A key thing that I have noticed regarding these last 3 games that Miss. State has lost is that they have gotten out hustled, out efforted in all three. Also, the opposing team is normally the aggressor in these games. They attack Miss. State while Miss. State mostly stays on it's heels. It's as if Miss. State is a prey. Miss. State could benefit from going to a hunter type mentality. Come out of the gates on the attack defensively, maxmum effort, pressure, trap, quickness, ect. Not just sitting back as these top 25 teams attack you. Defend in bounds play, everything..and when they do attack you defensively take care of the ball and make the right reads. Go hard 4 quarters (including energy level). One of the key things that Coach Schaefer built around while at Miss. State was tremendous effort for 4 quarters. Remember him indicating how they went all out in practice and played the same way they practiced. During that time period Miss. State went way harder in games than any team in the SEC. Teams couldn't match the effort of Schaefer's teams at Miss State. South Carolina was able to out talent them back then at times but not effort.
Coach Purcell needs to get the team on pressure and attack mode for 4 quarters. Go all out and if 1 guard gets too tired bring in another. Also, Coach Purcell indicated today that they are expecting to have the guard from France (Melissa Guillet) available within the next couple of weeks so plenty of guards to play aggressive with. Also, take care of the ball, win these rebounding battles, loose balls, play smart. Recently watched an old video of that 2004 NCAA Tourney with Mike Anderson's UAB team knocking off #1 seed Kentucky..That was a good example of a so-called out matched team bringing tremendous effort, seemingly madness type effort to win that game. UAB was down early..UAB came back, down again...UAB came back. Kentucky took the lead late...UAB came back. Nothing Kentucky could do to shake this team. Players people hadn't heard of...players like the Ronnell and Donnell Taylor twins. Squeaky Johnson, ect. Purcell needs to show his team and coaches these type videos. https://youtu.be/7w1LugK1b4c?si=pFKB0xbprgsu86G1

jdelta I'm glad you post alot on our girls and I love to watch them just as much as you do but they aren't good. We have the potential to be good next year if we can keep a few of our talented girls and hit the portal hard but this roster this year has alot of holes in it.

What blows my mind in today’s basketball games men or women is nobody appears to coach/teach blocking out under the goal. I played a lot of basketball growing up. In high school I was 6’3” I usually played the 3 or 4 spot. I was taught at an early age how to block out. I played against a lot of players that could jump way higher than me and were way taller than me. But because I learned how to block out I got a lot of rebounds without fouling.

I agree that they have potential to be good, really good next season. Also, agree that they currently have holes that need addressing, glaring holes. I disagree on giving up on the season and an ncaa tourney bid but the coaching staff will need to some how get this team to going on a different level, get much more consistency, will need to max out the.team's potential. They still have several good wins on their ncaa resume just need to continue o get better and continue to add to those.

As of now Miss. State women are still projected in the NCAA Tourney but will need to soon start kocking off some more of these SEC teams. Take advantage of these home opportunities.

I didn't say we weren't making the tournament so I'm not sure who you are disagreeing with there. But since you brought it up, as we sit right now we don't deserve to be in, we haven't beaten enough good teams and have been blown out a few times. Our next 6 games are #5 Vandy, #7 Kentucky, #21 Bama, #20 Tennesse, Missouri, #2 South Carolina..... Yes we have plenty of time to get some good wins and make it but who are we beating in this next 6 game stretch other than possibly Missou? I'd love to win them all but I'm watching the same games you are and the way we are playing right now, we can easily go 0-6 during this next stretch.

I'm using good and making ncaa tourney in the same context. With this SEC schedule Miss. State will need to be good to get the needed wins out of it. Based on what I have seen as well this team doesn't appear to have enough to get the job done unless they step up to a good bit higher level than what we have seen. I suggested in an earlier post in this thread that they make a fundamental change in their approach to the game defensively. Suggested go with a major mid-season adjustment in order to help salvage the season. Go with constant stifling defensive pressure from.the opening tip until the final buzzer sounds. Don't let these teams get comfortable on offense even in half court and take better care of the ball against pressure when they come at you. The way things are currently headed against this tough SEC schedule doesn't appear will end well for post season aspirations but still gotta keep fighting. Always possible to turn this thing.
Over half of these SEC teams got way, way, WAY better during the off-season. Appears the deepest the SEC women's basketball conf has ever been.

Seriously? We did blocking out drills when I played in 80s. Charging drills too. It was rougher than football. Hard floor, brick wall etc. One day had a guy go thru a sheet rock wall going after ball.
Today players just want to stand around and make the glamorous play and jack 3s.

you are onto something there and it's just hard for a true basketball purist to watch.

Purcell is always going to have them decent, but I don't believe they will ever truly compete under him. He is a safe bet but not a good bet.

Good win over then #7 Kentucky.
Also, France transfer Melissa Guillet has made it. Coach Purcell indicated that she immediately upon arrival scored 12 points in practice and they will use this week to get her familiar/adjusted to the playbook. Appears good defensive player.

Miss. State women's basketball team comes in at #24 in Talia Goodman's Top 25.
Keep playing aggressive (don't take foot off the gas pedal), taking the fight to the opponent and this team will be hard to beat. Still feel that this team needs to be even more agressive, and not letting up. They continue to let up and that combined with turnovers has been a reoccurring factor in getting this team beat in the past. Though, this game they did do a very good job responding against Kentucky's comeback attempts, ultimately extending the lead back out and holding. Team just recently added the France transfer Melissa Guillet so they have enought guards to stay aggressive on defense. Also, Madison Francis at 6-2 with her athleticism defending on the perimeter is huge. The lineup with Francis on the wing appears to be working. Big key is not to let these teams get comfortable on offense, running sets, ect.. Also, take care of the ball, win these rebounding battles.
Huge game for K. Richardson, just need her to stay more consistent from.game to game. She and Nwaedozi outplayed Kentucky's bigs. (Note) Kentucky with Strack and company has one of the best front courts in the NCAA Division 1 this season. Also, they were dominant against LSU.
Additional Note
As of 1/20/26 ESPN has Miss. State listed as a 9 seed in the 2026 NCAA Women's Basketball Tourney
