From the sound of that article, if we get him, I think his family wants him to settle in. Doesn't sound like he wants to be portal hopping. I sure hope we settle on our Logos so his Dad can buy the right game day gear! And I know someone who can help him with the game day lodging. 😎

If you had told me two weeks ago that we would lose MVB, not get Jackson Arnold and we would be settling on Luke Kromenhoek, a guy that I actually did watch a few times and my first thought was "Norvell better get a guy in the portal".
Now here we are and people are trying to sell me on this kid.
Does he have some potential? Sure. Can he help us win games next year? Absolutely not. That is why I don't understand going after him. JA made sense, I thought he could help us next year. Re-signing MVB made sense, he could help us next year. This kid is not ready.
At best, he is KT's backup in 2026. Most likely he will be the backup this year and hopefully, he won't play. If he is forced to play because of injury, I would expect similar results that FSU received this year when he played P4 programs.

Shapen needs a backup. KT needs a redshirt year.

Apparently no other team thought he could help them either. He went to LSU to be backup. He has the same potential as Kromenhoek, except Luke is taller. Van Buren would not have played next year unless Shapen got hurt and he wasn't staying unless he was guaranteed to be the starter. He obviously found out no one else would guarantee him that either and he'd burned a bridge with us. LSU took him hoping they could get Craver out of the deal. I would not be the least bit surprised to see Van Buren transfer out of LSU after spring practice and end up at somewhere like Maryland.

I think if you look at what MVB did against SEC teams and what Kromenhoek did against ACC teams, its hard to say its the same.
I didn't think MVB was going to find a big time starting gig, and he didn't. That doesn't mean he couldn't have helped us next year.
Overall I think this was terribly mismanaged. We all agreed that when we went after JA that we couldn't lose MVB and also not land JA. Well that is what happened.
Maybe it all works out and Luke K is a great QB that is ready to take the reigns next year if Shapen gets hurt. My guess is that KT is better than him.
I guess a lot of this is that I don't undesrtand going after a potential 2026 starter when we have a great young guy lined up. I wanted someone in the portal that could beat out Shapen and help next year. So far, that doesn't appear to be the plan anymore. It was certainly the plan with JA, no matter what some people are saying now that he is going to AU.

We're not going after a potential 2026 starter. We're going after a 2025 backup.
If for some reason KT is not ready for 2026 (doubtful), we will hit the portal unless LK (or whomever we sign this cycle as a backup to Shapen) has a big glow up.
There is nobody available in the portal that can beat out Shapen as lebby sees it. He's big on Shapen, for better or worse. Can hate on that all we want, but JA was in same boat. He was going to have to take the job from Shapen.

Oh it was 1000% the plan. But again, Van Buren was not open to staying if he wasn't guaranteed to be the starter. He wanted no competition. We were never going to agree to that for a guy that won 1 game and completed 54% of his passes. If he would've agreed to stay without the guaranteed thing, I think he is still here.

I understand recruiting rank misses but are there ever typically any that are rated 5 stars that end up having no potential to be really good? There's busts but most of the busts I hear about is due to the work not being put in or involving themselves in things that shouldn't have been in. If the kid was a 5 star he obviously has some tools.

Let us be real though. Van Buren, and most other college QBs in his position, would rather be a backup in Baton Rouge for a year to then compete to start there for maybe a year or 2 than be the guaranteed starter here the next 3. I do not blame him and that is why he was wanting to leave by having outrageous demands. He probably took way less money and did not care.
I am telling you guys, everyone in the CFB world realizes we are now one of the main schools that, caused by coach dying and NIL timing, is in the process of being the gimme win in SEC every year. We are now about to be the new 1990-2020 Vandy.
Lebby job should not be judged on W/L the next 2-3 years. His main objective should be to get continuity and every aspect of program and administration on plan and pulling in same direction. Get maximum player buy-in and get the program respect back from 10 years ago. His relationship and reputation among up and coming prospects is so important. He also needs to find 4 or 5 young core leaders who we can retain all 4 years to bear the flag of MState and show that this program is not, and WILL NOT be the joke it is becoming. Wins will come but it is 100% going to take 3 or 4 years because of how bad the situation is.

That's just not a thing that can happen anymore. It's reload every offseason with portal roulette or bust until they change the rules, and if Lebby can't turn around the roster to get us to respectability in 2025, we can look for someone else who can.

Purdue can have as much money as Ohio state, but players are still going to pick Ohio state.
(We are Purdue right now)
This isn't a quick fix. We will be better in 2025. But we have the toughest projected schedule again. 2026 is the year to get back to 7 wins.

If we win 6 next year which I think is doable I'll be very happy.
Our defense absolutely killed us. And maybe to a degree Shapen going down too.
If our defense improves from outlier bad to below average and our improves marginally we should win at least all of our OOC games and we probably can steal a couple of SEC games against teams that are down.

I agree. It's funny we have in Shapen a very good qb who just needs to stay healthy, The Krow(easier for me to spell and say) and Kamario Taylor who may wind up being the best in the bucnch and people aren't happy. Just a few years ago Michael Henig was our starter and heck I don't even recall who his backup was. We've come a long way in the qb game. Lebby has work to do to get us back to respectability but I believe he'll get us there given the time and support.

I agree with that, I just didn't think the plan was to target a backup QB in the portal. I've been told he has a sizeable number. Maybe that is wrong, but it wouldnt surprise me with his pedigree and status.
I was told by multiple people that we were going after JA to be the starter with Shapen as the backup. Sure, there would have been a QB competition, but no one expected JA to lose it. I was fine with that, but it seems we are just going to run it back with Shapen.
I mean, he did lose to Toledo at home. We scored 17 points against Toledo. He is not a runner at all. Lebby's system is at its best when the QB can run. Shapen is not a runner, and honestly neither is LK.

Maybe so but it's AU and they have little brother syndrome and aren't averse to spending. It's a message board after all like ours so it's not the Word of God but I seem to recall reading the one they want is in the playoffs so if anything happens it won't happen until his team is done.

He has multiple offers for upwards of 3 million to stay in school. Rumor is that it is a Big 10 school offering it.
That's the rumors and probably true. His agent stated he will not transfer again and Ewers said he is going pro this week. We will see but I don't think he transfers.

Huh?
