That is awesome! I always thought the Famous Maroon Band was/is great. I was a band parent with my son in high school. They spend a lot of practice time.

Our band is top notch despite some that think they are not that good.

See the article on HailState.com. Highest award that a college band can earn and can only be given once. Is given for the history of the band, not just for the year.

There are many excellent, historical college band programs in the United States who have not won this award. It's great and is only given every other year now, so there are only half of the opportunities to win that there used to be.

An impressive accomplishment, especially for a school better known for engineering than fine arts. Have come a long way since I was a member some sixty years ago. Thanks to Peyton Crowder, Kent Sills, Warren Lutz and others for laying the groundwork many years ago.

Very proud moment for the Famous Maroon Band!

My dream was to go to Mississippi State for four years. My parents told me they didn't have enough money for me to go to MSU all four years- our house was destroyed when I was a young child and my tuition went to rebuilding our house.

So, when I was in high school I worked really hard, made good grades....and got a scholarship to MSU! Problem was I didn't have quite enough money to pay for everything. Being in the band never occurred to me until I went to high school day at MSU. Our band director took some of us to USM to watch them practice and they were at that time very serious about band. Too serious IMO. Like people were doing push ups for being late to band practice, people hiding the music of people that put their music in the wrong place making them late and then calling them out for it, and etc. So, it wasn't for me because I was never THAT serious about band. So, I told my MSU friends about my situation with my scholarship and my USM experience and they were like "we're not like that, we just want to have a good time, band camp is the worst part and it's a week and it's over."

So, they talked me into trying out and Mrs. Lance and I hit it off really well and she called me into her office and I told her my situation and she goes, "Well, I think we can help you out". And I got enough after that to pay for the rest- I really didn't need that much thankfully because band scholarships are not exactly something I would use solely to pay for college LOL. I was planning on working somewhere or doing something to make the money I needed but I didn't have to.

And that's how I got to achieve my dream of going to MSU for four years and it was all paid for. I had no idea until midway through my senior year that band would be part of that dream but it was. So, I'm very thankful for the Famous Maroon Band.

I was there when we beat the Gene in 1996 I was on the field when the parachute guy hit the field, I was there for the SEC Championship- I'm actually on the video that they show on the scoreboard if you squint really hard for one second when we beat Ole Miss in 1998 to go to the SEC Championship Game, I was on the field for the SEC Championship Game and then the 1999 season was very special to say the least.

And that's my Tom Rinaldi story.

they not taking the whole band to the mayo bowl

If I had to guess that is likely the Mayo Bowl's decision.

One I disagree with.
