View Full Version : Mississippi State has a great opportunity

When kiffin leaves tomorrow, we once again have a great opportunity to take advantage of a situation and get our program headed in the right direction. Do we have the Leadership in place to seize the opportunity??? I'm not so sure we do. If we had Leach, or had hired a competent HC when he died, we could really take over the state and make some noise. (not saying Lebby is incompetent. That remains to be seen)

I agree 100%! But like you said we have work to do.
Need to get the staff right on defense, ST, and in the scouting dept and with the recruiting staff.
And after that we need to hit the portal hard and get OUR players back in some instances while at the same time adding veteran talent.
We CAN do this!

Yep a golden opportunity delivered to us by LK himself. Our leadership needs to be bustin *** right now.

There isn't a hire to be made that gets them to the level LK has

We have been in this same situation countless times and 17ed it up every time. I do think we have an administration that has a plan, it seems that our people are willing to fund this thing to get us out of the gutter this time around. I’m going to be controversial here, I don’t think Mike Leach would be the guy for anyone in this situation. His recruiting was not where it needed to be for us to keep up in this era of spend or die, we were falling behind especially in the defensive side of the ball fast and it showed quickly after he was gone. His concepts changed the game he was a visionary and I am glad he coached us, I wish it would have been 15 year earlier.

I doubt it too, but this is a discussion of us vs them, right? There's plenty of coaches they can get that are better than Lebby

What he did for them was to push them to put the machine together to make that success possible. That isn’t going to go away with that staff dissolving it’s still in place and the next staff will have every opportunity for success. That said it’s a double edged sword, next guys not winning 10 a year and he’s not getting it done in the fanboys eyes.

Realistically the best thing that can happen for us is lane is serious about taking OM's staff now or never. Hopefully this forces OM to make one of the cood's the HC just to keep the staff together, so they can get in the playoffs.

Sumrall isn't out of the picture yet.
There was some stuff leaked last night from a Florida booster that said Sumrall has already signed the dotted line to coach Florida. Supposedly gonna be announced today. Apparently Auburn came in hard for Sumrall and Florida made a pretty lucrative offer.
Also states Sumrall wanted the OM job but had to hurry and make a decision. If all this turns out to be true, OM can thank Kiffin for missing Sumrall.

I totally agree! We have had many times to take over a messed up situation at the fake plantation owners. And in recent times we have failed miserably. Ie; the NCAA prohibition period with Matt Luke as their head coach. I hope I am wrong! But this situation of Lane and his ego is pure gold.

Even with NIL they're going to miss Lane's ability to evaluate the portal and his play calling ability. I just don't see how they replace that easily.

It’s never easy, but they have half the equation done. The framework is in place the next guy doesn’t have to build it, he just has to make it work. Making it work is the trick now isn’t it?

We better not waste this opportunity too.

We have as our starting QB, a great kid, local in MS.
Ole Miss will be in a scramble for an offensive guy. We will revamp our defense, hopefully , in this portal and coaching hires.
Time to get OUR STATE back.

Yikes I hope not Fisch would be a better hire than UF and Auburn and Ark made. Why would he leave UDUB to go there? UDUB is a better football program overall

These are the type hires I wish we would have made. Guys who have successfully run FBS programs even though at the G5 level. It just seems like Lebby is just feeling his way through all this flying by the seat of his pants on the HC stuff.

We have really beat this dead horse for two years now. The monster up north has been dismantled. Let?s get behind Lebby, buy our tickets, and reclaim MS for about 5 years.

My biggest concern is the portal. Lebby will need a new 30-35 million dollar roster to save his job. Otherwise, he will need to land the best DC in the country, sooner rather than later. The portal is going to be depleted extremely fast with all these new coaches looking to make splashes.

Yep. If there ever was a huge bang for your buck to spend it is now. Flipping players from OM roster is worth every penny because of the perception in addition to the roster adds.

I don’t give any 17s whose roster it is we need to solidify the staff, and attract talent period. Get this staff set sooner rather than later. We need bodies that can play.

State will not seize the opportunity. They never do. It has nothing to do with coach, administration, or staff. Those change but the results are always the same. We have big boosters who are always looking for a discount so we get discount results.

It will not be as fast as you think. The huge names may go fast, but we don’t need huge to get better

Laugh all you want. All things taken into consideration, what I said is correct. Lemonis walked into the best program in the country and tanked it. Lebby walked into the worst program in the conference and has us trending in a positive direction after a horrendous year 1. If you wanted immediate improvement, you should’ve convinced the dudes who pay for it to front what TTU did. Idk what else to tell you. He is quite literally doing more with less. Next year is the real test. He may still be fired for 6-6, but there a lot of winnable games on our schedule.

BT0 can stay if NCAA approves 5th year eligibility. Think we can keep the rest of the guys on offense pretty easily.

Or our head coach could have just not choked away multiple games with the roster we had.
We didn't need a billionaire's help to with 7 or 8 games. We just needed our a "replacement level" coach. Hell, Coach34 could have gotten us to 7 wins.

that was shot down already. i think it would need to be on a case by case basis at this point. that being said, I'd leave if I was him, he should be able to be an early pick on day 3 of the draft if he runs a good 40. he put out great tape of his speed all season

The NCAA has tabled five to play five and it's on hold until at least the 2027 season. So he's done.
