.
Gonzaga basketball built where they are from fan support.
The Chicago Cubs didn't win a World Series for something like 80 years.
It starts with fan support.
Also the Cowboys are somewhat of a special case. The person in charge actively undercuts them.
MSU baseball is is 697-647 in conference in the last 50 years. .518 winning percentage.

Yeah. I think this idea of show up first and success happens started with Dan I think and I always thought it was kind of backwards.
Look at Indiana football and their crowd during Cignetti's first game.
It was worse than whatever our worst attended game was.
Baseball gets it. It's a really good product with a really good coach and coaching staff.
Football does things to alienate our fans- like the interlocking MSU logo being owned by Nike lie and looking like buffoons when we can't get a tackle eligible while Ole Miss gets an Ole Miss judge to get their QB an extra year he shouldn't have.

South Carolina don't win either. Cubs you just made my point - always had great fans, venue but they didn't win big. There are exceptions to every rule and fans showing up before winning is the exception not the rule. 90/10 rule is win and they will come. MSU SEC conf record means nothing - we been to post season most every year in that 50 year period.

This is it. You nailed it.
And imagine thinking that our baseball success somehow take away from basketball and football! Hahahah
And also imagine going through life as a State fan and hating baseball. What a shitty sports life.
