Expecting more good news today
Tennessee is still pretty confident about White and Albert but I know that confidence has really waned in the last 72 hours. Our staff has put the blitz on for both of those guys. I have said all along that I thought White would end up at State, I wavered a bit in October on that but still have been cautiously optimistic. I have always believed that Dareon Albert wanted to go out of state, but he would be a massive pull for Lebby and Co. I mean just the fact that we are in it this late with them tells you how good of a recruiter Lebby and Hutzler both are. The fact that we were 5-7 and barely had a top 50 class 7 days ago and now we are on the precipice of a top 15 class is amazing.
Cotton is in. There were some fans out there worried about him since Alabama was sniffing.
He?s listed as a TE. I don?t know how fast he is, but I wouldn?t pigeon hole him as a TE yet. I can remember when Chris Bell got pigeon holed as a TE coming out of Greeneville a few years ago.

Zayion Cotton is in. Huge hold for the staff. Bama and OM both were on him. I think Bama was trying to get him to hold off committing anywhere.
I think he's a posession WR at the next level. He reminds me a little of De'Runnya if he had played football before his senior year of HS.
StarkVegasSteve

Hearing positive stuff on Keymian Henderson, WR out of Carthage, TX. I think we're going to win that battle. Kind of came on late and really stole him from under TCU's nose.
But hey, he still gets to play for Kendall next year..........
Jaedon Hill is in. I will never understand how he?s not a 4 star.
Looks like we are getting good news on Micah Nickerson.

Great stuff guys. Keep em coming.
No offense to Evans, Thompson, or Coleman last year, but I like getting these bigger WRs that can also run.
Cotton is a 6?5? target. Henderson is a 6?4? target. Shepherd from last years class is 6?4?.
It will be nice to have a big target on those dep choice routes in this offense.

Cotton could be a guy that can play a big slot role, and you can look like both 11 personnel and 12 personnel with him. I like the TE Hutchinson as well.

And I get that, but if 24/27 (no idea on this exact number) are less than 4 star, seems the chances of you being wrong are more than them being wrong.
I honestly don't know the correct path in this new era, but anyone that needs developing seems risky. If they don't play right away, they'll leave, and that money was wasted.

I think the issue has been the fact that the bamas of the world could horde the players. Now they have to live with less talent, meaning not as deep. That's why we are seeing all teams beatable. So while we will remain in that top 30 from JUCO/HS, we have to live in the top 15 in portal finds.
This gives MSU a ready and a steady team. The era of every 4 to 5 years if we play our cards right (train up some younger players while having a sr vet team) is truly over.

We're usually a top 30 team in America until leach died and things went to hell.
Even when not ranked in top 30 due to losses from a tough schedule, we are usually a top 30 team. Cringe at least.
Heck we are probably top 35 now. The analytics, per Parker Fleming, say the "average" team would have less than 5 wins against our schedule. So we're above average at least.

It's bragging rights, and that counts for something as far as I'm concerned. More importantly, if our average player (88 for example) is better than theirs, that really means something. In other words I don't want to move up just because we signed more than others, I want to move up because we legit got better players!

That's correct and I imagine there's going to be a few turned away today as we signed some flips so it will even out. But once Ole Miss gets credit for their full 25 compared to us, more than likely they will pass us. Again, that's fine, it will be really close, it's a win for us after the seasons we've had. But I wouldn't go out and start bragging about this to your Ole Miss neighbor until BOTH signing days are complete!

Noboy is comparing our class to them. Posters are comparing our class to Ole Miss but that's a trap I encourage people not to fall into because it can easily be thrown back in our faces. Again, I'm happy with the class, it's fine.
Who the 17 cares? Jesus, y'all are going to 17 up another thread arguing over stupid points that don't matter. We have had a pretty decent day getting bodies that we need and pulling a few we didn't expect. Staff has worked hard for this and we need players no matter where they come from. If they can play the will make it if not they will get processed, that's the game now. We have more $$ than we ever have lets watch this shake out.

We are 100% upgrading needs.
Here?s the thing. After 2023, it was going to be a massive process to rebuild the program. We were low on talent. The culture had gone down. We didn?t have even a skeleton of an in house NIL structure.
Some want to skip steps in the process. I get it.
Jeff Lebby walked into an untenable situation. There wasn?t a coach available to us that would have come in and immediately start flipping 4 and 5 star recruits.
However, Jeff came in a damn near flipped a couple. Daniel Hill being one. He closed strong with MVB, Craver, and Stonka that year. Some didn?t pan out. The others transferred out.
Year two, he closed even stronger. He got Tyler Lockhart. He kept Kamario Taylor. He added Ferzell Shepherd.
He has closed strong again. We just missed out on flipping a couple more.
It may not be fast enough for some, but Jeff Lebby knows what he is doing. He?s got the financial backing now. Hit the portal hard. Win 8 next season. We might be at that point where we are actually getting more and more higher rated recruits.

