View Full Version : Jans is doing a great job

He has a good team on the court that has a good shot at making the tourney for 3 straight seasons. And he signed a good HS class today... king grace, janerion Davis-Fleming, and Cameren Paul all 4-stars and all in the boat. I really hope we can keep Jans here for years to come.

So far there have been some head scratching low scoring games by SEC teams against less than stellar competition. This could be an interesting year.
Meanwhile, we really need that win against Utah. Their OOC schedule is SWACtastic and could cause an RPI hit down the road

Probably. But their 3 wins so far are against way way early KenPom sub 300 teams with Valley and Florida A&M still to go. We just really need to not drop this game.

That's because he told the boosters to shut the hell up, give him the money, and let him work. He told them if they didn't stop with all the meddling and trying to give him their thoughts, he was gone. He doesn't like to be bothered and he really doesn't give one iota of a shit about some of these people's thoughts. And he most certainly doesn't want to hang out with any of them or have dinner. Howland was a diplomat. So was Stans. Jans hates 95% of people.

I haven't heard that, but I'm good with it if it's true. Jans is good enough for State that he shouldn't have to deal with meddling. Not saying he's Saban, but Saban was able to semi-tell boosters to 17 off because he was Saban, and even at Alabama, they needed him badly enough to accept that. Jans should have the same benefits here. If we want to keep him, him not having to deal with boosters and other high profile schools knowing he won't cater to boosters, may keep him happy here longer and may make other schools more hesitant to hire him.

Oh he's still only here 2 more years MAX out of all likelihood. And meddling was probably a bad word to use, or not the right word. It's more that they want access like they had under previous staffs and Jans has told them all to kick rocks. That's not how he works. I have pretty good insight into how he operates and he doesn't operate like a lot of college basketball coaches. He's like Kiffin without the social media antics. He really doesn't like people around the program and keeps them at arm's length. He especially doesn't like them trying to get involved in recruiting. He wants the money to do what he wants to do and wants everyone to get the hell out of the way.

Is his goal to keep building around Hubb and see if we can make a run and then bolt? I think most would accept that IF he can get us over the hump and get a couple of wins in the tourney. If he doesn’t like us for whatever reason then there’s not a point in trying to appease him in the long term. But he certainly needs to be given whatever the hell he wants so he doesn’t leave us empty handed when he does decide to move on.

State is not a destination job. He has been rehabbing his image- letting old stuff time away. He keeps putting a NCAAT team on the floor every year a blue blood will come calling. That's what he is wanting

That is EXACTLY the plan. That is why it was so big to get a two year commitment from Hubbard when we renegotiated his NIL deal. It keeps Jans for two more years. And hell, maybe he ends up like Pearl and decides we can give him enough to compete on a national level. Hell NO ONE looked at Auburn as a destination job 11 years ago when Bruce took that job. Hell they looked at it as a coaching graveyard. Jans is building a monster. And he is probably 4 years ahead of the Pearl rebuild timeline because of what Howland left him.

Yea. There aren’t exactly a lot of blue blood opportunities out there. Duke, NC, UConn, Kentucky have all gone young. I could see Self possibly hanging it up at some point. But other than that who knows.

Agreed, State isn't a destination job. But we aren't a bottom feeder and play in arguably the best conference in the country so I'd like to see a coach take a little pride in what they build and stick around to build a blue blood tradition. The current blue blood programs didn't start out that way, they had to constantly win to earn that reputation. Unfortunately for us, once we get a Coach with promise who gets us going and makes us a National brand, they leave (Vic Shaeffer, Dan Mullen).

For starters, I hope Jans stays for the forseeable future because I can see him turning our program into something special. But for conversation sake, yes I do think a guy like Andy Kennedy would stay for a long term, he Coached Ole Miss from 2006-2018 so he has shown dedication. But from a personal standpoint I've never been a huge fan of his, and I will always see him as an Ole Miss guy.
Jans is recruiting very well, is coaching well and can turn us into something special. Mark Few built Gonzaga into what it is, Dabo Swinney did the same for Clemson (even though they have declined), Kelvin Sampson has Houston in the top 10 annually now. I said all that to say that it can happen at State.

He did and there is another job that he courted but I cannot remember who that was. I wish we can keep him at least 2 more years. He is still building and gaining momentum recruiting. I will like to see a final product from Jans before he goes.

So I have the whole story on that, know a very high up Arkansas booster who lives out here in DFW. I also was in Phoenix for the whole thing and know some people very close to Chris. Here's what happened:
They were spinning a bit on who they wanted to hire, some wanted Brad Underwood, some wanted Will Wade, and others wanted Jerome Tang. A couple of those guys turned them down and so they started guaging interest through agents down the list. This is where Jans came into play. There were a few that wanted him from the beginning. That started on either Tuesday or Wednesday. Wednesday evening, John Tyson got involved. That's when everything changed. He called Yurachek and basically said if you'll call everyone off and keep it silent I'll get you to the table with Cal. And folks need to remember that at that time, John Tyson and Hunter Yurachek were not on each other's Christmas card list because of the previous season and Tyson wanting Pittman canned and for them to go get Gus. Well Thursday in Phoenix, Cal was there early to watch some of his NBA guys and got a call from John Tyson that he and Yurachek were in town and wanted to meet with him, funny enough I saw Yurachek and Tyson separately earlier in the day but never put two and two together. I also saw Cal walking into the Footprint Center for the game that night. So Cal took the meeting and during it, Tyson handed Cal his checkbook and told him you tell me what you need every year for a Final 4 team and I'll write the check. That sold Cal.
So long story short on Jans, there were some that wanted him and he had some interest in the job, but there was never an interview. That was posturing by agents.

No doubt. The longer we keep him the better it is for us. I think the Mullen comparison is perfect. Jan knows he has a pretty good job here that pays well- but he wants the Big Sexy job. It's hard to stay with Jennifer Connelly when Kate Upton has invited you over to stay the summer.

All of that is true. He's a bit like Bruce Pearl when Pearl went to Auburn. Most thought he would rehab his image there and then take the blue blood job he was on track for when he was at Tennessee. However, he built Auburn into something incredible. That new arena they built also helped. It's why Cohen 17'd up so much by "renovating" The Hump and not just building a new damn arena. Pearl got to build a culture and a home court advantage in that building from Day 1. Jans could've had the same thing, but shit for brains was trying to make sure money went to non revenue sports instead of the two that actually turn a profit.

Different sport but Lane Kiffin has turned Ole Miss into a National Brand. I'm not saying they are blue blood but they are definitely a known National brand. I live in North Carolina so I'm all around Duke, UNC , NC State fans.... This summer I took my son to the barber shop and there were some kids playing the new NCAA football game at the shop. Those kids argued for about 10 minutes on who was going to choose Ole Miss as there team... it shocked me because again, I live in the Carolinas so I don't hear alot of talk about any Mississippi teams other than seeing an occasional MSU or Ole Miss tag on someone's vehicle since this is a military town.
I'd love to see that for us, and I truly believe Jans can get us there in basketball

We have got to do our part as fans and start packing the hump. Crowds have been a little better to start the season against the lower competition than it has been but that place better be packed once SEC play starts.

I've told the story on here before, but in 2014, before the collapse at the end, I was in a grocery store in Georgia. I had on a MSU sweatshirt and as I passed two young boys, I heard one of them say to the other one,"Mississippi State, that's my favorite team." You can become a national brand, and just as quickly as it came... it can go away.
