The strength of the SEC in hoops is the only thing keeping our fan base from the absolute pits of hell right now.
This is exactly what I feared when NIL and transfer portal crap kicked in. We don't have the brains or the dollars in our athletic program to avoid being in the cellar. And unfortunately I don't have any solutions or ideas without an influx of major funds that we just don't have.
Not good, boys. We need coaches that can do more with less. Jans is worth keeping bc we can do no better. Lemonis is a dead man rolling, and Lebby is yet to be determined but he's playing with a hand and foot tied behind his back compared to the rest of the league in football money.
I have never cared less about MSU athletics, and I doubt I'm the only one. I hate what college sports has become, and I don't see it going back to a good place, but time will tell. Does anyone have any suggestions on how State can overcome this and keep us from being dead last in all sports within a few years? I am at a loss, and those that know me know I've never been short on thoughts and suggestions for MSU sports.

For us to succeed in sports now, we're gonna have to become the Tampa bay rays. Be smarter than the big money programs. I don't feel we're very smart though.

Yeah that's terrifying
My only suggestion is to totally tank all the funds to all sports and go 100% all in on the only sport that truly matters, football. But we have too many fans and donors that would melt, so it will never happen. They'd rather suck at all 3 than be super competitive in 1 and suck at the other 2.

Nice to see you posting again Cadaver.
But how to fix it you ask?
Move MSU to Southaven or an area that can generate more cash than Starkville can.
OR
Beg Ole Miss to combine schools and resources and be what LSU is in Louisiana.
Kidding of course... but not really.

We could have all the money from all programs and then double it for football and we'd still find a way to win less than 10 games. Is it worth demolishing the rest of our athletics for such?

Probably. Before the fans bail on all 3
Heck we were better at baseball when we had a bunch of dirtbags that were under recruited anyway. Bring back the Cody Browns and let the chips fall where they may. Spend money on football. Just my thoughts

What is there worth saving? Seriously? Basketball is the easiest because the money you spend in football could get a damn good 8-9 players on the team. Football is all that matters. Most people can?t tell you who played in the last two NCAA basketball finals.

I blame anyone with authority in the athletic dept. but I blame most on nil/portal. Till college athletics gets straightened out I am checking out. Sure I’ll occasionally watch a football game, basketball game and might attend a couple baseball games but the days of me spending thousands of dollars, spending a bunch of time planning trips to Starkville, a bunch of time tailgating, are over! Again I doubt I’ll return even if they do fix nil/portal. The I way see it there is little to no hope that we will be nothing more than a doormat to the rest of SEC. That doesn’t sit well with me.

Tied for second in softball.
Had a great year in women's soccer.
Women's basketball is still alive in the postseason.
Time to accept what ya shoulda learned from ya grannies and momma - women in Mississippi are just better than men. Definitely better to watch. And I don't just mean that aesthetically.
Also we just finished 7th in the country in Indoor Track & Field. Could be a good outdoor season.
I get it - football is the moneymaker, baseball is the pastime, and seeing dude's dunk is fun. But if you want to play a long game at improving Mississippi State - make the women's sports teams the best. Lotta growth potential in their sports - Caitlyn Clark showed that. Need to get the Mississippi State version of Caitlyn Clark in all these other sports.

From the same sports genius who would have you believe we were built for a national championship run in men?s just a week or so ago.
I assume if we follow your strategy we just integrate with the W ( or whatever it is at this point ) and really become the Mississippi university for women and let Ole miss just take the reigns in all the male sports that?ll really show them who runs the show around here lol

We were plenty capable of making a run. Plenty to be excited about. Then we disappointed. I had a fun week leading up to the inevitable disappointment most predicted. I don't really care about being right and quitting early. Ruins the fun for me. I'm pulling in the same direction and agreement that we gotta do something different next year.
But if we think the ceiling is hit on these other sports, why not take a couple mil and sprinkle it on something else and have our own thing to be proud of. Cheering for anyone wearing State is cool for me. I'll enjoy this softball run. These girls are good. If it wasn't for field dimensions, I'd say swap the baseball and softball teams until the baseball team earns it back. LFL crew wouldn't miss a beat.

