Another incredible day of football and a great day of doing what we were supposed to do against outmanned opponents. We controlled from the jump and were able to get a lot of guys in there.
1. Shapen looked like he was supposed to look against an FCS opponent. The deep balls were there when we wanted them and he was able to go through his progressions at ease. The one blemish was the pick. And while that wasn?t his fault. He?s got to just eat that one.
2. Taylor is the future. People can fight it all they want on whether crowning a kid the future after 3 games and only a handful of snaps is premature or hasty, but it is plainly obvious. And it is obvious the coaches see it as well. He still needs to come a good ways with consistent accuracy, but he will be the QB in 26.
3. The RBs looked good, although we saw almost none of Booth and that could?ve been by design to keep hits off him early in the season. I thought Bothwell ran well and it was incredible to see Seth Davis get a TD there at the end.
4. We still need a WR3 to emerge. I keep holding out hope that Ayden Williams will emerge but that hope is starting to fade. Thompson and Evans are obviously incredible but we need someone else to step up.
5. The OL was up and down once more. I thought they got good push, as expected, on runs but they were really having trouble picking up blitzes from Alcorn. Reese being a late scratch obviously caused us to shift James to RT, but I think Reese will return there. I think the starting line we will roll with is going to be Lewis, Owens, Boone, Jackson, and Reese
6. The DL was most concerning coming into the game and it is most concerning exiting the game. I know we were just extremely base but we still were getting no push and we need to be able to generate some form of pass rush without having to send the house.
7. LBers did what they were supposed to do and there was not really anything noteworthy. I really hope Jalen Smith can get more consistent and start seeing more snaps in the weeks to come.
8. I thought the DBs did what they needed. They got beat a couple of times and Deago got lucky on the INT because he was beat and the QB placed the ball perfectly. But it is better to be lucky than good sometimes.
9. Overall I thought we played well in spurts but probably left some points out there.
10. Good show of sportsmanship by Lebby to agree to let it be 10 minute quarters in the second half. I do not know if I would have done that.
11. Still a lot to clean up, but it cannot be overstated how improved we are. Hell, we exceeded our win total from last year yesterday. IN SEPTEMBER.
12. Watching all the other games yesterday, we have a lot to improve on. However, watching ASU maul TX State late last night proved to me that we have improved by leaps and bounds. Leavitt went wherever he wanted with the ball and Tyson looked like how he was hyped up to look.
On to Northern Illinois. HailState

ASU opened-14.5 so that was an impressive bounce back for them.
Unfortunately, the Whitson injury may cost us 1-3 wins. He was that important to this team.

I do not think it will cost us more than a win, if that. He was a big loss no doubt but Burroughs is finally in playing shape and Moye is improving weekly. Look, we knew we would not have Whitson for more than 8 games. He is just not consistently healthy. We just hoped to have him for more than 1.5.

I want to see how Kamario looks on progression reads. His deep ball is on point and looks great. He obviously has a running dimension that Shapen doesn't have. He needs to add some muscle and will as time goes on. He reminds me a lot of Hendon Hooker at Tennessee.
I really like Xavier Gayten. We can use Booth and Bothwell as receivers some with Gayten and Davis at RB and that might help the wide receiver issue. I agree that we need some guys to step up some from the Ayden/San Frisco/Ricky Johnson/Mosley group. We need a recover that is 6'5" like Frizzell at Tennessee that can body up DB's on the outside. Getting more receivers involved is something that I hope is an emphasis next weekend. We ran trick plays and we didn't look like a circus or like we only practiced the play once. Really enjoyed that and fun to see that!
When the line is finally out together I think we'll be fine. Our sacks allowed and rushing totals aren't terrible especially given the competition we have faced compared to others.
Our defense is going to be bend but don't break. It is what it is there but I thought we did a good job mixing up coverages and looks and things like that. Our secondary looks pretty solid to me and Kelly Jones is an elite cornerback. Branden Jennings has done a great job as a spy this year.
Special teams has been solid this year too.
I didn't know that cutting down the fourth quarter was a thing either. I would have just hung 70 on them and went home. Might be in part to try to keep injuries down who knows?
But I'll say this again- that was about as close to a flawless FCS game performance as I have ever seen. We scored on 9/11 possessions I think- 1 being the INT where we got the ball right back almost immediately and then scored again. We got the shutout and they didn't bust really any huge plays and really only sustained one drive the whole game. Even against our backups. We almost played a completely perfect game on both sides of the ball. Really fun to see!
And I think that USM win is also looking better for us. They kicked Appalachian State's butt at home. And Arizona State is a good team as well. Just need to keep it going and avoid the trap game against UNI.

The progression reads is what people say is kind of holding Kamario back. He tends to start to hurry and rush the reads and throws if his first read is not there. He was really accurate on the gadget play deep ball but he was way off target on the other deep ball he threw.

Both the 3rd and 4th quarter were only 10 minutes as per agreement of both HC's. I didn't even know that was a NCAA rule that was available in a blowout. Heck, we put up OM type numbers against an overmatched opponent in 10 less minutes than they do!**** In HS games of this type, they run the clock with no stoppage at some point in the game. Hail State, and beat N Illinois!
Thanks for the analysis SVS. Good points!

I can accept 50% on deep passes from any QB though. Small sample size here of course. But they need to be about 70-75% on the short passes. He really just needs to redshirt IMO and learn.

If we had left our starters in, we literally could have named our score. Even with some of the lopsided scores we've had in the past, I don't think I've ever thought that before. What I really liked was we put up 63 and allowed 0 while getting snaps for 4 QB's, 6 RB's and going way off of the depth chart all over the place all the way down to kickoffs. Freeze/Kiffin put up those numbers leaving starters in until the final 2 minutes and still running trick plays late into the 4th quarter.

If it would have been 15 minute quarters we would have threatened 80.

Ten minute quarters??!!?? Who knew??!!?? Tip of the cap respect Coach Leb. No need to embarrass our in-state friends. We accomplished what we needed to on all fronts.

I think we accomplished both of what you and I wanted to see. Embarrassed them enough to shorten the game, weren’t a**hats that tried to run up the score. Alcorn can cash their check and we get a shutout

Agreed. And all these people saying that Whitson is a huge loss complain about the running game. He wasn’t going to help much with that anyway. We just need something out of Sylla, Andersen, and maybe Hibbler.
Plus, with the bodies we now have at DL it should allow us to get home more with stunting linebackers and safeties. That just wasn’t a thing last year, at all.

It could maybe cost us one win but not more. Whitson was a drive stopper about 2-3 times a game by himself so yeah we gonna miss him.
I do think we have enough talent to counter but we need to blitz and mix it up more to counter a one on one battle that he could win. It will come down to coaching.
