Well yesterday sucked. There is no way around that feeling. I was pissed and quite frankly am still pissed. If I made this post last night, number 1-8 would have been why we needed to fire Lebby.
1. Yesterday is on Lebby and Shapen, and is a lot more on the Shapen than Lebby. Jeff called a great game yesterday. I mean we had, by my count, three TDs that we missed. Blake overthrew Thompson on one, he led him too far inside on the next drive, and then he just straight overthrew Glover in the back of the end zone. Now, saying that, Jeff is responsible for the last play. That was a god-awful play call no matter which way you look at it. Just center the ball and let Ferrie either win or lose the game. Now, Blake did play well at times. I thought he made some really good throws and had a really good run on the last drive. But you cannot make that throw.
2. There is not going to be a QB change and there is no QB controversy. It was good to see Kamario get in yesterday and even score a TD, but if we went to him as the QB our playbook would shrink to about 10 plays. He just cannot make the throws yet. And it is not an armed talent issue. It is a he cannot progress things and read things fast enough at this stage issue.
3. I thought Booth ran hard and played really well. He had 22 carries and he needed 24 carries. We need to get Gayten on the edge and stop making him a between the tackles runner. There were times where you could tell we missed Fluff yesterday.
4. Thompson and Evans were absolutely incredible. I liked what I saw out of Williams yesterday, I don?t know how you overturn that TD but at the end of the day it didn?t matter because we scored still. Shapen cost Glover a touchdown though. I was really impressed by what I saw out of him yesterday. We need to get him going a little more.
5. I thought the line blocked fine. A couple of the sacks were not on them Shapen just holds the ball too long.
6. DL was pretty good again. They did not get a whole lot of rush, but they stepped up on the last drive when it counted.
7. LB was a little hit and miss. Tillman gave them 30 yards on one drive and he is out for the first half next week. But again, like the DL, they stepped up when it counted and made a stop. They do need to fit on runs a little bit better
8. I was really impressed with the DB room yesterday. They held Wilson in check and a lot of credit goes to Jones on that. We did allow some big plays, but they were never really out of position. Really really impressed with Lanier. He made a great jump on the first interception and honestly had he not dove on the second one I think he takes it to the house.
9. Pulliam has been great in the punt game. He is a real weapon out there for us right now.
10. Ferrie got screwed. The first field goal was good and Lebby just screwed up, not giving him a chance to kick the game winner.
11. We all owe Coleman Hutzler a massive apology. Everyone, including myself, thought it was asinine to keep him, but the improvement out of his defense has been absolutely incredible. They have played well enough for us to be 6-1.
12. Like I said earlier, last night I was pissed and I wanted to fire Lebby, but now that I?ve calmed down, I realize how big of a mistake that would be. First off, if you do it this year, they are going to be at minimum three other SEC jobs open and possibly two or three more. Also, Jeff called a hell of a game. You cannot get mad at him and be pissed about the last play call and not give him credit for the other 65. He put us in position to win that game. He called a hell of a game. That is again where it falls on Shapen. The losing sucks and it doesn?t make the pain any easier but you can tell we are miles better.
13. We still need everyone on board. You can be pissed about yesterday and that is OK because I think we all are. But you cannot jump ship or abandon ship at this point. We still need everyone rowing in the same direction because that?s how this all gets fixed.
Keep the fight, keep the faith, 17 Texas, and HailState

Yesterday's hurt worse than any loss I can remember in the last decade. I was fully invested yesterday and had the rug ripped out from under in another brutal way.
This game was lost in the first half. We had multiple chances to kill the crowd, take a big lead, and bury them early. We missed in every single one of the opportunities outside of the first drive.
Just a little more consistency and we blow them out yesterday. We are much closer, but it's frustrating that we could be 6-1 right now

Next year is when our chance to really improve is. I think we all knew that with our incredibly bad 2 year stretch. It sucks to suck. It would have also sucked to have had a great team go to waste because our schedule was rough. I just want to win. While we will probably see Shapen the rest of the year, it?s discouraging that he?s that old and that bad.

Right on point with this one. If Shapen hits those plays the first half, they fold like cheap suit and we win going away and Lebby is genius and Shapen is great with over 400 passing and we have a receiver with 200+ and another with 100+. Shapen bears a lot of the blame to me. Lebby bears a lot on the last play. Lebby also bears the calls on 4 straight run plays, but if Shapen hits Thompson, we don’t see those 4 run plays.

