Interesting game for pitching
(1) Simmons quality start
(2) McPherson a Freshman
(3) Dane Burns a big Lefty freshman
(4) Nate Williams a power arm guy
Nate Williams, first action after two years. Was he injured? Struck Out the side.

These young arms we are bringing in are impressive. Makhai Grant looks filthy.

(5) Grant
8 innings with 4 walks, 3 hits, and 13 Ks
The run being a HR that a dude mashed versus the wind

(6) Luke Dotson closes the game on 10 pitches, clean inning.
For pitching today, as impressive as an offense scoring 9 runs. 6 different dudes with nobody but the HR advancing past 2nd base for the final 7 innings.

Was nice seeing some 2 out hitting this weekend. Sight for sore eyes after past couple of years.

All pitchers that threw today were injured last year except for Dotson.

We were good in all facets I thought. Good defense, baserunning, situational hitting, pitching. Hard to be displeased about anything that happened this weekend.

I think we won?t know what we really have for a minute. See good and a lot to fix. Manhattan is not good. We may have a chance to be very solid, like the young pitchers, they need innings. 2 worries me, Reese had the potential to be a star, Sullivans bat stays in the zone a long time and we have options elsewhere down the lineup. If the mental side meets the potential this club could make some noise.

Encouraged by the bullpen arms.
All of them came in and threw heat for strikes.

You mean that the PC wasn't trying them to hit the corner no matter the umps strike zone. Refreshing.

My favorite JP quote- "if you don't throw strikes, you won't play"
He doesn't coach the "nibbles" but these dudes are throwing hard as ever. I almost felt sorry for the Manhattan kids. They were seeing some very deep in the pen arms, but they were shoving.

I know it's Manhattan, but our pitching looks really good. And we attack the zone, too. No nibbling.

No nibbling.
That used to be so exasperating.

We dont lack arm talent that's for sure. Need the freshmen to grow up asap.

Reeves better step it up. He was 1 for 12 on a weekend that saw us collect 33 hits.

Yeah, you can be 1-for-12 and mashed but I saw nothing mashed.
Reeves does have competition however. Sanders, Pullman, and Frei. He must have showed something in practice to be a leadoff guy that gets 5 at-bats per game.

Yea, I'm not sold at all on Reeves being our leadoff hitter long term.

Reeves is a plus defender but him leading off was a surprise. I think we need to move Highfill to leadoff and bat Trout 2nd.

Tuesday will be a good test for this team. Hattiesburg will not be an easy place to play. This team will evolve as all teams do and if I had a concern it would be the starting rotation. Ligon seems to take a minute to loosen up and get a groove and that's a little scary for our Saturday guy in SEC play. I would like to see one of the younger pitchers like Grant or Foster or maybe even Nolan Stevens step up and take a starting spot and essentially replace Loo and and then move Ligon to Sunday where there is more margin for error and move Stone to the bullpen where he can play a role similar to Houston Harding.
But even if things stay as they are there is no doubt that we have a ton of guys with talent who pound the strike zone.

Reeves was the leadoff hitter at The Citadel and had the most experience in that spot of anyone on the team currently. It seemed to me like he was hitting a lot of fly balls and if that's the case it may be as simple as just getting him to hit line drives and him figuring out if he is being pitched a certain way. He may be a transfer guy that struggles some at first like Scotty Dubrule did. And if he does continue to struggle we have some other options we can try as well. We know what Pulliam can do and he should be better than he was last year. That's probably our worst case scenario.

I would try Dylan Cupp. He has an OBP of .727 and has 5 walks to 1 K and 1 HBP. He is also hitting .400 with a double and he can run. It's also something he will probably have to learn how to do eventually anyway. I think he and Highfill would compliment each other pretty well at the top of the order. Then we could move Pulliam, Frei, or Sanders to the 9 spot pretty easily although with Frei's power we may be able to hit him higher in the order.