Mark was trying to be ahead and beat DEI. That?s why those sports are good right now. We invested a lot in volleyball, softball, soccer, and WBK.
Until we get someone who can tie our NIL to hotels, restaurants, shops, etc in Starkville-collectively a ?NIL Tax? we will still have some issues. And let me point out-we aren?t hurting for funds. We have more alumni willing to help and have the means to help than our own fans give us credit for (a lot of our fans feed into the narratives of we are poor farmer boys). We just need more. And we need a President who isn?t a goob and we need everyone pulling into one direction and not one faction here, one faction there. I hate to say it, but what OM did with their NIL efforts and ?screw you? attitude had paid off. Maybe instead of worrying about feeding the opposing team after sweeping us for the ?experience? we start worrying more about winning for once.

Oh I know this. I'm more pissed about our academics slacking under his leadership, especially in the STEM fields, but didn't want to go off topic. Haha, it's so awful being a State fan.
I actually got excited for the weekend....State in the dance, the baseball team with a chance at erasing last weekend with a good road series, the women dancing (not that I really remembered)....
And what happens? Basketball team lays another turd in a big moment, baseball team sucks, ole miss women's AND men's team to the sweet 16, and their baseball team sweeps Mizzou on the road. And our one bright spot was women's hoops, and their reward is to be utterly embarrassed tomorrow night.
Yet another reason why people are becoming apathetic. Not only do most of our programs suck, they always find a way to ruin even the most exciting possible weekends. Our fans are very rarely rewarded with a good win in a big moment.
Hello darkness, my old friend.

Yeah well when you love something that much and the results are on a downward trend, you need to back up and had over the reigns to someone who can right the ship. You and I have talked about this. His recruiting department on campus does not hit Dallas enough, does not hit the Carolinas, the FL panhandle, Georgia, etc.

Here's the optimist take. Juju hurt her hand and ankle. An O/U of 147.5 feels insane for how good these two teams are defensively. And if we get them in a defensive shitshow, we're like a pig in mud who can beat em with experience. Now come midnight tomorrow I'll be sad, but I ain't disappointed until the games over when it's the postseason.

Great song reference; very apropos (I like the Disturbed cover of that song also). Dark times in Dawg sports. And, yes, combining the large state schools into one is the answer but it will never happen. And honestly don't think I could stomach it. I'm lifer Maroon & White; there can never be another.
And trying to pump more money into football, no matter the plan to accomplish it, doesn't guarantee success. A&M says hi.
Wish I could see a path forward for us in college sports; the death bell is growing louder by the day.

Our athletic department is subpar at best.
All the stories on Saban are that he demanded perfection through the football program down to the cleanliness of the bathrooms in the building.
It all has to be perfect.
See our department.
- We get this big bell to ring at the stadium and it?s not bolted down and falls over - details. How does that happen? Details.
- hailstate app -couldn?t listen to basketball at the end of the year - it would link to something else - never fixed. Details.
Stuff like that is bush league but builds your culture negatively.
Our fans are defeatist as well.
When NIL comes out we could all give small amounts and be a big winner in NIL. However you mention it on message boards and the reason a is that will never work. Let?s just get big boys to give. Then we are on here bitching about why we can?t win.
We are the reason we cant win.

Does not matter. Was he ever convicted??? The answer is no btw. That is all that matters. It is all just allegations after that. Guess who else has allegations we are too scared to hire…..Art Briles. But damn allegations. All it is. Just BS

The ONLY reason he was not convicted is because the victim would not testify for the prosecution. This happens a lot in domestic violence. But there's no denying the physical evidence on the scene.

Meanwhile OM is a top 16 team nationally in all 3 sports. Damn, they're superior to us in all the sports
No-they?re masters at selling their propaganda and having people believe it. Our own fans. There is more money at State than there, our alum just don?t flash or talk about it. They?d rather go unknown. Ole Miss has gotten the by in from the middle level guys whereas, as we have seen on our boards, we?d argue about what is right and wrong. And those who decide they don?t want to help the cause continue to gripe.
Until we all get on same page and start believing you can build something in Starkville (and you can. Mullen showed it, Cohen/Cann showed it, Jans and Stans showed it) we will continue to believe the news of ?poor farmers?, ?red necks?, ?can?t win?. It?s all bs that our fans believe. We can and have to do better. It starts with Mark and Zach but it goes all the way down to the last of us. We have yo end the good ole boy network that has plagued us for so long and clamoring ?attendance records? and ?feeding other teams?. I?m tired of being nice-I?m ready to start winning and competing in everything. Living in Bama and Auburn territory does that to you.