Good point on Bothwell, we win that game yesterday if he plays. Gayten does not fumble and we probably have another rushing TD

Also, I thought the refs missed 2 targeting calls. I thought the DB hit Thompson with his forearm in the head or neck area in the end zone on the Shapen mis throw to the inside. The other was later in the game I brought up in the game thread. Also, I thought Reese was blocking till the whistle blew and the gator defender didn’t like it and he ripped his helmet off. Good on Reese for not retaliating there. Thought it should have been 15 on them and not us .

Very good post, I was impressed with the effort yesterday. I saw lots of improvements and eventually it will pay off. I'm speaking from my experience of being an ex Coach, being young and a HC most make mistakes. But you learn or good ones do and you move forward. Lebby is much better this year as are our players and team. If we were getting blown out, I would agree with msstate and cry like a baby demanding to fire Lebby, LOL kinda. Anyone who can't see the improvements are fooling themselves! Yes, we need to continue to improve and get better players.
As far as NIL, weird to think some think we don't have the money to compete but yet I see Texas. Tn and Florida and a few others with top NIL money but yet we are very close to them with team play. I'm not saying we are gonna beat Texas Saturday, but we could playing at home.
We are a work in progress and so is Lebby. I saw lots of good things yesterday but the worse thing was our last play call and last pass, it happens.

I'll add a couple more and this is what makes it so frustrating. Its like losing by 1 in basketball in a game where you miss 10 free throws.
1) Shapen hits Thompson
2) Shapen overthrow in back of endzone (This was the possession where Gayten fumbled correct?)
3) Roughing the QB on what would have been 4th and long but kept the drive alive for UF FG
4) Not missing the FG
5) Gayten fumble

True but we didn't need a few. All we needed was just 1 of those 5 to go right and they were all self-inflicted wounds.

Agree with this post. I thought the OL played well against a decent front and gave Shapen plenty of time for the most part, which I didn?t expect coming into the game. Too many missed opportunities, mostly at QB, killed us. If we continue on the trajectory Lebby has us on, we will get over the hump. The self-inflicted near misses are very frustrating right now though.

Shapen needs to stop playing like a *****.
And I'll say this- we're close. And when that win comes it's probably coming in Starkville. Not on the road. And if you look at the rest of the SEC most of the games are one possession games. We're right there with everyone else even though one hasn't went our way yet.

Exactly how I feel, close but can't figure how to close things out. Again, the positive is we have been ib every game, depth has hurt us as have injuries. Not doubt QB play has to make the key plays and be more consistent. Seeing our receivers wide open and not getting the ball is bad. Man our defense never quits so far, they are pretty dang tough in the red zone.

Lebby deserves credit for what he's built and the offensive scheme. That game was there for the taking no question about it. when we went up 7-3 then they went three and out they were done. shapen hits thompson for the TD and we roll. but then we had another chance and another chance and another chance. that was the ultimate "snatching defeat from the jaws of victory" game i've ever witnessed. i did not hate tryin to gain a little more on the last drive. i did hate throwing it to no one but a 300 pound D lineman.
however, there are some things that are definitely on lebby. mainly, the fact that neither of the QBs seem to do the reading part of the read option. on the KT possession if we give on either 3rd or 4th down we move the chains. several times late if shapen gives we have huge plays. the end is crashing to the QB and we keep it and get nothing. that's on Lebby. I would like to see us hire a veteran coach to help with in game situation stuff in the future. Like a bench coach in baseball.

I went back and watched his possession, he should've given it AT LEAST twice on his 3 plays. We easily move the chains on either. That is, again, why he is just not ready. He can't make the read that fast so his default is just keep it. Now add in to that the RPO element of also having to throw it quickly......he can't do that. He's just not ready. He can do what we're currently asking him to do.

Yes- he gives it on either of those and we get the 1st down. Further showing that he is not ready to play yet
One thing I'm enjoying is that we have WR's that are running open. That means we have a good successful scheme. Now having the pieces to execute at a high level becomes the hard part. We can all be disappointed in Shapen and his execution- but he is the best we have. KT is simply not ready

Same. I cannot remember the last time I remember MULTIPLE State receivers that are running open. Like you said, Shapen is the best we have. Kamario just isn't ready. And that's ok! He's a Freshman. i want to see with my own eyes that KT is not ready. Hell , he scored our first TD. he looked pretty damn ready. he has only thrown it once and it was a TD. if we have to trim our playbook-so what. If he is doubt haul ass. Shapen just sucks. Coaches can talk to KT (through his helmet) right up to the snap. Shapen too may times doesn't even let his Wideouts get set, He holds it too long, he overthrows a 4.2 wr, he falls down if you touch Him. Shit let's go with our future. hell let the Fla St guy try. Shapen just aint it.

