View Full Version : Jake Mangum - Rays Spring Training

Bottom Line Jake is killing it. 429 batting average and leads the team in RBI and HR.

https://www.espn.com/mlb/team/stats/_/name/tb/tampa-bay-rays

If the Rays are too stupid to use him, I hope they trade him to someone that will. Mangum's AAA stats were far exceeding the boring and useless prospects that Tampa Bay promoted last year.

Jake had a slow 1st week but has been killing it since. Actually TB has some good prospects coming up in the minors. Thats if they keep them. ButJake should make the opening day roster at least as a utility player.

I really want to see Jake make it in the majors. But he just turned 29 years old. I think that hurts him because many times teams prefer a younger developing player. Maybe he can stick as a 4th outfielder.

The other outfielders are 27-28 so might not be too much of an issue.

If there's any organization that isn't stupid, it's the rays. They're constantly on the cutting edge, and they have to be to compete with their financial restrictions.

The Cardinals should trade for him. Jake is better than Siani. So is Victor Scott but that is besides the point.

One game gets you lifetime health insurance for him and his family. 43 days to get $34,000 pension. 10 years is $230,000 pension.

I think 1 day also gives a permanent large bump to salary earned in the Minors.

Jake needs 250-300 ABs at this level to see what he can be. That means he needs a team to give him that amount of ABs. Teams will now have tape on him and so he's going to have to figure out how to adjust at this level. He's going to need a team that says, "I don't care if you go for 20-20 in the next 5 games or 0-20 you are going to be in the outfield for us." Look at Rooker, he couldn't catch on with anyone until the A's got him and basically said exactly that. Now he's reaping the rewards of that. That's what Jake needs. A team that doesn't care if they win, they are rebuilding and developing.

I agree with this. What his torrid stretch has done is it will give a team enough to dream on him even if it's not TB.

He's a winning player. What I mean is he is willing to be the fourth OF, can play any of those three positions, can hit, he can bunt if a team needs it, he can pinch hit and pinch run and he can be a great team leader. He's unselfish. Heck he could probably pitch an inning in a blowout situation too.

Oh no, there's little chance he continues at this level of performance. But think he's been very close to .300 in his minor league career? Or do I remember that wrong?

I think that's right. There's usually a pretty big dip when going from AAA to MLB.

Yeah that makes sense. In this early stretch though he is handling the bat amazingly well. And what he's doing is very repeatable unless teams find 'a hole' in his swing so to speak.

He's doing great. Todd's idea of his future is the best case for him long term though imo. Being a roster holder in mlb isn't a knock... it's insanely impressive. Hopefully he can still play cf some bc that will make him much more valuable.
