I believe IF or when we win another CWS it would generate more interest in our program as far as recruits. Lsu does have an advantage because of Skip Bertman, I'm hoping BOC leads us to another or two. One thing about college baseball, anybody in D1 can have a chance of making a trip to Omaha, ask Murray State.

I'm excited at the future, I am really impressed with the search committee, having Buck Showalter giving advice had to help along with many ex Msu players.

1st thing is it has to be marketed by the university. MSU never pushed it in any national televised event. Anytime you look at an OM Event on TV be it FB BB or tidliwinks the 1st thing you see is an dogpile when they won it. Even to this day it's the 1st they have in their commercials. Not once the past few years do I recall a MSU dogpile in any televised event commercial.

They may not have pushed it since - but 4 years have also gone by that weren't that great.

I always hated hearing that. While it is true, it is a backhanded insult to some degree.

I think MSU baseball has gone through different stages historically.

We have always been a Southern baseball power back to the days of Willie Mitchell.

Then we finally went to Omaha with Gregory in 1971. And that became the bar.

Then Polk raised the bar when we beat Cal State Fullerton in our opening game in 1979. That became the bar. To make it to Omaha and make some noise.

Then Thunder and Lightning happened in 1985 and MSU fans began to believe that maybe we could win a National Championship.

Then we made the finals under Cohen in 2013 and that increased the belief.

2021 was the final step which showed that we could win anything and everything in college baseball.

Now is the time to become a powerhouse that we all know that we can be.

I've always said that college baseball is better when Mississippi State is good at baseball. When you consider the circumstances that the program is in location wise there is no more passionate fan base. Winning is going to take it to another level because people love a winner. And I met people that became MSU baseball fans because of 2021. If we win more National Championships it's going to be unimaginable I think.

Good points Todd. I totally agree. Speaking of that 1971 team, u talk about some ditbaggers. That was when Left Field started to become the legend it is today. LOL. Talk bout fun! Paul Gregory was an awesome gentleman and coach!

One of the unique things about baseball, and especially college baseball, is that underdogs can win it. CBB has always been more interesting because of the Cal State Fullertons, Wichita States, Coastal Carolinas etc. I think that because of our lack of football success, most people outside of MSU see us in that underdog light. And, we are one of the few in that "underdog" class that has consistently made it to Omaha over the decades. So i guess that makes us something line the king of the underdogs?

1. It sucks that Polk under achieved so bad in a time when few other programs cared and no other program had near the resources as he did.
2. We need to claim the 1941 Football Natty.

f' yeah. Bama claims 1941, at the time of claiming (in the 80s), their SID excused their loss to us (and Vandy), due to "rain."

There aren't any legitimate college football national titles prior to 1998 (or arguably 2014 or even 2024), so any year that you finished with 1 or 0 losses, just claim it.

And not to make anyone uncomfortable, but does anyone really think any all-white Southern team prior to 1970 was actually the best in the country? Alabama claims national titles from 1961, 1964, and 1965 (playing only Southern teams in each year), but I doubt they would beat the best integrated Northern team or the SWAC champion either.

It would cringy the first year, but after a couple of years folks would accept it and it would be just as legit as Bama's

Easy there my man. Those teams were still very damn good. Integrated northern teams during that time had their chance to go undefeated and win the NC. . SWAC teams had great athletes but still werent top teams top to bottom. We could go back to the mid-80's when Valley had Totten and Rice and State would have beaten them by 50. 1970's Bama would embarrass the SWAC

Gregory is a bit underrated by MSU fans. I believe he actually won more SEC titles than Polk did. And without Gregory and the foundation he laid I doubt he we have Polk or the crowds that helped attract Polk in the first place. The LFL as you know also started during Gregory's time as well.

The real issue we had with Polk is we refused to let go when he wanted to leave- which happened TWICE. If we would have let him move along we probably would have won a NC long before 2021. IMO the biggest thing that held us back goes back to not letting Polk. So, more history! When Polk was in his prime in the 1980's there was a grand total of ZERO SEC teams that had ever won the CWS. It was a completely different era. The West Coast teams, Texas, and Miami ruled. So, if he had actually won a NC in the 1980's it would have been unprecedented. The SEC didn't win one until Georgia of all teams did it in 1990. LSU then followed in 1991. In the meantime in 1991 or 1992 Polk tried to leave to take charge of Team USA baseball and I think Ron Fraser at Miami was also trying to talk him in to succeeding him at Miami. Polk wanted to leave. Augie Garrido was rumored to want our job. We begged Polk to stay- allegedly everyone's favorite bus driver was a big part of it as well as LT. We kept Polk until 1997 and stagnated even though we went to Omaha in 1997-1998 we weren't even close to what we were in the 1980's. Polk leaves. We beg him back four years later and then decline into an average team and eventually bad. Could have easily had prime Paul Manieri at that time. Then we had to deal with the Polk/Raffo and Cohen/Byrne saga which we are just now fully and completely recovering from. Point is had we moved on we probably would have won at least one more NC or more. Thanks LT.

And yes, we need to claim the 1941 NC!

89 and 90 were kind of the last high water marks for Polk. He scuffled after that and kind of backdoored into Omaha in 97, since those were the days that you bid to host a regional and we were a 2 in our regional. If Polk wanted to leave in the early 90s then we probably should've let him go, but you can look who our AD was at the time and figure out pretty quickly why we didn't. We would never have spent the money to bring an Augie Garrido to Starkville as long as LT was the AD, and it's the same reason we didn't hire Mainieri in 01 when he was begging for the job. We were always going to hire Pat after Polk left and Templeton probably would've paid UGA to get Polk back in 01.

You're absolutely right. And I have heard stories that in addition to LT there were rumors of some very prominent Left Field Loungers who had a lot of say and influence in bringing Polk back. People that really shouldn't have ever had that kind of say.

As far as Garrido though- he was at Illinois I believe at the time. He wanted the job and we didn't give him the time of day. So I don't think it would have taken a ton of money to get him. He ended up going back to Cal State Fullerton and MSU has always had more resources than them- although Kevin Costner would have made it interesting. Same with Manieri about 10 years later.