This is an honest post. The NIL is taking this brand name and identity on a path to the underworld.

I like when we have a coach that is a likeable guy, but I like winning more. We don't pay coaches to be good dudes. Reminds me an awful lot of the Presidential races....any time someone says, "but he just doesn't seem like a nice guy", I'm sorry but most of the best leaders the world has ever seen weren't great dudes. Sometimes it takes being not a great dude to make some of the decisions it takes to win the damn war.
How much are the talking heads talking about Beard and Kiffin's past right now? Ole Miss fans and AD have the mindset of "we aren't marrying the guy, we are just hiring the best guy to win games"....and that's exactly what is happening. Meanwhile we have a likeable plump little bucket sitter destroying our baseball program and a likeable AD unwilling to fire his ass....but at least they're likeable, right?
We are in the most competitive conference in amateur athletics, and half of our fan base acts like we are Mississippi College or Belhaven. And we wonder why we can't overcome our financial issues.....we couldn't win if we had A&M's money bc we are too nice.
Ole Miss is a bunch of pricks. But they know it, own it, and are the pricks sitting in the Top 16 in pretty much every sport. Not saying it's right, just saying it's facts.

Just glad I don't care as much anymore. Now if we happen to upset someone I just record it and watch the replay instead of putting myself through hours of investment to be disappointed

To OP I'll add my 2 cents that I'm sure most will disagree.
While NIL and portal changed things short term I don't think the model for MSU to compete is any different than it used to be. We never were top in recruiting or getting top coaches in our history and still had pockets of success - Jackie and Mullen eras. So what is our formula?
1. Get smart, good respectable coaches. Leach was part of it but he was stubborn but he was close if he would have just adapted his O.
2. Get top talent in Miss. It may not be ranked high in nation but it will win games. And get the kids that want to be here. Yeah pay to play but we need some Bulldog True Maroon leaders in the locker room. We can all name some True Bulldogs that even today would stick it out for their school and still get paid.
3. Get smart on scheduling - like get some easy wins like OM does every year and put them all up front so we are 3-0 to build some excitement even if it is false like OM does. A month of positivity matters.
4. Invest in PR efforts, media, etc. Highlight our school, Starkville, etc. instead of our fans running it down all the time. We have some good stories to tell that make MSU a great place to be. I see it all the time from parents and kids of other schools that end up at MSU. MSU is doing a lot of stuff right. We are our own worst enemies.

I’ve been saying for 2 years now that State will be relegated when realignment happens. It doesn’t matter that we are a founding member of the SEC we will be out. Our NIL is dead last, our hiring practices are laughable, our marketing still sucks (but there’s not much to market in their defense). It’s unfortunate, but we have some boneheaded boosters and an out of touch out of date AD staff that put us so far behind that it’s pretty much out of reach now. We replaced that staff with a trainee. Our boosters pretty much just like hanging out, drinking, and giving each other high fives. It’s funny and really backwards. It’s all over but the crying.

We will be aligned to a conference where we can function under our NIL requirements and be competitive in major and ancillary sports. I'm starting to accept it. Just wait until we have a full decade of losing our ass in all major sports. This realignment will be welcome by some and eventually accepted by most. There are probably admin and booster people laughing and shaking there heads to what I'm saying, but if they are here much longer they won't be laughing long.
Edit- I could see a possible situation where we can stay in line with the super conference in a particular sport of two. I could see that. If the TV powers that be make those provisions with the NCAA. Besides the SEC won't be called SEC when all this happens.

I know what the Good Book says (God's Word) and it says that we are all selfish and full of pride. I see it every where I go. People make selfish decisions all the time to better theirselves. Too many are fooling theirself if you think otherwise.
Yes some people make decisions not based on cheating, etc. to win but even God fearing people do it too.