I'm glad we seem to be trending better, moving up in the rankings, but is it fools gold? We have a 5 star (awesome) but one 4 star? Everything else is just 3 stars. I mean even South Carolina has nine 4 stars. Point being, our average player signed, 95% of the class, is (ranking wise) just that, average.
You know the drill, sign with MSU lose a star. The difference in 3 star and 4 star is a hair anyway. No worries.

With us picking up so many recruits today.. did we take a big chunk out of the money for the transfer portal? Is there money dedicated just for high school recruiting? After reading some posts about high school recruiting it got me to thinking. Maybe some of the posters are right on getting so many guys you have to develop. We need bodies, ones that can play at every position. This looks like a roster flip, if we are bringing in 20 plus from the portal that’s nearly 50 new players. Bring them in, if they can get it done keep them if not you have to process them. It’s a shitty business but it’s the way things are now.

Because there are only so many sure fire players out there and none of them are going anywhere to sit on the bench. Talent is spread out because players don't want to ride the pine. That bottom 3rd of the roster you have to throw as much sh*t against the wall as you can and hope to get lucky. All of them are basically the same players pedigree wise.

The flips turned our ranking around, but 15 of these signees are ranked .86 or .85 with one OL even being ranked a .84, (and many having very questionable offer sheets, but maybe a few diamonds in the rough will develop). We are still far below most of the other teams in the SEC. On the other side of the coin we were one of the very few teams to give a kicker a full ride. He is rated a .81, but a five star as a kicker and a 4 star as a punter on the kickers only rating site, but still pulls down your ranking per player. We must continue to improve on our recruiting cla$$e$, both HS/JC and the portal to move up in our talent level in the SEC..

Because evaluators don't know how to properly evaluate kickers. The only people that do are the kicking evaluators. Kohl's is the best at that and has Chambers rated as the 8th best kicker in the class.

I would use the 85 man roster every year. Recruit at a higher lvl, and be transparent about my intentions. All true freshman would be scout team. (There could be exceptions to that rule) Regardless, until the portal is controlled, you can lose starters and second and third teamers annually. Easy come, easy go?..wash, rinse, and repeat! I would not waste money/time on an extra 20 heads.

The thing im not clear on is schools have to spend the 20.5 million right. And funding full scholarships counts 2.5 toward that 20.5. So maybe it?s better for the AD budget to fully fund scholarships. Otherwise, I would have no more than 85 on scholarship. And I would probably only have 50 earning scholarships + rev share. Then maybe 25 of that 50 earning scholarship+rev+nil. This is off the top of my head but you guys know what im saying. Focus our dollars on the starting units, key positions, and do the best we can on depth.

Most teams only pay about 45-50 any significant amount. The rest are limited NIL guys with as much upside as you can find. The more you got, the more likely you can find a few you like.
Even a limited NIL deal can be a better deal than a lot of places.

South Carolina seems to be updating the model...only sign about 15 hs guys, and spend a lot of money on them. Then spend the rest of your cash on the portal. Don't waste money on the backend 10-15 hs recruits who will likely never crack your 2-deep
This is what makes the most sense to me by far. Your class ranking won't be great but who cares? Do what's best for your program not one day of crootin' bragging.
Former commit that signed with USC Stephen Miller is in the portal.
How are we feeling this morning about Darby, Cooley, and Mathew?s?

I don't feel great about any of them, but I guess if you told me one of them signed with State I would say it's Darby.

247 changed Womack from safety to CB. Is that how we got em? Letting him play CB?

He will be a S. He knows it. Our staff knows it. No clue what's up with 247 changing him but that's incorrect. His comp ON THEIR SITE is literally Caleb Downs, A SAFETY.

The kid from a HS ON THE 17 CAMPUS signed with LSU. I mean just a massive and unexpected win for Lane Kiffin and the Tigers.

So much for us being rated higher than OM. They're 5 spots ahead with 13 less commits.

Don’t sweat it. I feel confident we will be in a better position than them on the first day of the season next year. They are about to bleed a ton of players in the portal cycle

I hope so. I have a feeling they're about to spend like crazy to make sure they don't fall off a cliff

Of course they are so is everyone else.
Also, the draw to the players there was never the idea of playing at Ole Miss. it was the idea of playing for Kiffin. That?s gone now.

That's true, but they spend more than us. That matters too

Kiffin was really good at evaluating the portal. They are going to miss that a lot. And there was a big discrepancy between their offense and defense. And look at what Kiffin didn't take to LSU.

They could fall off the cliff anyway. What they spend on transfers may not matter at all now.

Jase Mathews may never play a doen there. I'm not saying we have a better class but we do have the top RB in the state. I'd put their class maybe a spot or two above us.
