I had absolutely no hope going into yesterday?s game so of course we keep it close and get me all the way invested before screwing the pooch yesterday. Still felt good to be in the game, especially since I predicted a 56-21 beat down.
1. Defensively we played out of our minds yesterday. We get 2 sacks and 8 TFLs. We had one breakdown the entire day and Isaac Smith just took a bad angle. I do not really consider the Prieskorn TD a breakdown since we zero blitzed and it still took a good catch for them to convert that. Our D kept us in the game yesterday. No doubt about that.
2. Yesterday should not be the deciding factor in keeping/firing Hutzler. You should not let one game be what makes the decision. I still hold to that if you can get a deal with a bona fide DC, I mean sitting P5, you make the move.
3. As much as people want to make yesterday on Lebby, it is not. It is on Van Buren. He kept us in the game with a few throws, but lost the game with a few more. Lebby schemed up a really good game. Obviously would have liked to get the run game going more, but I thought he got the ball out of Van Buren?s hand quick and did not give him many reads to make. That is going to be the next step in his maturation. He cannot solely be a one read or deep ball QB.
4. The goal line play calls were not bad, outside of second down. We got no push on first down, we get a false start, and then Van Buren dirts one to Coleman on 4th down. The second down was stupid if you are truly going QB power there. Van Buren is not Tebow.
5. Coleman is a player. Keep him at all costs. I know he makes the mistake on the punt return but he was the only offensive reason we were in that game. If Van Buren leads him on hashes 3 plays earlier, we score a TD instead of getting tripped at the one. He had the CB beat by 3 steps and Van Buren led him into the CB instead of down the hashes.
6. Bring in a transfer QB. I have said it for 6 weeks and have gotten pushback every week. Van Buren is just not ready. He MAY be ready next year but we cannot go into next season hoping at the most important position on the field. Shapen wins that game today.
7. Just like with Hutzler, do not let one game convince you that the D is good. We still need 5-8 IMPACT transfers on that side of the ball as well as 5-10 depth pieces. I really like Smith, Tillman, Jones, and Pollock. And I think Stone can still be a nice piece for you along with Jennings. However, we need to spare no expense on that side of the ball to get better.
8. On offense, we need at least 3 OL, a couple of WRs, a QB, and a RB if one presents itself.
9. You are about to see A LOT of guys get into the portal. Do not overreact and think the sky is falling. A lot of them NEED to get in the portal and are being told to get in.
10. The next 40-60 days will be the most consequential days in the history of our football program.
11. Have faith in Lebby. The players sure as hell do. A less bought in team would have rolled over and quit after Toledo, see Florida St. He will get this thing turned around. He now has a foundation to build from. He has a vision and tangible stats to sell instead of just a lot and a lot of promises
