Since that seems to be the excuse right now for teams.
I think A&M made a big mistake not hiring Stoops, even though Elko will be good.

It's looking that way so far.

Kentucky has had stability and the same philosophy for a decade now. That matters. Plus we arent recruiting against them very often

Then throw in that some Sr HS recruits have their 3rd different position coach from State recruiting them

Several of their portal additions were SEC guys that the other school didn?t wanna lose. Meanwhile we took Blanton because he was from Madison and life long State fan whom SC didn?t even panic over when he entered portal.
So yeah some stability and NIL helps

They spend a ton on basketball so bet it skews but my guess is $7-8M. They spent a ton in the portal this offseason

Yep but we got lot of people that want you and everyone to mortgage their house so we can overpay a poorly coached team.

Nope that is the drama I hear from many all the time. Yes they don't say mortgage the house but saying if you don't pay millions to players you can't win is just as stupd.

I guess stupid is subjective then. Winning however, is quite objective.

Well, with people saying we don't pay as much as others so much, you're happy then?

Its a scam just like more taxes will fix everything. We just waste more money with more taxes and enable to losers of society. When give more NIL for Johnny if Bama or UGA wants him they just pay more. At end of day we pay more and get the same leftover players. We just up the payday of those that get paid.
I'm not saying that we don't need to pay certain players but thinking you are going to buy a team over others is a joke.

Back to the original post here. UK didn't drop the bank to get a good team - not playoff contender but a good team.
TAMU did break the bank and what did it get them.
Case and point.

Come on dude you know this logic makes no sense and you are cherry picking. First of all UK paid a ton in the portal this year so that is kind of a moot point, but you are trying to make the argument that teams who ?break the bank? don?t get any return on it. Guarantee at the end of the season it?ll be pretty clear that teams who spent the money are the ones playing meaningful bowl games and playoffs
Money on its own will never win you a championship or get you to a marquis bowl game, you need other things as well. But without the funding it?s a non starter. You simply won?t get there. Sucks but that?s the way it is, you can disagree all you want but its the truth and what we have to do if we want to stay relevant.

It's not but we've got a dumb bunch of fans that believe that. It's balance between developing players, keeping players, and bringing in necessary players in the portal to bump you up a notch. We just have no base from which to start because Leach and crew sucked at recruiting and Cohen killed the NIL process. Lebby has to build it back from the ground.

I'm with you. NIL should be as it was originally planned. Commercial/merchandise/advertisement agreements so that they get paid for their Name, Image and likeness. Instead why have turned it into a uncapped free agency where the player has no obligations to hold up their end of the deal. Primarilyl, so they can ride around campus in a lambo or something flashy.
If they want to do commercials and shit like that, yes they need to be paid. To come to your school? They shouldn't be handed millions of dollars for that. Some of these guys are getting 3-4x a rookie contract in NIL.

You know the lambo thing you're talking about is the most extreme case and would never happen here, right? 90% of these NIL deals are under 150k. The rookie NFL minimum is 800k, how many people do you honestly think are making 800k? Some of the biggest names, yes but that is such a minority. Say we have an 8M football team, you are probably paying a star QB 750k (yes that's a lot but it is what it is), a star WR 350k, then 5 other stars across defense lets say 1.5M. Everyone else is getting 75k or so

If the rumor I head is true we're paying Shapen about half of 750K. That was assuming he stayed healthy though so no idea how that is written but if we pay him the full NIL it was about 325k

Yep that's what I figured. 300k ish was my guess for him. He's a pretty good player who is not great and has trouble staying healthy. 750k is getting you those Cam Ward/Dillion Gabriel types in the portal.

I did say some of these guys are getting 3-4x a rookie contract... not ALL of these guys.... sheesh. You do know what some means.... right?
NIL is not supposed to be pay for play. Do you not agree? It was intended to pay players for their name, allow them freedom to sell their brand. Not so fans can collect a million bucks to persuade a transfer QB to come play his last year of eligibility for them. That is what is killing the sport.

Truth here, at least that is the athletic department marching orders.
Facts are:
1. Instabilty
2. Coaching
3. NIL

Man this is so far off base I can't even believe I'm responding. Talent wins over the course of time. Yes, coaching matter. But if you have nothing to work with it really doesn't.

It's both. And I think Ole Miss is going to be an interesting case study on this by the end of the year.
I have a feeling that going extremely portal heavy is going to work about as much as MSU going JUCO heavy. Sure it will work some of the time but it's not a magic bullet.
And really the piece we need to mention from coaching is the identification piece. The coaches have to identify the right players to pay. Or staff I should say.
