Let's go ahead and get this out of the way. It's still too early to pay attention to RPI. But we're going to do it anyway!
After playing RPI killer Jackson State we have gone from RPI 17 to RPI 15. Which just really shows how volatile RPI really is. Also, it goes to show you that it's only a RPI killer IF you lose.
Last week my projection was 17 SEC wins and win over USM in Starkville and the Governor's Cup gets us a host and 19 SEC wins puts us in National Seed discussion.
We now have 1 SEC win- but hey you gotta start somewhere. So, we need 16 more to get there. And I won't lie- I was a little disappointed that we didn't win the series against Arkansas. We were pretty close. But close only counts in horseshoes, hand grenades, and maybe curling. If we can figure out our bullpen roles we can start pressing the right buttons more and our defense needs to step up. I think Milewski coming back will help that a lot. Also, doubleheaders make things a little weird. The fact of the matter is we went to Arkansas and at least did what we needed to do- even though it's still a little disappointing.
But now it's time to move forward and I am hoping that we play a lot better against Vanderbilt in Starkville. And I think we will. Vandy has had a lot of pitching injuries this year and it has caused them to struggle. That said, the thing that worries me about Vanderbilt is they hit a lot of home runs and we tend to give those up unfortunately. Also, this is Vanderbilt's first true road game of the year so it will be a new experience for them. I'm hoping that we can at least get a minimum of 2 wins at home.
So, I think it's a big series for us. Let's hope this turns out just as good as the 2021 CWS Championship Round.
