I wonder if they're not worried they'll lose Warren Ruggiero and they're preemptively making the move. Ruggerio has been with him for all 11 seasons at Wake and was with him at BGSU before that.

Another mullen imo. Development guy that gets his projects stolen nowadays. I'm very curious if Dan can succeed in this environment

Ridiculous. Finding a guy that has gotten results with a talent deficit is a great indicator of possible success here. He had a good run at WF until the NIL destroyed him; programs just took who they wanted from him bc WF didn't support the program. He's won at 3 stops in his career.
I would have hated to have seen that slow mesh scheme here.

So NIL destroyed him yet we needed to get him??? Not exactly the greatest strategy there. If there's one thing you can say about this staff it's that they at least embrace NIL. If Clawson wants to keep coaching he may need to go back to FCS level. G5 will be even worse because if he happens to get a good player they'll just leave.

I first wanted him when we got leach, so there was no NIL. I wanted him again when we got arnett. Yeah, arnett was much better, no argument

It was not a comparison. One could not coach his way out of a wet paper bag and the other would have gotten no players with an offense that would not work in this league. DLs would have had field days on that slow mesh. Hell we ran it a little this year and they did.

Yep. NIL and the portal are ending some careers of some football coaches. You have to have a coach that is going to embrace it and bring in players from year to year.

As much as I really wanted Mullen back or Clawson when we hired Arnett, guys like Clawson and Mullen are more developmental coaches and I’m not sure they would have success in this modern era. It is more about being able to stock pile talent now and run a system that fits the portal guys you go after. By the time most of the guys are ready to be developed to their full potential they leave.

And they never fully develop. In a few years you are going to start to notice the level of play start to suck not only here but also at the pro level. Every freshman is going to want to play now and if they don't then they will leave. They will never grow into their position nor reach their potential/ No more Jerry Rices nor Joe Montanas nor Emmit Smiths. It's gonna look like a starting NFL QB who plays at the level of a college sophomore.

You're not going to win anywhere without development. He also is the best at seeing diamonds that are overlooked. This would also translate with the portal. He'd find the diamonds and win.

It's funnn you say that but I just heard Tom Brady talk about this exact thing. There's no development of players anymore, it's you gotta be ready to play now and it's causing the level of play to drop and will continue to drop. It's not just in football it's in every sport. Baseball has become how hard you can throw and how far can you hit, the fundamentals of the game are being lost. Basketball moved this way long ago. Instant gratification society. People don't have the patience to build something solid anymore.

Not hardly, and you still don't understand the Air Raid if you actually believe the system is just a dink and dunk system. That system changed the way offense was played in college football and had more effect on football at every level than any other system.

I wonder how bad it's going to hurt offenses going forward when you basically never get to have guys develop together for more than a year. You always have newcomers, but mostly in the past it was people that had been in the system for at least a year, with a very small percentage of your 1st string being true freshmen or recent transfers. Now 1/3 of the offense even at big time programs is going to consiste of new combers each year? NFL does it I guess, but that's with pros and there are people taht seem to flame out because they can't pick up more complicated schemes.

I think you could definitely see more simplified offenses and defenses because of transfers. I think Leach's plan of running 15-20 pass plays and 5-6 run plays including screens was really helpful to our players as far as mastering it.
Now I don't think the offense and defenses have to be that paired down necessarily but something like 20-25 pass plays, 5-6 RPO's and 5-6 run concepts and 3-4 screens seems doable.
I heard that when Clawson handed in his resignation, he held onto it for 5 minutes to honor the slow mesh.

I would argue that zone bocking in the run game- which led to the zone read game- which led to the RPO game evolvement had a bigger impact than a series of pass routes

Making what was a running play into a passing play is pretty smart.

That really started with the 49ers and Montana and Young. Now I'm not saying that they were Mahomes by any stretch of the imagination but for their time they were way more mobile than anyone else in the league until Randall Cunningham came along. I can tell you that they weren't running RPO's back then though.

I think baseball is starting to shift back. After awhile guys are realizing that hitting .220 with 25 bombs and 200 strike outs isn't going to keep you in MLB for long.
Pitching is way ahead of that though. I see a lot of guys that throw hard and have high spin but a lot of them still have good command. Of course pitching to hitters who have upper cut swings and swing at anything in the zip code aren't that hard to pitch to IMO.
You are right about people not having the patience to build something solid anymore. And the coaches can't build because all of their young players leave and they don't have a choice.

Every team in the NFL except for five passes the ball at least 50% or more. Three of the teams that don't pass it more than 50% of the time pass it 48-49% and then the Eagles pass it 43% of the time. There are six teams that pass the ball 60% of the time or more.
NFL teams as of 2021-2022 run RPO's 9-11% of the time.

Yes. The difference is what the 49ers did was build a legit dynasty with mobile QB's. And yes, I know the Cowboys were great in the 70's too but they weren't as big of a dynasty as the 49ers were.

I honestly didn’t scour too much b/c it was really just a joke. I just typed in Tom Herman‘s name in the search bar and hit the page button a bunch of times till about 2018.
This is a thread you started:
Teams I like heading into 2018
Texas... they lose only 4 players on their offensive depth chart and only 4 players on their defensive depth chart. They are adding an outstanding recruiting class. I really believe in Herman. I look for them to make a Georgia type jump next season.
And later you said… They have the right coach. Herman is gonna win big there.
ETA: Funny thing about looking back is the posters that no longer post (much anyways):
Cadaver, Shotgun, ifyouonlyknew, Thick, Jack Lambert, yjnkdawg, Spiderman, Dawg-gone-dawgs, Liverpooldawg, I seen it dawg, lamont, dawgtini, gravedigger, Ari Gold and many more.

Yeah, I did think he would be good there, but I'm pretty sure I think every Texas and aTm coach will be great at those schools bc... well, bc honestly they should be. They always make me look dumb too except sark