Exactly, I can't understand why it's so hard to grasp that if the kid was ready he would be on the field. How can anyone think that any coach would not put the player that gives them the best chance to win the game on the field. Coaches are judged by wins and losses period.

Because Kamario is from Mississippi and that automatically makes him better. That is it. That is the reason. If Luke Kromenhoek was from Saltillo, MS instead of Savannah, GA our fans would be saying the same thing. If Kamario Taylor was from Marietta, GA instead of Macon, MS no one would say a thing. And look, it is great that he is from MS and I want him to succeed. But I do not give rats ass if he is from Macon or Missoula. And for like the 200th time, HE IS NOT READY. You can see it. He got a false start penalty against A&M because he changed the cadence up. He missed two zone reads against Florida that both go for first downs because he does not know how to make the read that quickly. It is not a bad thing either or means that he is a bust. He just is not ready. Dak literally did the same thing his true freshman year. We were all screaming for Mullen to let him throw it and he did not trust him to make the reads to throw it.

I was saying the same thing live. What pisses me off most is when Shapen came in and did the EXACT SAME THING instead of handing off. I flipped my lid, like where there not coaches in his ear saying "they are crashing hand the ball off" like what the heck. That's on the coaches and Shapen.

And 24 year old, five year (?) starter made an not so great read on a failed 4th down attempt also, didn't he? What bothered me more was Lebby calling the same type play 4 consecutive times in that offensive sequence.

I don't disagree on that. I think he wanted Kamario to give it and that's why he was running the same play because those ends were crashing extremely hard. Doing the same thing with Shapen was stupid though, we agree on that.

Honestly, I was more annoyed by that series than the pass play at the end of the game. That was completely baffling and to do the same thing on 4th down again. While the pass play was not a good call, this was a big turning point that really started to give UF momentum. We were 47 yards out for a field goal so I get trying to get the ball closer if you have time. Shapen just had a horrible day overall and that was the biggest contributing factor to the loss.

I actually thought Jeff called a really good game, we just didn't execute about 5 of the plays.
I actually think an underrated and unmentioned turning point in the game is the Gayten fumble. We were driving to go up 14-10 right there.

Turned it over on downs? Shapen came in for fourth down and also made a bad read and tried to be the hero running it up the middle. Is that the series that you are referring to or did Karmario fial on another fourth down?

This 100% all day every day
It was the same with Tyler Russell. People couldnt believe I was saying Dak would be better than him. Dak was still the best QB I've seen live in HS until we played Evangel this year and their LSU commit QB was launching 60 yard bombs to the end zone. He is going to be hell to deal with in the coming years

I actually thought Jeff called a really good game, we just didn't execute about 5 of the plays.
I actually think an underrated and unmentioned turning point in the game is the Gayten fumble. We were driving to go up 14-10 right there.
Absolutely, if Shapen connects on those three overthrown passes we would be giddy today for running the fans out of The Swamp in the third quarter and talking shit to our ole miss coworkers at the water cooler.
The fumble was bad but the roughing the passer giving Florida 15 yards and a first down instead of fourth and long was just as bad. That stole just as much momentum and gave Florida points.

PS: never go back to the script. The interlocking looked incredible.
Gayten's fumble was huge.
Kamario is so talented, but just not ready yet.
Our defensive backs have really competed this year. I still don't they are overly talented, but their effort has been excellent. Kudos to them. They were expected to be a real weakness and they haven't been. They haven't backed down from anyone and they have competed their butt off.

They absolutely have. Hell we lead the league in INTs. I'm really happy for a guy like Lanier. He had to play out of position all year last year. He's finally back at his natural safety position and has really thrived there. I agree about our talent. I still don't think they're great, but they're in position and battle their tails off every attempt.

The QBs we've faced in conference is about to really up a level after Saturday. We've only faced 1 top half sec qb in qbr. Manning is another bottom guy, but he's the last one.

The only QB remaining that worries me is Green. Stockton is good, but he more manages the game. I mean his two best games are against Tenn, who we exploited, and Ole Miss, who is not very good defensively. Pribula can't beat you and he turns the ball over a good amount, 7 INTs this year and 4 in his last 2 games. Chambliss is a little hit or miss. He's not as TO prone as Simmons but he's not very accurate. If you make him beat you with the deep ball, he can't do it.
Green scares the hell out of me though. We may need 60 in that game. The good news is that their D will by far be the worst we play all year.