Anything is possible and this could happen as realignment continues but we must remember someone has to be the Washington Generals (Harlem Globtrotters opponent that lost every game). As Mullen said 50% of teams lost today and someone got to lose. It just feels like SEC has decided one of those teams is us.

Like others have said, I am concerned in the next 5-10 years we will be one of the next Oregon State/Washington State type teams. Realignment is constantly changing, but I just don't see us being in the same league as Ohio State, UGA, Bama, etc. Football is what drives this, so being good in basketball outside of being a blue blood is not as recognized. No one cares at all regarding baseball when it comes to this, hence Oregon State would have got an invite to the Big 12. I have accepted there is nothing that can be done about it, but it will be extremely disappointing if and when it happens. Ole Miss being better than us at both football and basketball though is a major disadvantage. They have two great coaches, while we have a good coach in Jans and a big question mark in Lebby. The next few years will tell us if we have the ability to compete in this new world or not. Unfortunately, it is not looking good at this point in time.

Not only is OM better than us in football and basketball, they've been relevant more recently in baseball than we have. I don't believe it's ever been this way in my lifetime. Normally, you just deal with it and think it's cyclical and will pass, however we've been pulled into the NIL orbit as a permanent crumb. Outside of baseball, we would have to get extremely, extremely lucky in the portal, with coaches, hungry players, despite being out-recruited to have one great season in football or basketball now. Just one season!

Lane Kiffin was a Big time hire for Ole Miss. Beard may have been unemployed. But he was a big time hire. When Bianco retires, they will make a big time hire. McPhee seems to be a nice hire. I believe they have a Women's Golf NC. Once they add Beach Volleyball, it will be katybarthedoor!
Meanwhile check our hires. Women's Golf -good. Women's Soccer-good. Men's Tennis- good. Men's basketball came from a mid-major. Football as has been our history is either a twilight former HC or a Coordinator or a RB's coach. Baseball, we went all the way to the Big 10 where Hockey and curling are more popular.

They take chances on guys and we do not.
We could have hired Kiffin in 2017 and did not even interview him. Would he have come? I have no clue. But the best way to not find out is not even interview him.
Although it is a rumor, I think there is a lot of truth to the fact that we had Sark hired and someone vetoed it. Whether that be Keenum, the board, or someone else. Because I know for a fact we had graphics with Sark on them and had a press conference scheduled already.
You know we would never have hired someone like Chris Beard.
We have tons of safeguards around the Briles thing. We will not just let him be an analyst even though he wants to help and would be a great voice in Lebby’s ear on gameday.
That is the difference. They want to win. They know that the noise dies when the winning is happening.

And that is why our athletic program will be the practical death nail in our coffin. Once we aren't invited to the new super conference and Ole Miss is, our student roll will dwindle to USM levels. The vision of our leaders has been so ****ed up, I'm surprised we have gotten this far. I say **** it and let Art Briles be the OC because no one will give a flying rats **** if we start winning at a higher rate.

AU hired Pearl and Freeze, both had major issues with the NCAA. If you want to win at a high level, you have to have the balls to take chances on accomplished coaches regardless of the baggage. We hired Sherrill and never again did we take that chance!

If we get "relegated" as said, we won't compete. We will be another nobody if nobody's. No tv check. No chance. Sorry just is what it is.

We never had sark hired. Not true. Cohen wasn't In love w sark. He was meh in process and didn't think he'd stay if he won anyway.

Another reason we make up to not hire someone. Well he will win but he will not stay. So what? Take the winning.

Exactly. If the coach stays 3 years and moves on then fine. It's the winning that matters. That makes you relevant. Having someone commit to being here for 5+ years is ridiculous. Take the winning and make the job attractive to young up and coming coaches that want SEC experience. Ride the wave.

sounds opposite of a guy who wins big largely with another coaches players and then gets to stay for that reason only as he slowly allows the program to recede.

52% 3p at home and 32% on the road. He'd be nice but I'm not holding my breath.
Gimme 6-7 months and I'll be way more hyped and sunshine pumpy

Jackie taught us to win again, also my favorite all time (Even though wheels came off for various reasons last three years) and saw my first of hundreds of games in 1963, age eight. Lots of very poor MSU HC's in my lifetime (and AD's).

Women sports do not matter.
If that is your answer, then we have already lost the real battle.
