I would prefer it to be on Saturday. But that's just me.
Having the Egg Bowl on Thanksgiving Day sucked. And anyone that thinks that the student section will be worse the day after Thanksgiving compared to Thanksgiving Day- LOL OK.
It's not like those Thanksgiving Egg Bowls were sell outs either. Probably the highest attended one I remember recently was in 2007 which was an early kickoff on a Friday or Saturday followed closely by 2009.

If we want a better slot then the football team needs to start winning some games. ESPN isn't going to want to put a 2-10 team against a 9-3 team in a prime slot the same weekend as the Iron Bowl.

If we are worth dressing out by then it'll draw a good crowd, unless it's shitty rain overcast and 49. They're trying to minimize the rivalry now that there are so many blue bloods in the league.

We have no right to complain about any TV slot after going 2-10 and losing every SEC game by double digits. Until we start winning games we will be lucky to get many games outside this slot

We probably won't get but one if we do. We may never see SEC Nation in town again.

We've had good crowds on Friday before. 2007 I know.
I don't really see the issue. If we have 5 wins going into that game, there will be a good crowd. The gap between the two rosters is much more narrow than it was 6 months ago.

Agree with this!
I could never go to the Thursday game, just due to spending time with family everywhere.
If anything, at least for me, this is almost perfect. See family on Thursday, and go to the game early enough on Friday, to still keep traveling on by the afternoon.

Saturday would be the ideal time, although I personally loved it on Thanksgiving, but we will never get it back on Saturday again unless we get good once again. It will be destined for the 11 AM SEC Network game on Friday until then.

The 23 Egg Bowl was also on ESPN, and did a good rating, and we were terrible. They would've let us stay on Thanksgiving but too many of our fans were complaining that it was on Thanksgiving and just thought we'd get to pick what day we played on. We've now left it up to ESPN/SEC like it was from 04-12. There may be a couple of years we get that Saturday game but for the most part we'll be playing at either 11 or MAYBE 2:30 on Friday.

The bigger factor is Texas joining the league. Eventually they're going to play that game on Thanksgiving I assure you. Fans of both of those schools enjoyed playing on Thanksgiving.
I don't believe very many Ole Miss fans liked playing it on Thanksgiving and per several informal polls only 60-65% of MSU fans were for it.
I think our fans were starting to get burned out on it. If we're going to play on Thanksgiving I'd prefer we rotate it with others so we're not stuck there.

There's no rotating. It's all or nothing. That's according to people in the athletic dept. ESPN offered us that date for 3 years and we turned it down. It would've ran from 24-27. MAYBE they offer us that date again in the future but I imagine Texas will get first crack at it. This means it's completely up to ESPN when we will play that game. And I imagine more times than not we'll be playing at 11 AM on Friday.

The point I was trying to make was that sometimes you need to play the game with ESPN. They probably would've been more likely to put us on Saturday at whatever time we wanted had we taken the Thanksgiving slot for an additional 3 years. Now we just have to hope every year we get Saturday.

Not even that far back 18 through 22 was electric too even with the awful coaches. ESPN gave their announcers the green light to lean into the true hate between the schools and it got eaten up. Personally, I like it better. The game will be over by 2:30 or so which means I get home at a decent time and if we win I can enjoy a nice dinner at a nice restaurant. Or I could go watch one of the State Championship High school football games after. Plus, I would imagine more things are open in Starkville on Friday anyway. This has to be better for local businesses.
And I know the biggest criticism is 11:00 tailgating sucks which is a fair point but at the same time who really wants to go to The Junction and Grove for Thanksgiving dinner? I'm sure there are a few sects of fans whose entire family goes with them to games and they tailgate but I can't imagine that is the case for most people. It does seem like there are WAY fewer people tailgating on Thanksgiving Egg Bowls. I can't imagine very many people want to keep gorging themselves with food at a tailgate after a Thanksgiving dinner. I also can't imagine that are very many people dragging Grandma to the tailgate at the Junction or Grove to have Thanksgiving.
I would imagine that Friday works better for most students too. They're off that week I think so they'll have plenty of time to see family and get back for the game without it interrupting their Thanksgiving family plans too much.

