View Full Version : Monday Morning Thoughts-Buckle Up, It's Gonna Be A Bumpy Ride

Well I was travelling yesterday and wanted to give me a little more time to gather my thoughts from Saturday afternoon. Brutally hot and a struggling team did not make for a fun afternoon to say the least. On the positive, the beer was cold and my ice didn't melt so I could make vodka drinks after the game.

1. We are BAD. There is no way around it and there is no help coming. We are what we are at this point.

2. This will go down, in a landslide, as the worst defense Mississippi State has ever fielded. Bad recruiting, bad evals, and bad coaching have gotten us to this point. I think Hutzler could be a good DC down the road, hell look at Peter Sirmon, but his first job should've never been a P5 coordinator much less an SEC Coordinator. He will need to go after the season unless we do what we did with Chris Wilson in 2011 and bring in an actual DC and just let Hutzler keep the title of DC but strip play calling duties away from him. Turner also needs to go. It's time for him to retire. I actually don't have an issue with our corners or safeties I think they are actually ok.

3. Shapen going down sucks but it really doesn't change the outlook of the season. He might could've gotten us a win against MAYBE Arky or A&M but honestly he could only do so much. I really liked how we had added him to the run game a bit on Saturday.

4. Please get Creed on the field. I mean I'm starting to believe it's Bumphis that has something against the kid because this is two staffs in a row that criminally underplay the kid. On Saturday---1 target, 1 catch, 12 yds. Like get the kid the damn ball and he's going to get yardage.

5. MVB is about to have grow up and grow up FAST. No other way around that fact. And unfortunately he's about to be baptized by fire with playing number 1 and number 2 in the country. But in a way, I like it. This season is lost at this point, so let's see what we got. If we see flashes and something we can build around then you roll with him. And if he looks shellshocked then you either bring back Shapen or go get Jackson Arnold.

6. I think Lebby's newness as a HC cost us on Saturday. I thought he should've reviewed the possible INT down 28-21 and then just having a feel of where Shapen was from an injury standpoint going from the 3rd to the 4th quarter. Dan's newness cost us a couple of games in 09 so him adapting and learning on the job isn't a long term issue in my mind.

7. We need to commit to running the football more and commit to getting Daniels in the mix. With a new QB we are going to have to simplify and minimize his chances to make mistakes. I thought we did a good job at times running the ball on Saturday. I mean we ran for 240 so we obviously were doing something right. Also with how play action tends to set everything up in this offense we need to be able to effectively run to give the possibility we might on play action and RPO stuff.

8. The OL probably played their best game on Saturday. This kind of piggybacks off point 7 but I thought our line held up a lot better than it has in previous games. I also thought our QB was making decisions quicker and was not afraid to run it when his first or second read was not there.

9. WE HAVE TO START FASTER. We actually forced a 3 and out on their first possession and couldn't take advantage.

10. On the rare occasions our D actually gets a stop or, even rarer, forces a TO, we have to strike. We cannot let those moments pass by.

11. We need to make sure that we're getting better on both LOS in recruiting and portal this offseason. We are overmatched because of LOS right now. Our skill guys are SEC guys, at least on offense. But our O Line, although they improved this week, is probably going to get abused the next two games.

12. I'm still with Lebby. We have to have some stability at the HC positions. 3 HCs in the last 18 games and 3 different offensive schemes in the last 18 games is just not conducive to any type of success. This is going to be a rebuild in every sense of the word, but it can be done. We have the commitment from an NIL standpoint, we just have to get the players. We have to find players that 1. can help us and 2. fit what we are doing and building.

13. Fans cannot bail on this. Having pride in this is not easy in times like this. But we've done it before and we came out and achieved more success than we thought was possible. I caution everyone to not be too emotional over the results of the next two games. It's going to be two ass kickings. There's no way around what is coming.

Hail State!
