Distinguish between branding and a helmet logo?
Football uniforms are incredibly important to recruits. Ours are horrible.

That may be true, but according to Faulk, it's Selmon that is blocking the interlocking MSU on the helmet. Selmon only views it as a throwback.

Keenum gets what Keenum wants....just think about that. The fans want it and so buck stops with keenum not Selmon. I have never seen a university president insert himself into so much of the sports PR as keenum does.

The fact that we have our best looking and most recognizable logo ready and waiting to be used but we refuse to use it is why we are where we are. Keenum has went from id say one of our better presidents, to bottom 3 ever since we hired Leach.
Damn! We are in bitching mode for sure.
They will get in a new f op of players, probably a new DC. We will get close to 6-6.
Let?s go win some basketball and baseball.

Well when you are MSU and you spend a lot of money to rebrand to something like script State in part because of a push from Faulk then you're not going to rebrand completely one year later.
I think the interlocking MSU will come back but it's going to be gradual.

I don't recall which account but there was a college football twitter account that had a poll asking fans this fall which school they associate MSU with. It was overwhelmingly Michigan State. I think our staff knows branding us as "State" - something we all grew up saying anyway, is the smart marketing move long term. The interlocking MSU produces some great memories, but they are all in the past. I think the school is looking at the next 25 years of branding.

It will come back but it will be a throwback logo. I seriously doubt it will ever be a primary logo ever again. AND THAT IS OK. We knew in mid 2021, and Rosebowl made it well known, that Nike did not own the interlocking. Pizza Boy and the high school sports reporter did not start their crusade with the script until 2022. They finally got their wish with the script and as soon as they did they started wanting the interlocking. They knew we had the damn interlocking. Also, it really does not matter. It is a damn logo. And it is a great logo, but we spent a ton of money rebranding strictly because they caused a campaign that we JUST HAD TO HAVE the script. We are not going to then dump the script just because something better came along, that was readily available before they started their campaign against the banner.

Which is exactly what Selmon was explaining but we have so many thick headed fans that want to blame him and Keenum for everything they don’t listen.
I thought Steve’s interview was incomplete though because Selmon didn’t go into any detail or gush about his playdates with his bestie Lebbro

The main question that we at MSU should ask is what is our best looking helmet. Period end of discussion. Start there. I think the majority would say the interlocking MSU. So make that the helmet. The uniform doesn't have to look like the JWS uniforms with the miss state. We could modernize the unis. But let's get the helmet right first. For most programs it's the most recognizable thing.
And always wear the maroon helmet. Talk about branding. We aren't Oregon so quit with the different helmet colors and uni combos every week. Get a sleek home look and a great away look and that's it. Be more like LSU, Bama, and UGA. That way when viewers turn on the game, they know who's playing.

That would be like Alabama and LSU wearing their iconic uniforms for just their big rivalry games and a SEC game.

Yes. This isn't complicated. Design and wear your best helmet-always. See LSU.
Stop using the helmet to promote a "brand" or the whim of a school president, a passing thru AD, or a shit-brained consulting firm.

Ya'll arent wrong. Having the helmet as your brand is absolutely the way. The interlocking logo is without a doubt how we were viewed for decades. It was our identity. BUT:
If we are going with the script- that needs to be our brand for the next 25 years. There has to be commitment.

It wasn't available in 2021 officially. Work had to be done to make it available, and everyone was told it had no chance to actually come back in a full time capacity. I know the attorney personally that worked with the school to make it available. Steve also told everyone he was going to do a big story on it and then he decided not to.....wonder why that is?

Bc somebody decided to wear maroon pants, maroon jerseys, and a white helmet with script state on it. Possibly the ugliest look in FBS.
I don't believe we should be using multiple combos bc our options are so crappy. Like I said earlier, we aren't Oregon so don't try and be Oregon. 1 helmet, 2 or 3 combos. That's it.
We have Maroon, White and Gray/Silver. Pick out a great template and use those 3 colors with the MSU interlocking logo on a maroon helmet and don't change for the next 25 years. That's building a brand.

I actually prefer some of the alternates we have worn. I thought our black uniforms under Leach were the best alternates we ever broke out. Been waiting for those again. The Sonny Montgomery alternates were nice. The military appreciations vs A&M in 16 were awesome. And our all whites might be our best combo.

The helmets are fine. The State script logo is sharp. In 40 years kids today will be complaining about how it's our best logo and our president is ruining the university by not using it because that's what they grew up with.
This is a mountain out of a mole hill. No one is watching our sorry team anyways so the uniform is the least of our concerns.

Really bad take. Whether you agree or not, uniforms are incredibly important to recruits. It helps them form allegiances when they are young and can be a big deciding factor when they are older. Uniforms have been a big factor in Oregon's growth over the years.
And it's something that should be relatively easy to get right and simple to implement. Would build goodwill among the fan base and could aid in portal recruiting.

I agree uniforms are important. I disagree that our uniforms are a problem. Could they be better? Sure. But it?s not like they are repulsive. Besides we get whatever Adidas gives us. A&M literally wears the same thing we do. Kids grow up and want to play for teams that win, the jerseys are second to that. Old Dominion has some sweet powder blue jerseys but I don?t know anyone who grows up wanting to play for Old Dominion.
What Oregon has done with their uniforms is the complete opposite of what you?re proposing. Oregon wears a different uniform and combo every game. Their uniform brand is built on being ever changing. They have bright flashy colors in neon yellow and green. There?s only so much you can do to be flashy when your main color is maroon.
The problem with getting uniforms ?right? is it?s all relative. What I think looks great, you may hate.

Agree. Interlocking MSU is the best looking to me (to each his own). I think branding is about what do non-MSU fans ID MSU with? Part of that goes with winning. We did some winning with interlocking MSU. Maroon headgear with interlocking MSU should be it.
You can keep script State or Mstate and others for logos. Script State is dumb for a brand, because we are starting from scratch and we are losing. People everywhere will now link State logo to State sucking. Not good for a brand maker. Mstate has better street cred than State.
Some people hate MSU logo because it is old. Some people hate anything old - including people. It gets repeated on here all the time.
Bama, UGA, LSU, etc. they don't change their logos because they have a brand and they stay with it.

I would like to see the State script helmet with a double stripe down the middle, kinda like UGAs stripe. The State script looks too small to me. Maybe its just me... . I don't think we will ever get the interlocking back totally, even tho it is in my opinion the best logo we have for football.