But Thanksgiving kind of IS an issue there isn't it? Whether you are for having the Egg Bowl or not on Thanksgiving- if you want to go to the game it's something that our fans have to address with their families and it definitely affects plans for those that want to go to the game or not.
For some fans it's no problem.
For many of our fans it may be a little harder because they essentially have to choose between spending time with their family on Thanksgiving vs going to the game. Some choose to go to the game and some choose to stay home. Some people go out of town for Thanksgiving and having it on Friday might give some of those people more of an opportunity to go to the game.
I do think it affects attendance in a negative way based on what I have seen over the years and I honestly would not be surprised if the attendance is much better this year than it has been in awhile especially if our team looks respectable.

Well yes of course it is an issue there is no doubt there. But the positives that come with it are much better for Mississippi state than an 11am Friday game. We are not getting a Saturday 2:30 or 6pm slot ever on rivalry week. A prime time national game on Thursday night blows an 11am Jefferson pilot out the water.
The attendance thing I think is a moot point you will have more young crowd there for Thursday and more old crowd for Friday. It is going to be absolutely dead Friday at 11

I agree its been good for a long time but back in the 90s the Thursday night game was the game of the week on ESPN and Egg Bowl night became famous nationally because of that that decade. Kirk, Corso and Fowler did the game. It was huge; almost as big as getting gameday at that time.

It was probably more memorable for MSU fans because we won the SEC West in 1998, had the pass, pick, and kick in 1999, and then beat Eli in 2001. I don't think the rivalry really stood out to the rest of the country until 2019 when Elijah Moore pretended to be a dog and cost Ole Miss the Egg Bowl. Maybe 2018 when Abrams bitch slapped AJ Brown and started that brawl. Maybe a combination of the two. Leach and Kiffin was good for TV too. Football fans want to watch a match up like that.
And let's be honest - Elijah Moore probably would have went viral no matter when we played that game.
Same thing ended it last time. We started to suck under Jackie and ESPN put Texas and A&M and maybe West Virginia/Pitt on instead.
Like I said though- Thanksgiving is eventually going back to Texas/Texas A&M. This was going to happen eventually.

Our fans can want all they want for that game to be played on Saturday. It does not matter. If the SEC tells us we are playing it 2 PM on a Tuesday then whether there are 50 fans or 50,000 fans we will be playing at 2 PM on Tuesday. This fallacy that we get to choose when we want to play the egg bowl is exactly that, a fallacy.
Unless we start showing a couple of years of upward mobility and looking like we can be a good team, then the egg bowl is going to stay on Friday at 11 AM or maybe we get the 2:30 Friday slot one year. When we opted against continuing the game on Thanksgiving for a few years, we gave up all bargaining power with ESPN And the SEC.

We can absolutely tell the SEC what we want. It will fall on deaf ears as it always does, that's the whole point. We've gotten 17d over by the SEC these two years of expansion schedules. They couldn't have 17 us harder with a Clam Rattler 5000, with a 1000 HP engine.
Well technically we did tell the SEC what we wanted. We said we did not want to play on Thanksgiving anymore and got our wish.

We'll be there no matter the date or time. Want to be featured in a better time slot or date? Don't go 2-10 the previous season, 2-2 in OOC and 0-8 in the SEC. Will we even get to fire up our LED lights this season? Do they work at 11:00 AM?

I think it will all work out as long as om has an equally tough/easy game the week before as the DOGS. For years it always bothered me the years Dogs had a brutal SEC game and they always seemed to have a patsy........maybe my memory is just shot. I guess until the DOGS become a viable physical ball team again it probably won’t matter.

Sometimes yes and sometimes no. I'm pretty sure we played East Tennessee State before playing the Egg Bowl in 2022 while Ole Miss had Arkansas on the road. I definitely remember years where it was the other way around too.
That is another thing I didn't like about playing on Thanksgiving- it essentially gave both teams one less practice day a week to prepare for what is basically the biggest game in Mississippi. And yeah I know we focused some on Ole Miss the week we played ETSU but it's another distraction.
Would have been better if both teams had a bye week the Saturday before the Egg Bowl which would have given the players on both sides more time to rest and prepare for the Egg Bowl.
With it being on Friday or Saturday no it's not as big a deal.
