- Steals Per Game....Miss. State #13 SEC
- Forced Turnovers Per Game...Miss. State #12 SEC
- Scoring Defense...Miss. State #12 SEC
- Opponents Turnovers Per Game...Miss. State #312 NCAA D1

I posted these stats in another thread. but am.posting again. Also, I'm posting again about this junior college point guard that I ran across from California named Ebele Mbagwu whom I believe could really help this Miss. State women's basketball program. Coach Purcell needs to possibly get out to California and take a look at this player. She currently leads the nation (#1 njcaa d1) in steals. I watched some video on her and was really impressed at the quickness of her hands defensively. It appears natural instincts for steals, loose balls, ect. Also a crafty scorer off the dribble and passer. She plays for Miles Community College out in California.

We have similarly bad stats on forcing turnovers on the men's BB side as well. We are apparently at the very bottom of D1 in that stat. THAT is where we desperately miss Cam Matthews.

Think team while recruiting,. Though talent is important...not just bring in a group of talented players. Important to have that glue guy defensively. A big thing with Matthews was that he was a tweener, a hybrid type defender with a solid talent level that anchored the froncourt as much as the perimeter defensively. Good rebounder as well. Tough player since his freshman season onwards. Huge loss. Effects of his loss still being felt.

Looking at film of Andrea Flores and Daniel Boone HS a couple of things to notice is (1) Flores plays the point for them, does a good job and (2) They have another really good player on the team that Miss. State had been looking at named Aaliyah Story. Story is a bit thin but long, very athletic, and listed as a 6-3 power forwad that ultimate signed with Tennessee Chattanooga back in November. She's a really good defensive player, shot blocker, and rebounder. Looks like SEC frontcourt talent. Miss. State would have done well to have added both she and Flores to it's 2026 signing class. I see her as currently being this underrated Cam Matthews type that goes hard and really brings it on defense and rebounding. These type players can make a huge difference on teams even as freshmen. Right now the best defensive player on the team and only true rim protector in that Miss State froncourt is wing Madison Francis. Other than Francis team normally exhibits limited ability defending at the rim, especially in SEC play.

Sam has never really been a defensive coach or apparently had a asst. that is great at it. I've always been disappointed in our rotations and help awareness since he took over.

Saw everyone except Faith Wylder in the team photo with Carolyn Peck before the South Carolina game. She's not listed on the official roster as well. Last I heard she and Chandler Prater were both listed as unavailable for that first Tennsess game. Prater has since returned. Keep working with Jimenez, suggest continuing giving her spot minutes as needed coming down the stretch. Big keys with her is getting good player development coaching and her getting the fundamentals down to where she can consistently execute these things, much repetition..be like a sponge. It takes some post players somewhat longer to get going on the college level, especially when starting off with injuries. Can't teach 6-7, also she came in with a good talent level including experience as the youngest member of the FIBA Domican Republic National Team, potential is there.

I see these defensivei issues as well and it's been really affecting 3 point defense the most...all season. Dribble drive defense has been bad as well. I've made several posts recently that Coach Purcell should go out to California and take look at this juinor college guard. Ideally need atleast 2 good (incuding game ready) point guards on the roster at all times.
